Journal Entry In the aftermath of receiving her pin, Mitzi also is given a little help and advice from her oldest friend. Mitzi had always wondered what having a child might be like. Not having having, as in pregnancy, the process of having a child she wasn’t so interested in, just the having parts. Barely two hours into owning the pin, the egg, she had learned that it involved lots of buying. Mitzi sat obediently on the couch in the entertainment room as Fredrick paced around the entertainment system, barking little orders at the large screen as it displayed a wide range of baby products, muttering under his breath in Russian as he came across poorly-designed so-and-so things, nothing quite meeting his requirements of ‘good enough’. It was all terribly amusing to the woman, she had never thought that Fredrick would know anything about taking care of children, to her knowledge he didn’t have any children and had not even been married.
“I never knew you could take care of children, or at least know what to look for with childcare.” The blonde said lightly, breaking her amused silence.
The man paused, looking over his shoulder, looking very dignified and serious even as he said: “Years of practice, my lady, have taught me what to look for.”
Mitzi could not help a light laugh in reply, just barely picking up at a hint of a smile on the older man’s face before he turned back to the screen. Yes, she supposed their relationship was a lot more like a nanny and a child than a butler and his mistress. He continued to flip though the catalogues with little twitches of his fingers in the air, barely inches from the screen, sensors picking up the motions and flipping through the digital pages rapidly.
“You know Fredrik, I’m not so sure the, ah, the prince will have a ‘baby’ age, at least not one that’s like a human’s.” Mitzi informed him, the man just opening and starting to browse a catalogue of cribs. She lifted her hand, lithe fingers absently running along the delicate, beautiful purple frog’s hand that cradled the egg resting above her heart. It was hard to believe that a prince- a child would come from such a humble piece of jewelry. She couldn’t help but look down at it fondly, she seemed to be incapable of resisting the urge to every few minutes, Mitzi’s toes curled inside of her heels, a bright smile spreading across her face as the excitement cropped back up.
“I see. What age should we be looking for then, my lady?” The old butler replied, taking a step back from he screen, not seeming annoyed in the least for having spent the past half hour looking at items for the entirely wrong age group.
A fire sprung into Mitzi’s lively eyes, the woman working her heels off before practically jumping up off of the couch, skirts ruffling around her as she moved to stand next to Fredrik, enjoying the feel of her stocking-clad feet on the clean carpet. “No younger than five, I believe.” She lifted her hand the second Fredrik changed the catalogues, fingers dancing an inch from the screen as she indicated that she only wanted items that came in colors in the purple to blue range to show up. “Madame X told me that I will need to go to Rheinfels the moment I see the egg start cracking, and that the prince will be a tadpole in a jar until they hit a growth and rapidly get… bigger.” She turned, flashing the older man an unsure smile. “I’m not sure I understand exactly… but I have the number to call Rheinfels if I need to know more…”
Fredrik didn’t smile that often, and when he did it was only just barely, the emotion coming more through his eyes than any movement of his lips. He placed a hand on Mitzi’s shoulder, “Do not worry, ma’am. I do not think that this will be so difficult. The food range seems simple enough. We just need some furniture to start off with, a bed, dresser, some supplies, gentler cleaning soaps for children, and as the young master grows we will be able to get what we needs as he needs it.”
The woman was ridiculously grateful for Fredrick, making everything seem so easy, so simple when he presented it straightforward. He had been a blessing when the Motherland had set him up as her butler, the woman was too scattered to keep herself well, and the Motherland needed her in good care if they were to get their spy equipment. Fredrick was an excellent butler in all the ways he should be, just the right amount of professional distance and caring advice. The man turned back to the screen, easily flipping through the pages. He stopped at a child’s bed, finger tapping the air lightly as he selected it.
Mitzi could immediately see why he picked it. The frame was dainty, as far as beds went, detailed in carved swirls, matching her house’s dollhouse charms. The bed was white with red accents, and of course coming with the necessary software to install into the house’s computer to be able to change the accent color on whim. Her hand joined Fredriks, selecting a soft, powdery blue to take the place of the red. Mitzi and her butler stepped back, allowing the screen to project a life-sized hologram of the selected bed. The woman put her hands on her hips, bending over to examine the enlarged molding work, smile splitting her face as she found it satisfactory.
