The Sarnai Brothers

Mandrin watched her walk off before looking over at his brothers. He felt incredibly guilty, thinking he did that to her shoulder when he tackled her. The youngest brother sighed, walking over to Raban. Samual lifted the girl in his hand gingerly, careful not to make her put weight on her ankle. Despite her grumbling and fuming, he wrapped one arm around her shoulder so he could half carry her over. It was obvious by his lanky figure that he wasn't the strongest brother, he was the weakest. He could carry her, but he knew she was a but too proud to let him. They lurched over to Tenshi and the others.

Kaito sighed, muttering As you wish to Amaya before Tenshi came over. His eyes glazed over as they usually did when following an order. He didn't let any sign of pain show, though. To her question to if he was hurt or not, he only shrugged. Of course he was to high in himself to admit if his bone cracked. It was just part of his stubborn personality.

Raban stared at the sky, barely noticing when his arm was touched. After a few months of being poked and prodded, he got over the sensation of being physically contacted. He and Mandrid exchanged looks, the younger brother somewhat on edge. Raban shook his head. "Relax. It wasn't your fault." Mandrin sighed, visually relaxing.

Tenshi raised an eyebrow at Kaito's response and the glaze in his eyes. She suddenly pushed him to the ground, making him sit, and grabbed his injured foot. She carefully took of his shoe and sock and observed the nature of the injury. She then reached into her bag and started making a splint after aligning the foot correctly.

"Let me say one thing right now," Tenshi said loudly, making sure everyone heard her. "You may have came here as slaves but you are not now. You are simply yourself but you just have to watch over a girl. So please," she looked at Kaito, her eyes soft, "don't act like you have to listen to us, only do it if you want to. My sisters and I know the feeling all to well of having to follow orders and I don't want you guys to be like that."

Tenshi quickly wrapped Kaito's foot and gently placed it on the ground. She then summoned some water and placed it over his foot. Her hand glowed blue and the water seeped in, making his foot heal faster. "That should lessen the pain enough for you to make your way to the house. Also, thank you for saving Amaya." She then looked up at him worriedly. "Does it hurt? Do you have any other injuries?"

Tenshi then looked up as she saw Hoshi and Nariko neared. She grabbed a pillow that was in her bag and propped his foot on it. Nariko carefully hobbled over to Tenshi and sat down in front of her, sighing. Hoshi kneeled in front of Tenshi, turning so her back faced her. Tenshi made quick work with Nariko, despite Nariko's yelps of pain. "Why are you being so rough?!" "Because she knows we lied to Mandrin and Samual."

Tenshi simply nodded and focused her attention on Hoshi. She placed one of her hands on Hoshi's shoulder, the other on her back. "Oh no," Hoshi muttered, already knowing how this was going to end up. Tenshi pulled Hoshi's shoulder while pushing her back. This caused Hoshi to yell, trying to fight back the tears.

"Mandrin and Samual, it's not your fault the girls got hurt. A sprain ankle and shoulder is actually the most common injuries they get when they fight," Tenshi called out, making a sling and putting it on Hoshi.

"Nariko and Hoshi get into fights all the time but they always give a lame excuse to what it was they were fighting about. The truth is, they're fighting because they hate how much alike they are. Not that they don't like being twins or anything, but...in the village they grew up in, being a twin was a curse. They also hate how no one can tell them apart without having to try and look different or hide their eyes. They want people to see them not as one person, but two," Amaya said, biting her bottom lip after her words.

Nariko and Hoshi looked away from each other, embarrassed and ashamed of the truth Amaya spoke. They loved being twins, always able to trick people and get away with it. But it hurt when people just saw them as one person and didn't acknowledge how different they are, not just how much they have in common.

"Hey...it's not like..."
"...we hate being twins..."
"...we love it..."
"...but..."
"...we want others..."
"...to see Nariko and Hoshi..."
"...not the twins..."
"...we'd do anything for each other...
"...we love each other dearly..."
"...we've been through a lot and pulled through with each other..."
"...but not doubt..."
"...we get into fights like sisters would..."
The twins looked at each other and smiled, their smile looking the same. Nariko carefully wrapped her arm Hoshi and vice versa. "Sorry about the shoulder." "Sorry that you suck at walking for you to sprain your ankle." They both chuckled, amends already made.

Tenshi turned her attention to Kaito and smiled. She once more lifted his foot into her lap. "Not from what I saw, you were quite gentle with her and I appreciate that. But I do not appreciate the fact you lied to me," she said sternly. "I really don't like people lying to me, it makes me feel like the person can't trust and thinks I'm an idiot. So Raban, forgive me for what I'm about to do." She violently pulled on the splint, not doing any damaged to the foot but sending waves a pain through Kaito's system. But her soft hands once more calmed the pain by gently rubbing his foot, her eyes soft and focused like a mother. She gently pressed a part of Kaito's foot, causing a quick and sharp pain entering but left as soon as it arrived. Her hands once more glowed, completely healing his foot. "There, good as new."

