The shopping district reminded Gilly of New York City, and walking through the streets, with street vendors selling roasted nuts, the staple of New York, the hot dog, and pizza, gyros, ice cream, and for those adventurous folk, food that Gilly had never even seen. But of course, her grandfather and herself had made it a Sunday tradition to go out in the morning, and grab food until they were stuffed. Where others went to church, the two went for grub.

Although she still had the topic of Grex's idiotic appearance, Gilly put it out of mind, and followed Masato to Yggdrasil. "Ah, an outside table, please." Gilly asked, and smiled as the waiter went inside to get a few menus. "It's a nice day outside, and why not enjoy it?"

The place was quite close to the World Tree, and it the warm feeling was due to the World Tree's strong magical particles surrounding the area around it. It was like taking a warm bath and having a warm towel on hand for you after you got out. The feeling was rejuvenating for Gilly, like she'd been reborn. With a happy sigh of content, Gilly took a seat on a dark iron wrought chair outside. The small round, cafe-esque table matched the two chairs that were at the table, and a maroon umbrella was stationed in the middle of the table, protecting from fall debris that could potentially get in the food.

The waiter placed one menu on the table, but Gilly motioned for one more, and pulled out the chair opposite from her, to offer it to Masato. The waiter gave her a puzzled look, and his eyes flicked from Masato to Gilly, but shrugged his shoulders. The customer was always right. Opening up her own, Gilly looked at the menu, scanning it for good eats. "Masa-kun, how do you know of this place?" Gilly asked, the thought coming to her. "Have you been to Mahora before?"

Masato jumped up on one of the wrought iron chairs next to Gilly and wrapped his tail around his legs after Gilly pulled the chair out and watched the waiter set a second menu down before politely excusing himself and going back inside, giving them time to decide on their order. It was very busy inside and their fall promo attracted a lot of customers. Fortunately, they were the only ones outside for now and Yggdrasil was a bit out of the way, so Masato could talk to Gilly without revealing his magical nature.

"Thank you, Gilly-san," Masato thanked Gilly politely for pulling a chair out for him and asking the waiter for a second menu. Masato's eyes scanned through his menu after he flipped it open with his paw and immediately found the jager schnitzel and the apple strudel before Gilly asked him how he knew the place and asked him if he'd been to Mahora before.

"I haven't been in Mahora very long, to be honest. Only a few months since I'd been traveling all around Japan running from the Koga hunter-nins, even going into Iga territory in the Kansai region just to lose them prior to coming here. However, a few months is enough for me to find every good place to eat in this place. A fox has to eat, right? And I'm too proud to raid trash bins or beg for scraps. Killing small creatures for food and eating them raw was never my thing either. However, of all the places I've eaten at...err...stolen food from , Yggdrasil is the best. I wouldn't have brought you here if it weren't," Masato said before smiling at Gilly. "You'll love their steak and desserts. I strongly recommend it and their apple strudel is heavenly. You may also want to try their schlagobers. It's rich coffee with whipped cream and ground cinnamon sprinkled elegantly up top. Perfect with their desserts and good for keeping the chill off you as well."

"Say....Gilly-san. If you don't mind me asking, where are you from originally? Or where did you live before coming to Mahora? Aside from not being entirely human, you seem quite different from most of the people here. Not that it's a bad thing. I actually think what makes people different makes them more interesting," Masato asked Gilly while tilting his head slightly and one of his ears twitched involuntarily. Everyone had to come from somewhere and perhaps Gilly had an interesting story about her home or at least where she was from.

Perusing the menu while Masato talked, Gilly decided on the jager schnitzel and another order of apple strudel, along with the schlagobers. Although the menu was written with Japanese characters, English, and German, Gilly mouthed the word out in English, and grinned slightly. Hard language.

"I hope my cooking has deterred you from your thieving past, Masa-kun." Gilly teased, but looked back to her menu. "Although with the speed that you had when you stole that bento...I wouldn't be surprised if you were at Mahora for years, and never went without food. Amazing..." Gilly murmured, remembering the speed that Masato demonstrated when he skillfully stole Gilly's bento. Although he'd been outnumbered, he still kept up a pretty good chase throughout the woods.

