Marina
Ship Doctor

Marina nodded when this mage made her affirmation, a ghost of a smile flicking across her face. She took one last glance towards the now closed door the two of them had moved away from, the most important person Marina knew resting behind the wooden frame. Even with the barrier between them, the pixie could still vaguely sense him through their shared bond. It was a strange thing, in all honesty. After all, it was another person holding a part of your being, a part of your soul and essence, and you held a part of theirs. The ancient did not regret the decision she had made, and compared to the decade or two before she had meet Calcifer, the fleeting passage of time they had been together for held easily some of the most memorable parts of her life. There was never a dull moment with him; life was carefree and jubilant.

Returning her attention back to the young woman in her company, Marina had no trouble at all to fall in step with her, having been not too far behind the other when she had momentarily paused for one last backwards glance. It was hard not to worry over the Captain, having been for more than half of the man’s life, before he earned that title or this ship. When he was young and vulnerable. It did not help the matters with how capricious and buoyant he would be.

Still, the pixie knew there was no point in continuing to let her thoughts dwell on the blue-eyed Captain. After all, she was in the company of another – one who was pleasant enough to spend considerable amount of time with. Pushing all thoughts away of her bonded, Marina concentrated on the woman in front of her. It would not be a coincidence that the ancient brought her full attention back to Charlotte at the perfect – mere seconds before the mage began to speak again. No matter how much is occupying her mind, this ship doctor was impeccably tuned to all around herself. She noticed far much more than most others – even with her mind miles away. It was a unique and understated talent that had come in handy countless times. Also, it allowed her to have some leeway when her thoughts strayed toward the man on the top of her list of things to be concerned about while still never ignoring those in front of her physical being.

Then again, Char’s question brought Marina’s mind back onto the Captain not long after she had forced him into the corners of her mind. It was slightly humorous, and the pixie could not stop the soft smile that began to grow onto her face – out of fondness and amusement. “No need to fret.” The ancient told her, an ironic suggestion given how long and how much Marina would do just that during each day, every day. “He has just been neglecting to conserve his strength. You know how he can be.” Her smile grew at the thought of his exuberance, making her eyes sparkled with mirth. He was such the rascal!

“I had him rest, he needed it.” Marina concluded as they stepped out from the hallways and into the fresh air, assuring the mage that all was well with the man. Nothing serious, nothing to worry about. Things were all good.

They actually really were, as the pixie directed her eyes to the sky. Like most water creatures, the bright sun was not always a pleasant welcome, but today Marina couldn’t deny that its rays left her feeling good and warm, the vast blue sky calming. Closing her eyes against too much of that glorious sight, this pixie breathed in deep, the gentle breeze flittering past her, causing her hair to float gently with it. Marina could taste water in the air, and that was comforting. Opening her eyes, her gaze returned to the woman she was conversing with. It was probably clear with the inclined of her head that Marina was letting Charlotte decide the direction they would continue on.

((Meh. It still worked out either way.))

Lucky Lucas

Luc looked over the edge of the ship, looking at the damage. Unlike Atlanta, he didn't have any idea of the cost of damages, what was considered major or minor damage, or anything in that area. But as he looked over the ship, he thought it wasn't that bad. It made him a bit sad: he had always been proud of Lady Nonamia, how strong and unbreakable the ship seemed. Now there was an ugly break in it. Oh, well, someone would get it fixed and it would look better than ever. At least, until the next idiot fired at them with a cannon or they knocked into another stalactite. It was funny. During missions, it was rare Luc remembered the point in time where the ship got damaged. But sure enough, when the smoke cleared and the mission was over, an ugly crack in the ship appeared.

He looked over at Atlanta leaning over the banister, trying to see the damages. Oh, please let this end well... Walking over, he murmured, "Doesn't look too bad..." Although Luc wasn't afraid of heights (on this ship, you couldn't be), he always thought of how long a way down it would be. Then they'd hit the sea, or perhaps land. Depends where they were, and Luc didn't pay attention to navigation. Luc wondered what falling would feel like. Terrifying, probably. Beside him, he heard Atlanta shout out. Then Atlanta, slipping. "Atlanta!" Wrapping is arm around her abdomen, he pulled her back from the railing until he felt the wall of the ship. As he let her go, he felt a slight burning in his arm. The scratch had opened up again, bleeding slightly. Luc scavenged around in his pocket for more bandages, but finding none. "Doll, you alright?"