"Mama? Do you want me to clean the garden?" Amaya asked innocently, her hand slightly raised as a few trees shook as if ready to move. Tenshi shook her head. "Not now sweet heart, you're still shaken up, right? Go inside and I'll make some lunch, kay?" she said softly, gently cupping her cheek. Amaya nodded happily but stood where she was. Amaya hated being alone, it was one of her fears besides heights.

"Hey, can one of you guys carry Nariko? Just ignore her pride and all that, she tends to make things worse if she tries to walk it off. Tenshi was just thinking of asking you guys that," Hoshi said. Nariko only blushed and glared at her twin, knowing better than to lie again or deny the truth since Tenshi was so close.

Tenshi nodded in agreement with Hoshi, standing up. She swayed on her feet, becoming lightheaded. "Mama? Did you sleep at all last night?" Amaya called out, looking worriedly at her. Tenshi smiled at her and opened her mouth to speak, but her eyes rolled to the back of her head as she fell. "Mama!" "Sis!" "Tenshi!" all three girls said at the same time.

The Sarnai Brothers

Kaito screeched curses in Russian, getting his foot away from her. He jumped back, over the seat and behind his bothers. His fridgid eyes stared at her, untrusting. That was a step back, in his mind. The twins' eyes widened in feear, their hot-headed older brother behind them. They visibly stiffened, waiting to hear the sickening sound of him pulling out a dagger. It never came. He just stood his ground withfists clenched.

Samual shuddered, stepping away from Kaito. He was smart enough to know it was not a good idea to stand near him when he was like this. He took the chance to get farther from Kaito, holding his hand out to Nariko. "We know what you mean, except anyone can tell us apart. I mean, there a few obvious things that make us different." Three top things people notice; their eyes, the melotic song behind Samual's voice, and the fact that Samual was submissive to his brother.

Raban didn't even flinch to think about his ction. His impulsive instinct lunged him forward, sturdy arms ready to catch Tenshi. In less then a moment, his swift movement caught her in a cradling embrase. He lifted her up, unure if she was consious or not. The twins looked over her with frightened expressions. 'We are not doing very good for our first day...' They thought together.

Nariko stood without assistance, only for her to yelp in pain and lift her injured ankle. She quickly leaned on Samual, clutching his shoulder as she panted.

Hoshi stood as well, rushing over so she was between Kaito and Tenshi. She looked over at Kaito, her eyes hard. "Why did you lie to her?! You saw what she did to us when we lied, what made you think she was going to be any different with you? She hates lies because of that blasted whorehouse and you're not helping her get over it!" She turned her attention away from Kaito to look at Raban. "Can you take her to the living room and set her down on the couch? Samual, carry Nariko please, she won't be able to walk if she keeps trying to move or give her to Kaito if you can't do it. Amaya, you and I are going to make Tenshi's tea," she ordered. Event though Hoshi was normally quiet, she took charge when she had to, especially if Tenshi was down.

Amaya's frightened eyes look at Hoshi's stern eyes and nodded, quickly rushing to the house. She made a quick stop by her garden to pull a few herbs before going inside.

"It's not your fault, it's ours. We should have noticed how exhausted Tenshi was but we still went and fought. We're useless to our own sister who did so much for us..." Nariko trailed off.

Hoshi bit her lip, turning her head away and making her way to the house. She couldn't argue with her twin because she felt the same way.

The Sarnai Brothers

Kaito practicly hissed out Russian again. Out of all the brothers, he was the worst with English. It didn't come as naturally as talking Russian. Raban glared at him, holding Tenshi a bit tighter. He grit his teeth together, then went inside, following closely behind Hoshi. He was increadably aware of Kaito's eyes on his back, but that was normal. Usually he just fumed for a while, then Raban would spar with him.
Samual wrapped a supportive arm around her waist to hold her up, not to be... Cheeky. He took away her weight to as much as he could as they pulled up behind the group going inside.

Kaito sighed, walking in last. He wasn't sure what he was to do now, so he stayed next to Raban, the only one who knew why he lied about if it hurt. He knew what thoughts filled Kaito's head. Raban knew Kaito lied because he didn't like attention like that, or showing weakness in that way. Raban looked over his shoulder at his violent brother, giving him a more sinsear look then earlier.

Mandrin had walked in with Samual, on the side not occupied by a broken ankled girl. They were silently murmering a conversation about if they were actually going to be allowed to stay in this home. Of course, they spoke Russian, as not to let anyone understand what they were saying.