Closing her menu, signaling to the waiter that she, at least, was done ordering, Gilly's ears perked up as Masato asked her a question. "I suppose we don't know much about each other, huh?" Gilly laughed, a little embarrassed that she hadn't given a good introduction about herself. Thinking back on it, she was surprised Masato had trusted her this far along. "Before I went to Mahora Academy last year, I lived in New York City." Gilly began, and nodded at Masato's observation. "I was born here in Japan though, but I did most of my growing up in America, so I don't have a Japanese accent. My English is fairly good, but it could use work!" Gilly admitted, rubbing her neck. Although English was a required course in the American curriculum, Gilly had never really taken a liking to English: it was a lot different than Japanese, which she regarded as her first language.

"I lived in New York City with my grandfather, who I mentioned previously." Gilly smiled brightly at the thought of her beloved grandfather. "He's the best! He's my legal guardian. My mom..." Gilly hesitated, the thoughts of her mother stirring up trouble in her mind, but she was resolved to tell Masato her past. It was only fair. "My mom committed suicide in our home in northern Japan, when I was a child. She...hanged herself. My father had gotten a divorce a few years before that, and we lost contact with him. Grandpa came and brought me to New York, and trained me to control my inner demon." Gilly finished quietly, pointing to her head. "Ever since my mom died, he's been my legal guardian. I don't even think of my father as my dad." Gilly added bitterly. "Grandpa sent me to Mahora Academy, because he wanted me to return to Japan, and to attend the same school my mother and father did."

Indeed, there was another reason that Gilly's grandfather desired her to go to Mahora, but she was not aware of his theory. He thought that the magical particles and influence in Mahora's atmosphere would help to strengthen the mental strength of Gilly's human side, unconsciously, so that Gilly could be in control of her body more often, if not all the time. It was just a theory of his, but he wanted to test it out. Besides, the academy seemed to be doing good for the girl.

Masato chuckled as Gilly tried reading the menu in German before casually correcting her pronunciation. "Don't worry, Gilly-san. German takes a bit of getting used to before you can speak it properly. I had my tongue tied in knots before I got it right, but I can teach you. And your cooking is enough to turn even the most hardened food thief around, believe me," Masato told Gilly while smiling. "And I've had to be fast since they turned me into what I am. Faster than my pursuers at the very least, but all my skills are at your service from this point forward," he said in response to Gilly's next remark. He then listened to Gilly speak about having been born in Japan, but growing up in New York. Masato had been to nearly every corner of Asia, the American West Coast, the Magic World, and even parts of Europe but he had never been to New York. He continued listening to Gilly's story as she spoke fondly about growing up in New York with her grandfather, but her tone darkened as she spoke about her mother's suicide and not exactly being on good terms with her father.

"I'm sorry about your mother," Masato said with his ears drooping a bit. "I saw what she did when I tapped into your mind and it honestly shocked me, seeing it from your perspective. As for my father...well...I never knew him. He died just days before I was born...killed by Iga ninjas and my mother soon followed. I was actually raised by my grandparents and some close family friends, so I can empathize. I love my grandparents dearly and all those I grew up around and helped to raise me were like family to me. Family isn't just those who are related to you by blood. It's those who care about you most, who strive hardest to provide for you, and would risk life and limb without fear to protect you." And it was true. Many of the children in Masato's village were orphans from the generations-long war with the Iga and other hostile clans and they were like blood to each other.

"That's what family was to me and many of the children who grew up in my village...we were all brothers and sisters in a sense and every one of the adults was like a parent. If you were among us, we would have taken you in and welcomed you as one of our own." Masato paused for a second while looking towards Yggdrasil's entrance. The waiter should be back pretty soon. "There are people like that for you here, Gilly. Many would risk their necks to protect you or shed blood for your sake from what I've seen. And I'm no different," Masato said before his right ear twitched and he heard footsteps towards the door.

