this one wasnt on the list so far... (theres a lot to read! wink ) but its one of my favourite quotes on the english language:

Quote:
"We don't just borrow words; on occasion, English has pursued other languages down alleyways to beat them unconscious and rifle their pockets for new vocabulary."
--James D. Nicoll

these are all quite funny!

I have a shirt that says, "English doesn't borrow from other languages. English follows other languages down dark alleys, knocks them over, and goes through their pockets for loose grammar."

Now I know where it came from biggrin

Actually your quote is more similar to an Eddy Peters quote

“Not only does the English Language borrow words from other languages, it sometimes chases them down dark alleys, hits them over the head, and goes through their pockets”

Cantonese is essentially what everyone else in China calls swearing.

It's funny because it's essentially true.

Cantonese sounds very harsh compared to Mandarin. So it sounds like Cantonese speakers are always mad while Mandarin speakers are never mad. I think it's because Cantonese is much more staccato and has some rather abrupt finals (e.g. luk6).

Ah, cool. It's nice to see one of these has a bit of truth to it. Most of them seem to be comparing a language to somewhat similar languages, or comparing a language to something really random.

Sockers

All Romance languages are essentially the same. Except French.
--Andreas Johansson

French is essentially the linguistic equivalent of a really bad tailgating accident in which all the final consonants either are lost or stuck on the windshield of the next car.
--Hanbing Feng

Grayowljsv

Portuguese is essentially Spanish as spoken by a Russian.
--Peter Clark

All three of these are soooo true. I swear, if a Russian spoke Spanish, it'd come out Portuguese. I can't believe there is a quote on it though. I've been saying that forever. (Although, someone probably mentioned it after over hearing it from someone else who read this quote leading to my false notion of original thought.) And FRENCH!!! I can read it, but it makes NOOOOO SENSE! Why the eff do you put all those letters when they don't say anything?! When do you hear the t in biscuit!! Where is the st in est?! It is ridiculous.

These are so funny because of how true they are.

And thank GANDHI someone has said this:
Spanish is essentially a language that should be called Castilian, for the relief of Basques, Gallegos and Catalans.
