huh... that's interesting.... o.o
still, i can't shake my belief that the choice should always be open. sweatdrop i do feel that there are ways to keep the industry safe, clean, and ethical, even if not eliminating the unattractiveness of such a job or career.
i'm still very much a Libertarian Socialist, upholding my beliefs that the american standards of Liberty and Equality should be this nation's guiding and defining principles.

I agree, but ultimately this doesn't seem to happen when it's legalized outright.
Essentially it doesn't affect the person who chooses to pay a prostitute without abusing her (or him). It only really applies to the cases in which the prostitute is being exploited or abused. In the case where it's legal it's very difficult to actually deal with this issue (as has been noted in regions that have gone down the legalization road). This law doesn't tend to be abused, so it doesn't affect the respectful John. I mean, with the taboo associated with prostitution alone it provides control to how this legislation is actually used. All it really does is protect prostitutes -- while the buying is illegal the aim and the effect of this isn't actually to outlaw it.
Legalization has tended to make this industry absolutely thrive, without really making it a great deal safer.

I'm a conservative independent. Since the first 13 colonies, Americans have been doing whatever the hell they want. Making something illegal is just a way to make it more appealing to the American spirit.
Perhaps prostitution needs to revert to the old "Guild" practices, and make it illegal to operate without a guild license. But then there's the foraging of official documents and all that.
I kinda wish there was still a frontier--in the "old west" 150 years ago, prostitutes were relatively well treated because men outnumbered women 10-to-1. So for every one man who mistreated a woman, there were 9 others ready to string him up for it. ^_^ Simple, easy, and "legal."

@ Figuren: aye, definately so... that is realy why i think there needs to be a serious effort to discourage the industry in the first place at the same time as protecting the men and women who get into it. Education, Social Work, Counciling, Therapy... these are the influences that function as cleanup for many issues, prostitution included.
i am of course opened to other ideas, i'm willing to let things rest at "functional and happy" if need be. i just feel that my ideal goes beyond it. xd
@ Frost: i dunno, the whole Guild idea is like the antithesis of the Union paradigm. confused it plays on the needs of a corporation, not of the workers. it has alot of potential to be corrupt and exploitative. but again, i'm not a big fan of capitalism, which is the whole point of establishing Guilds.

So I guess the best answer is to make women such a rare commodity that their protection is assured for the sake of continuing the species. Not really a solution in the modern sense... xp

Hypothetically, if we lived in an environment where men outnumbered the women say 50:1, not every man could have one all to himself unless he was really lucky or really rich. It would be difficult to maintain the population, and so every woman would be treasured for her child-bearing abilities. If 1 man hurt a woman, there would automatically be a lynch mob, motives ranging from trying to impress the abused woman to making an example of the offender to save other woman the pain to chlorinating the gene pool.
The only problem with this is that it wouldn't stop and might even encourage unethical male prostitution.

I was only teasing, since I don't see an efficient way to overcome the darker side of the human condition. I didn't mean to offend your other ideas. Blame it on too much "Carpathian" nonsense. Bad, bad Christine Feehan and her vampire romance. razz

It seems to work here, and in the Netherlands, though they do it better than us, because their Lady's of negiociable affection are given warrants of fitness.
Here, the law protects them, but outside the 'den' no one is doing quality control. The only real issue we have with it now, is the operations that open up near schools. Which I don't have a problem with, the kids don't know, because they're usually night operations. It's the parents packing a sad.

hmm... could you give us a more clear picture of how it works their, what kind of protections are afforded the Whores, what kind problem the near-school prostitution causes, etcetera?

In the netherlands, the way I understand it the near a school thing isn't an issue. They have a street of them in Amsterdam, where the prostitutes sit in thier windows, displaying thier COF's and look for customers. I'm told it's amusing watching the curtains close as the customers select their girl...of course a male told me that, so I'm not entirely sold on the idea.
As it's legalised I dare say they (like the ones here) have as much protection from harm as most other proffessions. For example rape is still rape, even if you're a prostitute. A person's profession shouldn't make them any less protected than the rest of us.
