I only counted states where I've stayed (at least) overnight and spent time exploring. I've driven through a few others but didn't really explore.

The only countries I've explored outside of the US are Mexico, Belgium and the UK. I've lived in Ohio for the last 20 years, just a stone's throw from Canada, but for some reason I've never gone across. I should rectify that!
