With some effort, Eri managed to bring herself to a standing position. She slowly made her way to Arannis, placing a gentle hand on his shoulder.
"Please do not apologize. Events may have happened that we did not wish for, but I am still honored to been able to stand by you and fight."

Arannis turned slowly, knowing full well the wisdom in her words. With hardly any hesitation, he hugged her, still crying.
"I can hardly imagine having to go for so long yet... as we are now. Will this never end...?"

She hugged him in return, gently stroking his back in a reassuring manner.
"All things must end sometime. I only wish that I could be certain of when."

"It will be quite some time, I imagine..."
Arannis' despair showed plainly in his tone.
"Do you remember when I told you there would be a time when I am simply willshattered...?"

Eri nodded, her heart aching at the memory.
"Yes, though I wish that the time would never come to pass."

Arannis backed away, staring blankly out the window.
"...It just has. The truth of everything, suddenly made so clear. An unwilling slave to fate, unable to know peace through all the strife... and yet in the knowledge of what will eventually become of himself."
He turned back to Eri.
"I cannot even begin to imagine how much suffering there is left in this..."

Her face creased in concern as her eyes looked to the floor. Suffering seemed to be an all to common theme recently and yet it was true, there was more to come. She could feel it. Fate had written out their entire lives and yet there was nothing to be done. Who is strong enough to go against something such as fate? Eri took a cautious glance at Arannis. How much he must have suffered already. She could hardly comprehend anymore herself.

"It may be best... if for the moment, we go our separate roads. As thankful as I am for your accompaniment when we started out... It's best that you not have to see this. Know this much, Eri..."
His expression showed only his love and concern.
"...In all my years since I met you, there were no less than a thousand times when the knowledge of you being there for me was all that maintained my will to live."

Eri felt her heart sink within her at these words. She knew well enough that this was only in her best interest, yet in the same aspect, she could not let him go through this alone. She remained silent for a moment, not wanting to leave him yet also not wanting to disobey his request. Her eyes sought his for some reassurance.
"If that is what you wish, then I do not have the right to question you. Yet I do not think that I can stand the grief of knowing what you face and allowing you to do so alone."

"Eri..."
Arannis took her hands into his own, the slightest of smiles lighting his face.
"For you to say you have no right to question me, who has done countless more wrongdoings than yourself, pains me. I have always seen you as a friend, and quite often, superior. While it would perhaps have been better for events that I do this alone, I will not deny you what solace you might find in coming with me."

"I would want nothing more than to see this through with you to the end. You have been there for me from the very beginning. It is only right that I return the favor to you."
Her hands gently squeezed his.
"Arannis, you are the only person left in my life. I do not want to be alone any longer."

"Never again... So I swear. Peacemaker, perhaps... but Lone be damned. Even the might of the Wonder will do precious little that a beloved companion cannot do. I would take the latter, any time I am given the chance."
Arannis drew Eri in for another hug, cherishing the strange peace that had seemed to come about the room.

Eri hugged Arannis tight, not willing to let go. Tears of happiness sprang to her eyes, but they went unhindered. Yes, the future was full of fear and suffering, as was the past, but the present was more than she could have wished for, and she prayed that it might last.

Arannis wrapped his arms gently around Eri, but before even five seconds, he put a hand to his head.
"Not so soon... why now, of all times?"