"You know, it kinda sucks not being able to understand you guys. What language are you speaking?" Nariko asked, limping on only one leg.

Tenshi suddenly whimper and let out a small cry of pain. Hoshi tensed and look back at Tenshi. "Move your hand down from her shoulders to just below her shoulder blades. She's having a nightmare," Hoshi ordered, quickly clearing the sofa for Raban to lay Tenshi on. Amaya came in then, a cup of tea in one hand and the other hand Tenshi's medical bag.

"Oh no, is she having another nightmare? I thought she didn't have them anymore."

Hoshi kneeled by the couch, biting her bottom lip. "Okay, I know this is going to sound bad but I need you guys to hold her down. When she gets these nightmares, she thrashes around a lot despite her injuries. And I'm going to need one of you to rub the ointment on her back, none of us feel right about doing it since it causes her pain."

Nariko cursed under her breath, feeling useless. None of the girls could help Tenshi because they were either injured or didn't feel right about doing it.

Mandrin's eyes went wide as he heard of what was happening. Does she shift into things like us when this happens? He thought to himself, obviously worried. His caramel eyes swept around the group, metting Samual's. Something snapped between them and Mandrin stepped forward to help Tenshi.

Raban did as told and moved his hand. His eyes brimmed with worry for the woman whom he hadn't known for a full day. He gingerly set Tenshi on the couch, but something made him wonder how violently this flailing was. He left a stern hand on her arm ready to keep her down if needed. Then he noticed that Mandrin stood next to him. "I can hold her down... Put I can't hurt her...""I know you can't. I'll do it." They exchanged quietly in Russian. Of course they spoke freely like that in a language they hoped the sisters didn't know.

"Looks like I'll get the back... Kaito take her legs. Sam, you... Just hold Nariko." He spoke clearly, obvious control over the brothers as they did as they were asked. Kaito loomed over her legs, ready to hold them down if needed. Raban looked at Hoshi, waiting for whatever ointement it was.

Amaya quickly brought out the ointment that was going to be used and handed Hoshi a pair of scissors. "Sister forgive me. I know you hate showing your back but you'll be in more pain if we don't," Hoshi said softly in Japanese. Amaya had tears in her eyes, covering her mouth with her hands to quiet herself. Hoshi took a deep breath and started to cut the back of Tenshi's top.

Tenshi suddenly tensed and started thrashing around. "NO!" she screamed, moving to get up. "We made a deal you b*****d!" she screamed again, tears falling down her face. "Leave me and my sisters alone!"

"Hold her down!" Hoshi shouted, a few tears falling down her face. Amaya turned her head away, seeing her sister like this broke her heart. Nariko turned her head so it was against Samual's shoulder. Tears silently fell from her eyes, falling onto his shirt.

As Tenshi felt herself being restrained, she struggled even more. More tears fell from her face as she cried. Hoshi silently cut her top to reveal bandages that wrapped around almost her entire torso. As she cut the bandages, Tenshi once more struggled. "Please...not my wings...anything but my wings..." Tenshi begged, her body shaking with her cries.

"I'm sorry...I'm so sorry..." Hoshi repeated over and over again, handing Raban the ointment.

On Tenshi's back were two jagged scars on her back that were in between her shoulder blades. They had a film over them instead of gnarled skin. There were other minor scars that were the same type around the large scars, as if the person who gave them to her were digging out whatever was on Tenshi's back..

"Rub the ointment all over her scars. She'll start thrashing more and screaming more so get a good grip on her. The ointment won't heal the scars but it will soothe most of the pain she is remembering," Hoshi instructed, her voice cracking a few times.

Samual had to close his eyes, not able to stand watching somebody suffer like that. He just couldn't take it. He turned his head away nd cringed each time painful words were strained. Mandrin did the same, except he stuck it out and held the arms down. He flinched each time she spoke, but only held tighter.

Kaito certainly wasn't enjoying it, but he seemed unfazed when inhumain noices came from her. Sure, he knew it was probably painful, but... It blew right over his head. This was just one of thoe things he wasn't very sensitive with. Raban, on the other hand, was dearly bothered by his task. He thanked Amaya quietly as he built himself up for this.

With a sigh of exaspiration, he placed some of the ointment in his hand. He had averted his eyes from her back, but now it was time to hurt her. He pressed over the scars as lightly as he could, but was tried to get it done fast. The last thing he wanted was to make this last any longer then it had to.

As soon as Tenshi felt Raban touch her scars with the ointment, she released a heart-wrenching and terrified scream. Her hands gripped the couch tightly, her tears ever flowing.