For a long second, Atlanta laid still in Luc's arms, coming to terms with that she had nearly died. Her lungs began to burn, and her deep inhale jerked her out of a ragdoll limp. She slipped out of Lucky's arms, feeling her limbs and then quickly slapping herself on the cheeks. Staring at Luc nurse his arm, she berated herself quietly.

What has she been thinking? Not much, apparently, if her brain had drifted enough for her to actually slip. Dying, especially right now, was unthinkable--Roi still drifted somewhere in the unknown world of thieves, and Atlanta still had much to do with her very fragile life! "Be more careful, you stupid, scatterbrained mermaid!" The severity the duties stacked on her once again weighed down on her chest, just like the red pearl that was sure to now frown upon her shameful actions.

Lucky's concerned voice broke her out of a mental self-hate session, reminding her that she hadn't died because of this man. Testing her voice out with couple monosyllabic noises, she replied shakily, "I, I... Yeah, I'm okay. A..." She took a calming breath, "A little shaken up, but okay. You, though..." Guiltily, Atlanta prodded the wound her thoughtlessness had reopened. Her left hand pressured the cut, and her right searched for a small bandage from one of her many holsters. Triumphantly, it emerged with one, which she gently applied with a not-so-gentle, somber countenance. She was no Marina, and the medic would definitely chastise her for not only being cloud-headed, but injuring Luc again. "Please forgive me for my foolishness." She bit her lip. "I should have payed more attention."

Luc let Atlanta go, confident that she wasn't about to fall off the ship to certain death. She looked incredibly shaken, understandably. Falling off the ship was a death feared by almost all the pirates, more than being stabbed through the heart with a sword or a bit of poison slipped into your food by the cook. Flying through the clouds, unable to focus on anything but the ground hurtling toward you and the ship flying away from you. And then the crunch. Luc winced, this time not from the wound. "Need some cold water thrown on your face? Or perhaps would you like to stay in my arms a few seconds longer?" Luc joked weakly, trying to cheer up the solemn mermaid. How scared she had looked. She had thought she was going to die.

And now she was berating herself. Luc could tell. It's not only because of me...Luc thought slowly. Something else, maybe. We all have our pasts. Something we need to keep living for. "Listen, Atlanta, we all slip off the ship now and again. It's one of the dangers of being in the sky. It's not your fault. We just got to make sure someone keeps an eye out on deck." He smiled as Atlanta had the neccessary bandages. "Blame the bloke who slashed my arm, if anything. And besides, what's a scratched arm in comparison to a dead navigator? Not only would I hear no end of it from Cap'pn," Luc's smirk returned, "the next navigator could actually be ugly!" Luc shuddered as if that was a fate worse than death. "Thanks for fixing me up, by the way. Marina would kill me if I reopened my wound again, and she's not exactly the most attractive when she's angry."

Luc's jokes chipped away a little at her deep disgust with herself, and for that she was thankful, but she'd need to do a little target practice and soul-searching before she'd feel much better. It was normal for her to be so dramatic over these things; when the sole purpose of your life is "protect two stationary objects" and somehow you screw up even that, there would definitely be a bit of pessimism over yourself deep down. Her family pride kept her from voicing it, and her caring nature made sure she tried not to effect her other teammates. Sighing, she collected herself and hid away her feelings for later--right now there was a crew member trying to lift her spirits, and she was completely ignoring him!

"I'm pretty sure it's not the unattractive nature of it you avoid," Atlanta offered, doing her part to lift the mood as well. Marina was justified in being angry, she believed, since the pirates often made wounds worse that she had just healed. "I don't feel like checking out the ship anymore, to be honest. And now that your wound has just become more severe... Let's do something else." It was the truth--Atlanta figured that in order to punish herself for her own stupidity, she'd remain on the ship when it docked and instead of resting, she'd look at damages herself. However, it lessened her guilt a tiny increment, and she wondered how to could apologize to Lucky more. Words were nice, yes, but in her line of work, some extra ka-ching! went a long way.

