Rookwood was feeling calmer now, he sipped his tea and the color began to return to his face. Internally he began berating himself for showing weakness. He took one last deep breath and exhaled slowly. Focusing on Scarlet, a small smile appeared. "I am confident that you would have asked even if you knew what my reaction would have been." He said knowingly, "Because you yearn to know." He was smiling again, finally over the initial shock of the subject of the Reaper being broached.
"Death is a being and at the same time is not a being." Rookwood explained, "I met him when an experiment with the veiled arch went wrong. The closest that I can explain it was that my conscience met with a being that exists in the thoughts of all who are dying. That being, over the centuries, has been made real within the consciousness of those with magic. A specter that haunts the dying minds of witches and wizards." He paused for a moment to collect his thoughts and then continued. "However, meetin with this specter comes with a price. For those who are dying, the price is their souls. For me who was not dying, it took only a portion." Rookwood touched his chest, "When the Dark Lord heard my story, He seemed very pleased. As if I had confirmed a suspicion that He had of some ancient magic."

Scarlet sat in a state of quiet shock completely forgetting about her tea. She listened to Rookwood with wide scrutinizing and questioning eyes. She had tens of thousands of questions to ask, but didn't know where to start. Scarlet stared at Rookwood's chest where he had touched it in disbelief.
"Did...does..."she stuttered trying to reformulate her thoughts. "Did it hurt? I mean did you fall through the actual veil in your experiment or did some part of you enter it? Can you physically or mentally feel a difference? Does it cut a certain number of years off your life..."she cut herself off from the continual questions that seemed to spew from her mouth and mind unceasingly. "I'm sorry...I just..." She looked down into her empty tea cup.