"Oooh...the waiter is here!" Masato exclaimed almost comically before he shut his trap just in time and acted like a normal pet that couldn't speak. The waiter apologized for making them wait and then took out an order slip and a pen before asking them if they had decided what they wanted. Masato, while swishing his tail happily, put his paw on the steak as well as the apple strudel on the menu while Gilly stated her order. She had good taste judging by what she said and he was almost certain she'd get more after tasting the quality of the food there.

((OOC: English. Gilly mouthed it out in English, haha. But that's fine. ^_^))

Satisfied with Masato's comment about her cooking, Gilly felt herself brighten up, but nodded solemnly at Masato's remorse, when he recalled what he saw in Gilly's mind. She sympathized with Masato, as he had been raised by his grandparents too. "My grandmother died before I was born. The way my grandpa talks about her..." Gilly sighed a little, resting her chin on her hand. "I wish I could have met her. My grandpa, you know, he was born with a human appearance in a demon village. He was originally hated for that." Gilly mentioned, and sat back in her chair, and looked thoughtfully at the sky. "My grandma hated him too, at first. But then he showed her that humans weren't so bad after all." Gilly grinned at Masato. "Grandparents really are something, huh? That's what I want to do. I want to show demon hunters and humans that demons aren't so bad."

"Thank you." Gilly smiled warmly at Masato. "Just as I welcome you here too! You're officially one of us now. I owe you at least that, and much more. I'm...I'm very sorry for your loss of your parents though. I can't imagine what it would be like to not know one parent."

"Jager schnitzel and apple strudel, please." Gilly asked politely. From her Japanese, you'd never guess she was an American. The waiter scribbled it down on his order slip, and began to walk away, before Gilly motioned for him to come back, and she pointed to Masato's menu as well. Confused and bewildered, the waiter opened his mouth to point out that pets can't talk, before looking at what Masato's paw was on: the steak and apple strudel. Looking to Gilly for assistance, she merely nodded her head with a serious look, a smile pulling at the corners of her mouth. With an exasperated sigh, the waiter put down Masato's order, and left to bring it to the kitchen.

Waiting until he was completely gone, Gilly couldn't hold it in anymore, and burst out laughing. "Did you see the look on that poor guy's face? Masa-kun, you should come to restaurants more often!" Gilly exclaimed, clearly delighted.
PostPosted: Tue Nov 23, 2010 9:55 pm

Masato laughed with Gilly, holding his chest with his paws and rolling on his back; his hind legs gyrating for a few seconds while waving his right front paw at her before sitting back up, shaking his head, and chuckling. "That was great! We really should do this more often," said while smiling and sitting up straight. "I am not going to forget that look on his face for a very long time," Masato said while chuckling again.

"And don't worry about my parents or your grandmother. We'll see them all again one day and I'm sure they'd hate to see us miserable about their loss. Until then, I think they'd want us to be happy and have as much fun as we possibly can. And today is the perfect day for such!" It most definitely was. Their food came several minutes later and Masato silently slipped a pair of 100-yen pieces under his paw out of nowhere as a tip to the waiter. The waiter gave him another strange look or surprise before looking at Gilly again quizzically, suppressing the urge to stutter and ask if she trained him to do that or if Masato was some sort crazy sentient fox creature from his sister's favorite fantasy novel.

Gilly grinned, and raised her glass of water to Masato. "Hear, hear! I'm going to complete my grandparents' mission and philosophy. I won't give up my life to some fiend that only wants destruction." Gilly said, before taking a sip of her water.

The entree came first, and the dessert would come a bit later. Glancing at the poor waiter with a shrug, Gilly looked back to her food, grin at the corners of her mouth. The waiter left, after glancing back numerous times at the pair. He seriously needed to rethink his job.

It was a veal steak, hearty, topped with a creamy mushroom sauce. There were garnishes, like a lemon wedge on the sides, and cilantro dropped delicately on the top of the steak. There were some greens on the side with a light delicate taste, to complement the main masterpiece, the jager schnitzel.