"Maybe I'll give him a bit more to spend? He does run out of it pretty quickly..." Thinking over her decisions, she supposed she give him her share too. She was going to be too busy looking at the ship to gallivant, and the notion made her feel somewhat lighter inside. Looking at Luc, she waited to hear his plans before pondering what to do herself.

Lucky Lucas

Atlanta was still down, Luc could tell, but at least she was trying to be cheerful. Ah, well, when we land in Gambino, I'll buy her a drink. That really cheers anybody up. From the last time he had landed, he had forged together a few ancient artifacts and sold a few. That didn't get him much money, but comfortable enough in Gambino. Atlanta didn't have much fun, Lucky knew, and would probably do something legit and therefore boring in Gambino. Lucky knew that whatever he'd do, whether it be stealing, drinking, or fighting, he'd probably be grateful at the end of the journey to leave. Gambino was nice, but man did it give him a headache after a while.

Luc kicked back, leaning against the wall now. "What!? A mermaid who doesn't want to work? Wants to relax!? Soon you'll be out on the deck there, trying to get a tan!" Looking at the bandages, he frowned. "Honestly, Atlanta, the scratch is not that bad. Just a bit of blood." He thought of what to do. A small part of him wanted to go back to sleep, but a. Atlanta was still pessimistic about herself and b., if Luc suggested they both go to sleep, the words might very well twist themselves into a bawdy joke. Perhaps on another day, he would make that joke, but he honestly didn't feel like getting punched in the face today. "Hmm. Well, we could go bother Cook, but the last time I bothered Cook I thought he would slip poison into my food for a week. But," He inclined his head slightly, hearing footsteps and muffled words very near them, "I do hear someone. Now, it could be Charlotte, which would be fine, or it could be Marina, in which I will run in the opposite direction very quickly."

He frowned. "Well, Atlanta, what shall we do that won't agitate my fatal injury." Luc rolled his eyes. "There isn't much we can do until we hit Gambino, where there is a thousand things to do. We could go see who else is meandering around the ship at such a lovely hour. Don't worry," he winked, "I won't tell about your little falling stunt if you tell them that I accidentally reopened my wounds lifting a crate full of replacement ship parts, aye?"

Atlanta's face puckered up at Lucky's teases, switching the thoughts of her being dumb with the idea that she overworked. She didn't do too much... Did she? Picking out facial features from Luc's face, Atlanta considered she needed some relaxation. And by relaxation, she meant swim--which, she determinedly huffed, would come after the ship checkup. Her personality had taken a bit of a hit from being in the sky so long; maybe imitating Lucky would prove her some good?

Visions of her sprawled on the deck lazily and piles of gold left unchecked flashed across her mind, and Atlanta firmly decided, "absolutely never, one Lucky is enough for the ship."

"I'd," Atlanta placed a practiced hand on her collar bone to elegantly gesture to herself, "prefer not getting yelled at by Marina, and Charlotte..." While Charlotte did not do anything personal against her, Atlanta found herself awkward and nerved with the mage--she supposed it was the whole hypnosis thing, which she found useful, but intrusive to the mind. Just to keep herself from being hypnotized, Atlanta would avoid fighting completely. Also, being hurt sucked, with low pain tolerance a given in mermaids.

That left them with bothering the cook. Maybe he could use help? The ship's crew did have large appetites, and back at home, she never heard of less than four people manning the kitchen. "Let's go to the kitchens. Yulan could need... Taste testers." Luc's recollection of the cook didn't bother her much, though. Like she, their culinary talent worked hard and she respected that. What did put her on edge that tiiiny bit was that, also like she tended to, Yulan could get prickly in the middle of work.