"I'm sorry! It's my fault! I's all my fault..." Amaya shouted, curling up into a ball and crying.

Nariko's shoulders shook more as she buried her face more into Samual's shoulder. You can almost faintly hear her saying, I'm sorry...I've caused you so much pain...

Hoshi leaned forward and buried her face into the couch. Her shoulders shook as her hand gripped the couch. "It's going to be okay mother...they'll grow back, right?...we'll be far away and we'll be happy..."

Tenshi finally stopped thrashing, breathing heavily. Her body shook a few times as a few tears fell. "Are you girls...okay?" Tenshi asked softly, her voice hoarse from screaming and weak from thrashing so much. Hoshi brushed a few strands of Tenshi's hair out of her face.

"We're fine mama...just go to sleep..." Amaya whispered, crawling over to Tenshi to gently touch her hand. "You can let her go now," Nariko grumbled, trying to hide that she was crying. She still kept her face hidden.

Tenshi slowly opened her eyes, blinking her tears away. "Sorry..."

At the vibrations of her screaming, all of the brothers cringed. Except for Kaito. He had better control over his shifting then the rest of them, so when their sensitive ears picked up the sound of her sheer terror, waves of feathers grew from their skin. They were waves, nothing more. At least that was what they were suppost to be. Around Raban's wrist, his feathers remained. They were raven colored and glistened in the light as if wet. His teeth gritted together and he released her. He stood up andd stepped back a few steps, wishing his brothers would do the same. He looked down at his wrists, glad they were the only things to grow with feathers.

Kaito walked with Raban, noticing his wrists. He looked back at the sisters, feeling a tinge of sadness at how they swarmed to reassure her. He kept that from showing on his face as Mandrin stalked silently away from them, and to his own family. His auburn feathers didn't stay, but he saw how Raban's did. He nodded his head at his brother, a quiet sign of respect. He could see by that alone that the screaming bothered him more then anyone else. He knew it had because he was the one to put her in that pain.

Samual looked at the girl who was barrying her face in his shoulder. He wouldn't have known she as crying if it wasn't for hte fact his shirt was becoming wet. He sighed with releif that it was over, and Tenshi was awake. He was also releived that his dawn colored plumage didn't stick. His hand moved to Nariko's shoulder, still keeping her up. He patted her softly, and craned his head around so he could whisper in hir ear, silent that not even Raban could hear. Yet, close enough that she could. "Are you going to be okay?" His effortlessly innocent voice strummed with the twist of a siren.

Nariko let out a sigh and pulled her head up. She turned her head to the side so Samual couldn't see her face but her cheeks still glistened from when her tears fell. "Can you take me over to her?"

Tenshi slowly sat up, one of her hands grasping the front of her clothing so it wouldn't fall and keeping her decency. Her breathing was slightly labored but she seemed fine. Hoshi quickly placed a large bandage over her back, then let Amaya help Tenshi sit against the couch.

"Thank you...and I'm sorry you had to see that..." Tenshi said softly but loud enough for everyone to hear. She lightly flinched as she agitated her back. "It's not your fault Raban that I was in pain. It's just a bad memory that seems to never want to leave." She softly sighed as she closed her eyes.

"It's that b*stard who gave you those scars," Nariko growled.

Amaya nodded but suddenly looked at Tenshi worriedly. "Is that why you got the guys? Because you think he and his guards are nearby?" she asked, fear obvious in her voice.

"Or is it because of your nightmares? You haven't rested and you fear you won't be able to protect us?" Hoshi accused.

All we have left
Is each other
No material goods
No more pride
No freedom
No family....

Raban said nothing, though he wondered what those scars were there for, or how they got there. Something made him want to hurt who did them, whoever would take a young girl and her sister's peace. The sudden twisting of aggresion made the pitch black feathers on his wrists flare up to his elbows. One by one, they slowly dissapeared, as his anger faded away.
Samual nodded to her, then just picked her up instead of just struggling over. Her pride wasn't as big of a thing right now. He had seen the feathers crawls up his eldest brother's arms. He carefully set her down on the nearest open space of the couch, then backed off. He stood by his twin, his family facing their's. He wantedto say something reasuring to her, to them, but he didn't know what would be right.

Out of them all, it was Kaito to speak. The brothers snapped their heads to look at him, surprised that he was talking. "For either of those reasons, you can sleep well tonight. If anything, we can do our jobs." His voice was even, thick with a strong, hearty Russian accent. Which only made what he said next sound pitiful. "And... I'm sorry about lying to you earlier." Kaito looked directly at Tenshi now, really meaning it. Raban was pleasently surprised by his brother. It usually took a while of coaxing and guilting him to apologize for anything. And at those times, he was just saying it.

And not even you can take that away.