Provided with a knife and fork, Gilly picked them up, expertly cutting off a piece, and placed it in her mouth. Upon chewing it, Gilly nodded thoughtfully. "Succulent." Gilly briefly stated, before going back for another piece. "Really good! Nice suggestion, Masa-kun! I can imagine why you'd steal from here." Gilly grinned, but looked at her veal seriously, as if she was studying it. "I really must try this at home...maybe not with veal though. A bit hard to get, and maybe alter the sauce...?" Gilly was in her own world now, as she was studying the workings of this delicious platter of food. She felt happy though, and extremely determined now, to not let her demon side get the best of her. She had to continue that goal of letting humans and demons coexist. It would be impossible to achieve that, if she'd let her demon side take control. She couldn't afford to let that happen.
PostPosted: Thu Nov 25, 2010 9:14 pm

"Most demons you see are part of or spawned from the original third that were cast down from heaven...or what's left of them," Masato spoke after the waiter left and happily chewing and swallowing a piece of his steak. "And demon-kin are their descendants. I agree with your grandparents' reasoning. Many of those original and ancient demons are irrevocably evil and beyond redemption, but the same doesn't necessarily hold true for their descendants," he spoke again before eating another small piece of steak. "It's not like they chose to be the way they are and neither did all those half-youkai children who were born after the Youkai War broke out years ago. They don't deserve the prejudice and hatred that their own people and humans deal out against them. They deserve a fair chance as much as anyone else."

The Koga clan, practically blind to race and color, actually took in many half-youkai children who had been abandoned by their own tribes and cast away by their mothers or fathers. Ayame was one of them. The circumstances behind her birth were particularly grim and previously thought impossible...a spawn between a hone-onna who maintained her human form long enough for a human male to actually impregnate her before she sucked the life out of him, leaving him as nothing more than a pile of brittle bones and dry ashes. She abandoned Ayame in the woods shortly after she was born and a group of Koga scouts found her, thinking she was a human child until they brought her back to the village. But Masato didn't care what she was and while some others feared her, he still loved her like no other to this day.

Masato, between bites, watched Gilly eat and saw she loved her food. That put a smile on his face and he was glad his owner was enjoying herself before a waitress instead of the previous waiter arrived with their apple strudel and Gilly's schlagober, setting their orders in front of them and politely asking Gilly if they needed anything else. Gilly seemed to be in her own happy little world with her food like a skilled machinist trying to reverse-engineer a fantastic new machine she found. Masato merely waited for Gilly to answer the waitress while he smiled at her with his eyes closed and his tail swishing behind him.

"Ian holds the same philosophy." Gilly added, looking up from her meticulous examination of her meal. "He's a demon hunter in training, but he's devoted to punishing the demons that harm. Wherever you go though, there's always such opposite views on this subject though..." Gilly sighed, a little troubled. "Just like demons, there's hunters that just want to crush them." Gilly couldn't help thinking about her uncle, the first son the Yamashita family, her father's brother. Although she hadn't heard much about her uncle, he was a retired vampire hunter, who took in an abandoned baby about her age now. She'd only met with her "cousin" a few times, but the word was, that her cousin had been bitten, and become a vampire. Her uncle had become furious, and had attempted to murder his adopted son. The Yamashita family was in ruins now.

"But Ian's different. That's why I really do love him." Gilly grinned sheepishly. It seemed that Gilly wasn't too serious around Ian a lot, but she really did care for the boy. She wasn't one to be serious around Ian though, and she would feel embarrassed if Ian knew about her worries about William.

"I'm really lucky I've met people like you and Ian though, Masa-kun." Gilly laughed. "Where have people like you been hiding?"

Almost finished with her steak, Gilly looked up at the sound of a female voice. Expecting that the pair had a different server now, Gilly shook her head politely, but opened up the menu to Masato, and held it out, giving him the option if he wanted anything. "Ah, by the way, ane-san..." Gilly paused, holding the menu open to Masato with one hand, and taking out some yen, about 1000 yen, and offering it to the waitress. "The nice waiter from before, could you give him this? I'm afraid we might have caused a little trouble for him, and his...troubles won't go unrewarded." Gilly added.