As the two came upon voices not too far off, Char recognized the joking manner of Luc quite immediately. If any one voice was heard most often on the Lady, it was his. Char thought to the saying of "a wise man speaks when he has something to say; a fool speaks to say something." A slight grin developed inside her lips, never reaching the surface, connecting Luc to the definition of fool. But this was all the fun of being a pirate - all the Crew was so comfortable around one another, everyone was constantly making fun of something in one way or another. The language tended to get raunchy, inappropriate, even, for an outsider, but then, that was just their life.
Remembering Marina's presence though, Char checked herself. Although the crew might be able to make such comments and jokes to one another, the doctor was a different story. The pixie was so... refined and proper. At least that was how everyone else saw her. Char had a feeling she was different around certain people - the Captain, for instance. But Marina had never made that fun side very noticeable to the rest of the 'family', if that side did indeed exist. There had been plenty of things mentioned about her having a stick up her... well, she tended to be uptight and worrisome, to say in the least. As much as Char liked helping out with the doctor, she wasn't exactly cheery company.
With these thoughts, though, came guilt. The woman turned a direction away from Luc's voice, through a door and down a corridor.
"Yes, well, we all know how... reckless... Calcifer can be when it comes to his own health."
As they moved along, eyes adjusting to the darkness of the inner ship, Char felt the familiar sensation of a cat twirling around her feet. She heaved the little beggar up onto her shoulders, recognizing the Siamese as her oldest and most friendly companion, Fellow. She stroked the cat who purred up against her ear, and looked back to the ancient.
"But how are you faring, Marina? You worry so much about the rest of us, sometimes I wonder if you forget to think about your own well-being."
They arrived in Lady Nonamia's galley, where Cook grumbled away, as usual, at the stove. She pointed to one of the rough stools in the corner for Marina to sit upon, and, staying out of Cook's way, stole a cup of tea from breakfast. Char knew well enough that Cook did not particularly like her in the galley, for she often trailed a cat along with her. And although Cook wasn't exactly into keeping an immaculate kitchen, he didn't appreciate the begging the cats did. He really didn't appreciate much of anyone in his kitchen at all. But that didn't stop her - not if she didn't make it obvious she was in the room, anyway.
She spoke quietly, although the ruckus Cook was making could mask their voices easily.
"We would have nothing if we didn't have our healer, after all."
The cup of tea she put in Marina's hands as she settled on the stool next to her was cold, but she didn't think the doctor would mind; again, that was just ship life.

Luc nodded lazily. "I suppose so." He didn't perform magic, and he vaguely remembered that Yulan didn't approve of it. Then again, he really couldn't perform magic. Luc didn't much mind that. Most of the species who could usually got into terrible squabbles over it. Much more useful just to sit outside of the fighting, ready to use human tools when neccessary. Getting up, he offered a hand to Atlanta. "Let's go see Yulan." Walking along the deck, he took a glance over the edge again. Impossible to see if they were over land or water.

Going through one of the many hallways of the ship, he passed few people and waved when they passed. The hallway wasn't very wide, he often had to shuffle awkwardly around people coming the opposite direction. Still, he quickly made it to the galley where he heard Yulan making some food. It smelled pretty good, and his stomach rumbled. It was fantastic having a good cook aboard the ship. Yulan wasn't the easiest guy to talk to, but he wasn't unbearable by any means. Besides, as long as he didn't mess up the kitchen or get in the way, he didn't think Yulan minded much.

"Oh, hello, lovely ladies." Luc smirked, noticing the mage and the doctor. A feline friend twirled around Char's legs, which would probably stir up Yulan's anger if he saw it. "Hello, Yulan!" Luc said loudly, trying to be heard over the sound of pots banging together. "So how are you two doing today? You both look fantastic. Let's see how much we can converse before Yulan catches wind of us and kicks us all out."

Nodding, Atlanta took the proffered hand, using Luc's strength to hoist herself off the ground. She walked beside him, carefully on the side not next to the edge of their vessel. She would drown before falling over again. Drown!

There wasn't much said during the actual trip, just a pleasant silence the mermaid couldn't believe Lucky could actually hold. Occasionally they'd pass other pirates, and while Luc used his voice to greet them, Atlanta would nod only. It was common facts around the ship she wasn't the most approachable, so no one would feel too insulted by her lack of acknowledgment.