“Yes, I like this one very much.” She informed her butler, “I don’t know how fast he will grow, so lets only go with the half set. The bed, dresser, endtable, and desk.” What if he grew quickly and never really needed the wardrobe, bookshelf, and entertainment center?
Fredrik nodded in agreement, “Very wise, ma’am, and where would you like to plan to place them?” He asked, turning back to the screen to add the dresser and table to the set.
Now that was a good question. Mitzi hummed lightly, looking down at the pin on her chest. Keep him close, she had been told. She didn’t need to have been told that though, her instincts to mother and completely spoil rotten already setting in hard and fast. Keeping him close in the pin and tadpole stage, she had been told, was very necessary, but as a princeling? The prince would be like a child then, able to get around on his own, and the subject of needing to be around him hadn’t been brought up. Mitzi smiled as she looked up. She would keep him close, all the same, at least for a while once he was out of the jar, if nothing else so that the child-to-be and Mitzi herself would not become lonely at a sudden separation.
“My room, Fredrik. When the contractor arrives for the Daycare I’ll talk to him about renovating a room for him.” She declared, nodding lightly in agreement with her own plan.
“Very well, ma’am. Shall I arrange for matching linens for your own bed?” Good Fredrik, always anticipating what his mistress would need with nothing but his normal dour humor.
“Yes, please, and for my furniture accents to shift to a complementing blue. Something darker would be good.” Mitzi responded, moving back to the screen. Now that one thing had been resolved, one little issue out of the way, it was so much easier continue planning with confidence, “We won’t have to worry about food for a while, not until he is a tadpole, and even then all we will need is lettuce or cabbage.” She waved her hand at the screen several times, reaching her house computer. Mitzi spoke her name and held up her hand, the scanners giving a pleasant little beep as she was allowed access. Slender fingers moved around the interface, trying to get to the food orders, brow furrowing as the page only seemed to want to show what to order next week when she wanted to find a month from now. She let out a little huff as it jumped to next week again, but now a year in the future.
It was a credit to Fredrik’s good training that he didn’t chuckle, stepping up, “May I, ma’am?” He asked politely before taking over use of the computer. He was, after all, much more familiar with the servant aspects of the program. “What do you need?”
“I’d like to start ordering another head of lettuce a week starting a month from now.” She informed him, manicured hands landing on her hips as she stepped back. The computer always did like Fredrik best, only a few waggles of his fingers changing the order settings easy-as-you-please. Mitzi couldn’t help but smile, she honestly had no idea what she would do without the older man in her life. “And as for the soaps- well I think we should wait for that as well. Keep your eye out for something that is for very delicate skin.”
Fredrik looked over to his mistress, “More delicate than what we acquire for you, ma’am?”
Mitzi nodded in response, “I should think so, from what I understood when playing with Brodi and talking with Madame X.”
“I understand ma’am, and I shall be on the lookout for such a product.” He nodded his head lightly before glancing back at the screen, “I do not think we need anything else, unless you can think of anything more?”
Anything more? The woman turned, humming lightly and waving her hand until the catalogues came back up. Mitzi gave the different titles a contemplative look, shapely brows furrowed lightly, finally settling for one on fabrics. So many patterns, so many colors, so many fabrics. She needed something perfect though.
“Ma’am?” Fredrik asked quietly, watching as she flipped though the pages, wondering if she was looking for new linens herself.
“You know, Fredrik, when my mother was pregnant with me she made a quilt?” Mitzi said softly, a pattern catching her eye. She lightly tapped on it, screen filling with white, cute, delicately drawn green outlines of frogs jumping across the white background. A few waves and the frog colors changed to a light purple.
“No, I did not.” He replied, content to watch as Mitzi began zipping through the pages to find complementing patterns.
“I’m not much of a seamstress, but I could reprogram one of my machines to do the job.” Mitzi’s eyes lit as she found the last pattern, ordering the batch and at least twice as much yardage than she thought she would actually need.
“It is a wonderful sentiment, ma’am.” Fredrik said, dour as ever with the exception of a fond little sparkle to his old eyes.
“Thank you.” Mitzi replied, returning his look with a warm smile and sincere eyes. It was not just gratitude for the compliment, but for him being here and being rational when she wasn’t sure she could be herself. That he was a grounding force, solid and practical and knowledgeable in all the ways Mitzi couldn’t be herself. Mitzi had a feeling he received the sentiment, even as he turned away and headed back to his normal duties.