The waitress laughed a little. She was remembering the look on her coworker's face when he came in. He was mumbling to himself, and wringing his hands, constantly looking over his shoulder, until he had approached her, and asked if she'd take over his table. "Sure, of course, miss! Is that all?"

Gilly looked to Masato for a cue, if he was finished or not.
PostPosted: Sat Nov 27, 2010 2:28 am

Masato, with his eyes closed and smiling, nodded silently at the waitress while swishing his tail happily. He was quite full, though he wasn't sure if Gilly was yet. Gilly, while smaller than your average human male, could easily put a man to shame in terms of her appetite and capacity for food. He also noticed it was already afternoon and most of the students and other customers were leaving to go back to their work stations and clubs while the Yggdrasil staff thanked them for coming.

A thick steak with gravy and a serving of apple strudel...more than your average fox ate in one sitting. Masato waited to see if Gilly wanted anything else on top of what she just had.

The waitress, like her coworker, looked surprised at the fox's ability to understand human vocabulary and respond to it. But unlike her coworker, the waitress laughed, and stroked the top of Masato's head fearlessly. "You've got some pet there, kid! If you're finished then..." The waitress paused, and laid down the check. "Here's your bill! Thank you for coming!" The waitress then left to attend to another table.

Gilly smiled her thanks, and finished her steak, and quickly gobbled up her apple strudel, and started on her schlagober with tentative sips. She was never really a big fan of coffee when she was younger, but when she came to the US, she fell in love with coffee. "Mmm, really good..." Gilly murmured, and glanced at Masato. 'He seems happy. I wonder if he's really truly happy though. Being a fox, on the run...I don't think I could do that.' With her chin resting on one hand, Gilly observed Masato with a light smile. 'I know one day Masa-kun's going to leave here...he won't stay a fox. I'll make sure of it. Mahora...what kind of power do you have? I'll find that power! And I'll bend it to mine and Masa-kun's will!'

Finished with her sweet drink, Gilly stood up to go. It was afternoon, and she had skipped clubs the day before; maybe it was best to attend clubs. Gilly felt like such a rebel and bad student by skipping the whole day.

"Ready to go, Masa-kun?" Gilly asked, breaking the contented silence between the two.
PostPosted: Mon Nov 29, 2010 6:34 pm

Masato smiled as the waitress petted him and watched Gilly finish the rest of her order and pay the bill. "Anytime you're ready," Masato responded to Gilly as she got up to leave and he hopped off his chair after her, following right next to her. "There are two more days left on their fall promo and if you like, we could come to eat here again tomorrow."

Masato was glad Gilly enjoyed herself and it pleased him to see his new owner happy. However, if he remembered correctly, classes were now finished and Gilly like many other students could be heading to their respective clubs and extra-curricular activities. The Mahora university baseball team walked past them in a line, joking and laughing at each other as they finished eating and left for practice. That got Masato to wondering. "Hey, Gilly-san. Which club are you part of?" he asked curiously while padding lightly over the stone tiles beneath them.

He had never been part of a school club before or even been to a club meeting while growing up, unless you'd consider a ninja team a "club" or the rigorous and often brutal training sessions under Murata-sensei at his village club meetings. However, he figured Mahora's clubs and their activities were a lot more tame, but no less interesting.

Gilly left a tip, although it wasn't common in Japan, and most Asian countries, to leave a tip, for the waitress.

Walking back towards the school buildings, Gilly grinned and nodded with Masato's comment. "We should come back here again. Bring Wolfram-kun or Ian with. It's kind of a..." Gilly paused a blushed a little, looking back at the place, absorbing it in her eyes. "A romantic little place, I guess."

"Me?" Gilly asked, a little surprised. She was just thinking of clubs; Masa-kun seemed to read her mind. "Good question. Let me check..." Gilly paused, and took out her school schedule: it included her classes, clubs, and dorming information, along with a handy map of the campus and a good luck letter from her grandpa. "I'm in the Art Club, Library Exploration Club, and Cooking Club." Gilly responded. "I joined the cooking club, because well..." Gilly rubbed the back of her neck a little, a slight grin on her lips. It was pretty obvious why she joined the cooking club; she simply loved cooking.