Surprisingly Marina and Char were already stationed at the kitchens, conversing amiably. That somewhat ruined her plans of avoiding the two, but they had just as much right to be in the kitchens too--Atlanta would have to deal with the hypnotist.

A soft mewl directed Atlanta's attention to the floor, and what she found immediately put her on edge; her muscles stiffened and her stomach gave a sickening lurch. One of the other reasons Atlanta avoided Char like the plague... Her cats. Common knowledge was that mermaids were obviously part fish, and cats, well, ate fish. The little feline couldn't really do much to her, since she had height and weight on the animal, but the itty-bitty fishy down in Atlanta's brain told her ohmigawd a cat RUN! Despite her dislike of Char's pets, demanding the creature be thrown overboard was a little unreasonable, so she would deal. If the thing started looking at her toes the wrong way, however, that was entirely a different story...

Taking Luc's lead, Atlanta looked off to the side and waved in greeting, ignoring the cat to the best of her ability.

Marina
Ship Doctor

Marina too heard the boisterous voice of one of the few, completely regular humans on board – Luc. It had become her nature as old age had set in, so the pixie couldn’t help but worry a bit over the man. She had not been able to fully heal him, like she had done with others. By the time he had made it to her, the doctor had used up a considerable amount of energy – switching to her larger form to help mend the crew and conserve her powers. It was a known fact that Marina’s crystals were one hundred percent effective, but easily the most painful experience someone could ever have. And it was even worse when the pixie was in her larger form – having less control over the substance. She could not risk the safety of the people of the crew and had instead used the less effective methods of humans, which took too long for the injuries to heal fully in her opinion. (Having a body that healed so quickly due to the bond had installed that impatience into her.)

Still, many would probably assume that Marina did not like the fighter. Of course it was her duty to keep the members of the crew in tip-top shape, but given how reserved she was it was an easy jump to think she would not care for such a rowdy personality. Which was most certainly not the case. How could Marina dislike a happy-go-lucky kind of man? She loved the Captain, and he was easily the most joyous person on the entirety of the ship. That is where the root of the assumptions that circled around the doctor. It was true that time had subdued her emotions and reactions, but she was not as stiff as the other crew members would believe her to be. But, they would probably never find that out, for Marina did not care about their opinions on her –she knew who she was – to make an effort to change drastically enough for people to notice. It seemed almost a shame, really.

What could be done about the matter was not something to be dealt with today, as Marina followed the mage back into the areas in the ship that were closed off from the outside and the sky. As they moved along, the only sound the pixie made to Char’s comment was to hum in affirmation. There was little need to say anything more on the subject. Silence fell upon the two for a moment, until Marina made another sound. Seeing the cat before it brushed against its master, Marina thought back to the horrifying tales she had heard of the beasts. It seemed that her earthy brethren had the most trouble with the felines, as the animals were prone to eat the pixies that were one with the earth. Watching the cat in front of her lap up the affection she was being given, a murmur of a chuckle escaped her lip – so soft it could be mistaken for a sigh – remembering the faces of the pixies who had told her those tales. She wondered how they would react to seeing one so docile.

Charlotte’s next question was a little surprising. It was not that she thought that no one would be concerned about her; it was just that Marina understood that there was a distance between her and the rest of the crew – asides from the Captain of course. It caused a kind little smile to settle on her lips. “I am faring well; there is no need for concern. I do not forget, I just require so little in accords to my well-being.” It was true. The bond kept her so much healthier compared to how she was before, it seemed like nothing to the pixie to keep herself at her best. It really wasn’t “nothing”, but that was just how Marina saw it as.

A break in their conversation occurred when they reached the kitchen, and Marina took the stool the mage had indicated for her to take. Sitting on it cross-legged was a precarious position given how the ship would still rock occasionally and how the stool was not exactly in the best of conditions, still Marina seemed to take no mind to the fact. This was just the most comfortable sitting position for her.