Manor Neidlich finally settled back into normalcy after the excitement of the day, servants at their chores and mistress up in her workshop, tinkering and imagining a child of her own playing with the toys she made.

Journal Entry Mitzi Wulf is the very definition of an overprotective mother-to-be. Nasikabatrachus sahyadrensis was really a frog quite like no other. When the picture had first appeared on her screen Mitzi had stared silently for a moment before slender fingers tapped at the tabletop, information from the pad she was reading from transferring to the worktable. In a few moments the hologram loaded, the purple frog sitting on her desktop easy-as-you-please. Before Brodi’s unexpected visit she had not given frogs so much as a second look, being all slimy and mucousy and dirty and not at all conforming to the normal parameters of ‘cute’ that the woman preferred to indulge in. Here sitting in her workroom, though, she had to admit that nasikabatrachus sahyadrensis was adorable, even if a bit of a mouthful.
The woman looked down at her chest, the egg sitting over her heart, pinned to her cream dress. She had owned the pin for all of one week and had never left it out of her sight for longer than eight minutes. Mitzi slept with pillows piled around her like a wall, the fretting woman worried about turning over in her sleep and crushing the delicate pin, especially since she normally slept on her stomach and never her back. That alone had made her first night with the pin difficult, the woman waking up every hour as her disturbed unconscious pulled at her nerves. The morning after that night had been filled with a lot of coffee as the exhausted woman sat slumped over at her worktable. Fredrik had smiled at the sight every time he brought a fresh pot.
The first thing she made that second day of owning the pin was a covering. The design had been simple enough, a small shallow dome, a shield, to go over her chest. The entire thing was made of a extraordinarily durable but lightweight plastic and covered the left side of her chest and wrapped around her side, stopping just under the breast, form fitting with exception of the shallow dome over her heart, a space to cradle the skin against her skin. Mitzi normally only wore the barest of safety equipment when working her tools, eye protection and thick gloves, but the idea of the pin slipping from her chest as she supervised a metal press or saw was enough to make her wince and curl in on herself, slender hand covering the pin protectively as she willed the horrible image out of her mind. That eight minuets when she had left the pin out of her sight was the time it took for her to send the holographic design from her worktable to the machines. Mitzi having her butler stand outside holding the pin the workroom door holding the pin as the machines mixed the plastic and pressed it into the desired shape. Nothing went out of place, no wild sparks or volatile discharge of molten-hot plastic, but all the same she did not feel silly for the caution. The covering would be strapped on underneath her clothing while she worked, the dome padded lightly to keep the egg it from being shaken.
Mitzi took the order to keep the pin close very seriously. Keeping it over her heart while she slept, while she worked, even when she had to bathe it was placed on the counter- in plain sight from the bathtub, sitting on the otherwise sadly neglected blue satin pillow she bought just for the egg. It hadn’t even crossed her might that she might be going a little overboard with the whole thing, even when she started keeping the protector on after work simply because she enjoyed the feel of the pin against her skin. Not that she wore it that way all the time, the plastic did become uncomfortable after a while, and she worried about stifling the pin even though she had a delicate but powerful ventilation system built into the very plastic itself to keep the dome receiving fresh air.
The woman snapped out of her revere, looking at where her fingers had moved without her knowing, fingertips passing through the hologram. Mitzi pulled a tight smile as she retracted her hand. She would have a real purple frog to pet soon enough, as far as her prince would be a real nasikabatrachus sahyadrensis that is. Her smile softened as she looked back down to her pad, fingertip scrolling down as she read, glad that she had so much preparation to do to keep her mind off of the excruciating wait. Her plans to turn the private entertainment room on the top floor into a bedroom had been scrapped, learning that her frog, the nasikabatrachus sahyadrensis was a burrowing one. Mitzi settled on building an entirely new room under the manor, opposite of her private lab, figuring he would be far more comfortable there even if he would be on the entirely opposite side of the manor from her. Her hand lifted, lightly resting over the pin at the thought.
Well. It would be a while before he was old enough to go and be away for that long by himself. For now she had him all to herself, close as can be, even if he wasn’t consciously aware of it.
