I voted and I'm in the process of making a profile.
But...I'm... not sure if this is a silly question or not, though. Do we have to have in-game copies of the Pokemon our character has or do we just pick a few Pokemon? (Would it have to form a decent team, also?)

Play-WithMy-Doh I think it should start in Kanto. 3nodding I voted for Johto, but only because it's directly connected to Kanto by land, unlike the 2 other Japan regions that you have to cross the sea to get to. I'm in full support of Kanto. Would allow me to play younger Medioc. XD
Unova was my vote, I believe, but I would completely support Kanto.

It's far away from the 4 japanese regions though, since it's actually Phoenix Arizona in real life, and when you trade out into the Gen 3 games, the pokemon page would say that the pokemon traded from Orre is "from a distant land". Does the time really matter?
Why can't it be just-all the trainers find their selves in Orre for different reasons >>? Because I mean. Gen really shouldn't matter because people have different gen's arcross the board.

My thoughts on time-
Pokedexes change, knowledge of the full lists of pokemon change, pokemon technology changes, and of course, story changes.
Even so, I'm totally cool using my character as is in the RP.

I took pokemon from my signature grass and dragon pokemon from every region. I never go to Sinnoh without my leafeon and Garchomp!