Taking the stool beside her, Marina accepted the cup offered to her. When Char started up the conversation where it was left off, this pixie just smiled sadly at the mage. How wrong was the cat-loving woman. It was true that every ship needed a doctor or a healer aboard, but it could be anyone. It didn’t need to be Marina. The fact of the matter was that the only reason she was even onboard was because Cal was the Captain on this vessel. The crew would be nothing without their Captain, not her. So, instead of commenting back, the pixie dipped her finger into the cool liquid. She tasted what tea remained on her finger when she sucked gently on the digit. Returning it back into the cup, this time Marina watched as a few crystals grew around her finger. Liquid was much easier to manipulate into crystallizing than using nothing but her magic, so it was no difficult matter to do so in this form. With now an impending death within a foreseeable future, Marina almost wished she had the time to master her crystals in this form, to be able to heal when larger. There was no point in doing so, for she knew it was impossible to do with the time left. She still regretted nothing though.

It was lucky that Luc and Atlanta came when they did, for if they hadn’t, Marina would have most definitely remained in silence. With them appearing, the pixie inclined her head towards the two, a few strands of her murky hair slipping past her shoulders. “Hello.” She greeted the two. A moment passed as Marina directed her gaze to the cook, considering how long he would tolerant them inside his kitchen, before asking, “How’s your arm Lucas?”

Lucky Lucas

Luc took another glance at Char's cat, then back at Atlanta, who was trying her best to avoid eye contact with the feline. So the fish hates cats? Huh. He reached down to pet it. Back when he was Lucky the Merchant, he had a series of black cats, all named after star signs. Although Luc was never and was never going to be a scholar, he knew enough of irony to know that his customers got a chuckle from Lucky having a black cat around. And when your business wasn't exactly legit, it helped to make the customers laugh. It never troubled Lucky's conscience unduly to be a crooked merchant. There were far worse things he could be. Anyway, a few weeks before he joined the Nonamia crew, he got word from his contact that he was 'going out of business'.

Now, by 'going out of business', he meant that someone was going to come, rough him up a bit and destroy his shop, then threaten him if he should ever set up shop again. Depending on what city he was in, the thugs would either be the official police force or just some hired cutthroats. Currently, he was stationed in Gambino, who had long since decided that one crooked merchant was not a police-worthy matter. So it had been hired thugs. An hour before they were supposed to arrive, Lucky had packed all his things away and gotten his current black cat, Virgo, close to him. Virgo would follow him anywhere. A few cats back, Gemini, would never follow anyone, so Luc had gotten a little leash. It had made him look a bit silly.

Then they showed up an hour early. Lucky was good with his fists, always had been, but not against those with swords and guns and numbers. He'd always been proud of his fighting skills. It impressed the ladies. But, as one who knew he could be woken at any time with a knife pressed to his throat, he learned how to escape quickly and quietly. So in the mayhem of his shop being destroyed, Luc disappeared. Unfortunately, so did Virgo. Comforted by the fact that Virgo had originally been a stray and could probably survive on his own, he still missed his lucky charm. He hadn't gotten another cat, setting up another shop had proven to take quite a lot of time. And then he joined Lady Nonamia immediately after.

Taking a stool, he sat down opposite Marina and Char. "My arm's attractive as ever, thanks," He said, smiling. Perhaps Marina wouldn't notice the extra bandages on his arm. It was no matter either way. He had gotten hurt, Marina had fixed him, he had gotten hurt again, Atlanta had a few extra bandages. "So how are you all? Any wild parties you're planning to have in Gambino?" Both the doctor and the mage weren't very wild (Luc had begun to think that was a requirement for being a magical creature), but he liked to think that he was well-liked anyway. "Marina, how's Cap'pn? I've been sleeping on the deck all day, and he hasn't been around once to pull me up. Not to mention the fact that I haven't flirted with anyone today, except for poor Atlanta here, who came around to wake ol' Luc up to actually do work. Isn't that right, Atlanta?" He looked over at the mermaid, letting her decide if she would bring up the 'ship accident'. "I haven't seen anyone else at all today. If I didn't know better, I'd say you ladies don't like my charismatic personality." He shrugged. "Or you were actually doing work on the ship. Whichever."