"A lot of people don't know this, but I actually do like to draw. I'm...I'm not very good though, but I still like to do it. And library exploration, because of that rising demon problem..." Gilly grimaced. That was her reason last year, but she'd fallen in love with rappelling down bookcases, and learning more about magic, that she'd rejoined. "But now, I just like it because it's really fun. And dangerous. But it seems this year is no different from last year." Gilly sighed. Not that she didn't like a good fight against, in her opinion, an ignorant beast, but what if this demon problem was a never ending cycle? The large picture was. Like Gilly said herself, there would always be demons who are cruel and wicked, and there are the demons who aren't. But what did that mean for her beloved, Ian? Or her other loved one, her grandpa? Would they keep fighting this endless battle to bring peace?
PostPosted: Wed Dec 01, 2010 2:19 am

"Three clubs at the same time? Wow. You sure have a lot on your plate," Masato paused as he saw a small group of people coming their way, but spoke again as soon as they were out of earshot. "I could easily see why you joined the Cooking Club and the Library Exploration Club sounds quite interesting...but the Art Club?"

Gilly answered his question and clarified right off the bat. Now Masato understood, especially with regards to the demon problem in the lower reaches of the library. "You could say the same about the war between the Koga and the Iga, but think...what would happen if my side stopped fighting? What would happen if people like you, your grandfather, and Ian stopped fighting? To me, the consequences of either would be unthinkable," Masato spoke as he walked next to Gilly, looking around and listening to make sure there was no one around while he did.

"Every war has to end. The winter at Stalingrad must have felt like forever to the Soviets defending the city, but they broke the Nazis' backs and sent them running once spring came. The siege of Leningrad lasted much longer, but the brave defenders never wavered or broke in their resolve and the outcome was the same. They knew what was at stake. The demons you, Ian, Zoreken, and many others fight against fight for selfish pride, personal gain, and to bring humankind under the iron hand of slavery...we fight for our friends, our homes, our freedom, and families. So long as we're not the 'Nazis' in this conflict, we will continue winning. Blood will be shed, sacrifices will be made....but it will all be worth it in the end. Some things, no matter how long or costly, are just worth fighting for," Masato spoke like someone who had seen such things first hand. And he did.

Masato's father died to give him and the other people of his village a chance to see tomorrow and Masato himself shed much blood to do the same. It was when they became the "Nazis" in the war against the Iga that he tried stopping them and was branded as a traitor by those too blind to see what they had become. It was hard to be a good soldier in a rotten war. However, since he became Gilly's pet and magical familiar, he had a new war and a just cause to fight for.

Gilly laughed a little. "No, not really. We don't get too much homework to do, so I have time to enjoy times like this." Gilly gestured around her, and Masato and herself. "Clubs, I feel are important. Besides, Mahora seems to have interesting people, and clubs are the best way to meet them." Gilly stated.

"Winning? I don't think a battle like Ian and I fight, and the battle that your clan and the Iga clan fight has a winner." Gilly mused. "Despite how many victories either side gets, each side believes they're right. Battles are passed from generation to generation, one person's revenge becomes his offspring's revenge." Gilly sighed, stopping for a moment. They were close to the World Tree, as they hadn't walked too far from Yggdrasil, and it was warm outside, even warmer now that it was afternoon. The leaves around the World Tree area were beginning to change color, and fall. "What is the end, Masa-kun? When is it? As long as there is opposition, I'll fight. We'll fight. Maybe 'to win' isn't the objective. Maybe it's just not the way to end a war..." Gilly murmured, continuing her stride.

"...But maybe to sympathize with the enemy. And use that understanding to make them realize the errors of their ways. I don't...want to let my battles become my childrens' battle." Gilly grinned a little. "What kind of mother would I be if I let my children fight for something that I should have already given them? Instead of winning, why don't we make it so there is no enemy. So that there is no opposition that we can fight against. Why don't we make our enemy our ally?"
