Kaiden Skyheart________ Our fear of the darkness now is nothing next to their fear of the coming dawn.
A few minutes out, huh? Well, as long as they didn't have to deal with any big ones, then they'd only have one course of action, to scale the walls. Which left them one place to meet them. Kaiden hustled back up the stairs of the east turret again. But by the time he got to the stop, all was still. Nothing moved within range of the torchlight. As the commotion of archers and soldiers lined the ramparts of the gatehouse, the wind and rain picked up intensity, but nothing seemed to suggest that the night was anything more than mildly uncomfortable.
"Okay...." Kaiden mused, "well if they are out there, they're taking their sweet-"
Suddenly the corporal was interrupted by a strange, humming sound that proved warning just before a black-tipped arrow struck stone, bouncing off the crenelation just a ways down the defensive line. Immediately soldiers crouched down low into cover as that arrow was followed by dozens more from out of the darkness, shortly before a horde of demons burst forth from the darkness into the light.
He could not have described the monsters down below, it would have been impossible. It was a whole swarm of different shapes and sizes. Fangs, claws, and horns of all kinds. Some humanoid, some resembling wild animals, and some not resembling anything known to the world at all.
At someone's (Kaiden couldn't see who) command, the archers on the wall released their arrows, and Kaiden reached over to a spear rack for a javelin and waited for the horde to draw within throwing range.

Staying within range of Kaiden so she could speak if need be, Cashmire carefully retreieved her own javalin from the weapon's rack. Her confidence had alwasy been higher with a sword, but the javelin was steady enough within her hands. Resisting the urge to peer over the wall, knowing that if she did, she could very well get an arrow in her eye, she kept her ground, eyeing the edge of the wall suspiciously. With a frown, she adjusted the straps of the shield she wore on her left arm, forcing her nervousness back. There was no reason to stress out, the demons may not even reach the top. After all, there were several guards, and most of the monsters would be shot down, right?
Yet, she could hear the commotion atop the building rise, as more and more people seem to become brazen with thier attacks, suddenly unafraid with a threat below thier feet. She was surprised, finding it odd that their mood seemed to change naturally, and that most, besides newbies such as herself, were completely prepared to spill blood.

"Now Cashmire!" Kaiden directed, rising up just long enough to heft the javelin and send it hurtling into the crowd of demons that had just gotten to the base of the gate. He wasn't particularly aiming for anything, but neatly skewered what looked like some kind of hound. Reaching over for another javelin on the rack, he looked back down to realize that several demons had begun to scale the wall, using claws, magic, whatever they could to reach the defenders on top. Worse, several in the crowd had begun to sprout wings and fly.
That was going to make things a bit more difficult.
Kaiden grunted as he threw his next javelin, catching a winged serpent in the torse and sending it plummeting to an unspectacular death on the field below. But as the fliers swarmed over and began landing on the wall, he abandoned the javelins in preference of his best weapon.
A steely hiss sounded as he drew his blade out of its scabbard. Bringing his shield to the fore as several other guardsmen took up lances and swords, Kaiden took a swipe at a demon that flew overhead, though missed as the enemy quickly banked out of range.
This is where the battle got serious.

Cashmire threw her javelin with a certain amount of ferocity that came with practice and energy. She could feel the section in her mind that told her to fight or flee. Biting her lip, she watched as demons breached past the lines, scaling over walls and spilling onto the small paths atop the walls. They were terrifying, wither by grotesque or beauty, they held a certain prescence that let her feel her fear.
Her eyes closed as she felt her back against a wall, and she stood in thought for a moment. She had to get past this feeling now, or die. It was her, or them. EIther she and her comrades died, or these creatures had to die. Slowly, her thoughts came back into her surroundings, and she retrieved her sword from its scabbard with renewed passion. She had to fight, and she hoped that the precious moments she took to mentally prepare herself payed off.
Willfully, she moved as close to the wall's edges as possible, her mind set on protecting this city from any threat.
