Working At Home

It truly was a strange sort of flower he thought to himself more then once after he'd brought it home with him. It seemed not to wither in the least even though all it did was just sit there on the floor of his work space with him. He'd expected that it would dry out and proceed to wilt before he'd even be able to finish up the initial sketches of it given that the one that gifted him with the flower said it didn't need water. Much to his surprise and delight though it hadn't been like that, it remained just as it was when he'd first seen it despite the amount of time that had passed.

He had many sketches of various different angles of the flower drawn by now and had even started with a slow, initial test run of using the sketches to create a piece. It was a complicated flower and the work was slow and tedious but worth it if what he made looked half as beautiful as the flower itself. Something he felt that even with all of his skill that it would be a pale comparison. It wouldn't be a piece that he would sell that much was for certain but it might look alright as something to spruce up other parts of his home. Since he'd lost his beloved wife he hadn't really bothered with keeping up appearances about much of anything. Not that he'd worried about them before, all that mattered to him was his wife and not the people around him or the rumors that swirled about the two of them.

Jing Lin gave a little groan, rolling his shoulder before he lifted his gaze to glance over toward the flower for a moment to watch it. It seemed to glow with a light of its own, perhaps it was something to do with the breed of flower? It was the only thing that really made sense to the sculptor. He pushed himself to his feet, stretched out, then went to fetch a piece of white jade. It was a small piece left over from when he'd done a much bigger project some time ago. He had a few pieces left over and now he'd found a reason to use the piece. It was a slow going process but if it make out looking half as good as the flower itself he would be happy.

It was likely to be another sleepless night but then again most nights were like that, it was easiest for him to spend his time working, it filled his time, it forced his mind to concentrate, and he didn't think on the past. Sleeping was the worst problem he had, it was the last thing that he really wanted to do was it was the face of his sweet wife that he always dreamed of and when he awoke alone and ended up depressed all over again. It was just easiest to work until he dozed off, that way it was a deep and dreamless sleep as his body eased itself of the strain and stresses of being pushed to hard.

The man's hand moved slowly and with purpose, to draw out the shape that the jade wanted to become. He was starting to see the beginnings of the fist petal when his vision started to waver, his eyes fluttering closed before opening blearily then closing once more. It came over him slowly, the need to sleep, to rest, the day had been more exciting then he was used to. It wasn't to long before he dozing, snoring lightly, and the white jade fell down to land safely on his lap. It remained resting there, the flower it was based on in front of him and the sketches he'd done to either side, surrounding him and for once it wasn't his late wife that he dreamed of. Instead it was of strange flowers that smelled of plum blossoms.

A Blossoming Flower

It looked like a flower now, it wasn't perfect and it was far from done but it was taking shape in a way that made Jing Lin actually smile just a little. It wasn't something that he did often, at least in public, because people trusted him that much less when he smiling. He found their suspicious odd but more so that they still came to him for what he made, then again with his steady hands and countless years of training he was one of the best in the area. It was the nature of people, nothing more, to fear what they didn't understand. He didn't quite see why the fox spirits were so feared, one of their groups perhaps sounded a little dangerous, the ones called nogitsune, far above the others. It might just be the fact that they weren't human and as such not easily understood as other humans were... not that humans were crystal clear. One could trust a human about as far as they could throw them in most aspects of life.

A little yawn came from Jing Lin and he lifted his arms up to stretch them out over his head, popping things into place, then gave a purring sound as he felt a bit better now that everything was back to where it belonged. He glanced down at the flower in his hand, over to the one that it was modeled after, then pushed up to his feet. He needed something to eat he thought to himself, a drink, and perhaps some rest before he continued on with his work as the next part was all precise details and he didn't want to risk this piece or all of the time that he'd put into it.

The piece was placed down carefully and he started to the door of his work room when a small flickering of light caught his attention. He turned slowly to follow the progress of what looked a bit like a firefly but... that didn't make much sense given the current weather that they were having. He watched the manner it which it flickered and then started to circle around the flower. It was an odd sight to behold, both the insects and the flower really shouldn't be alive right now. The flower was something that was growing despite not having proper care, food, water, or even sunlight... and those bugs seemed to be shimmering light but nothing more then that. He couldn't see the but it was apart of.

It was alone. The thought struck him as he watched the way that other lights seemed to join in with the first one, dancing around the white lotus with the golden tips in a manner that seemed almost reverent. He forgot all about his food as he turned his attention to it the flower instead, stepping closer, then sank down next to the flower to watch the way that it seemed to shiver and shake, the petals got larger, and it seemed to slowly being blooming wider, opening up to reveal the center of it. There was another shimmer s the lights seemed to gather toward the middle and the scent of plums seemed to fill the air around the flower, smelling like the incense that he'd been burning recently while he was carving the jade lotus.

He leaned in closer when the bright ligt seemed to grow forth from the center, looking a bit like an egg for a moment. The sculptor reached a hand out to brush it over the egg of light and watched as it opened up as though it were made of a flower as well to reveal a child curled up in it. There was a moment where it all felt so very unreal before the child gave a small twitch and eyes that seemed almost to shimmer for a moment slid open to gaze up at Jing Lin in a slight daze before the little one's lips turned up into a smile.

It was... a miracle he thought to himself, a child gifted to him from the one he'd met in the Pharmacy. He lifted a hand up, reaching out to brush back the little one's hair before he gathered the child into arms, "Come on, we should find you something warn to wear." He murmured, shrugging out of the top layer of the robes he was wearing and wrapped it around the child, rising to his feet with the little one in his hold. He would need to find this child a name, clothing, something to eat, to drink, all the things a child needed. He had a moment of thought about what people would think when the 'fox' sudden appear with a child in his company. Likely that he had a pup... Jing Lin could only hope that they weren't to tough on the child he thought to himself as he headed out of his work room.

Bai Mei was given the surprise of his life this day, he was doing as he normally did in the way that he normally did it. He was taking care of things around the house for his ever busy father. He made food for him, cleaned up the house, would wrap a blanket around the man when he fell asleep while he was carving. Anything that was needed to make things go smoother for the man even if it meant getting the broom to chase neighborhood kids off the porch when they came around trying to get a look at the 'fox spirits' that lived here. Why they thought such thing was beyond him... they were a normal enough family after all so why did they insist upon bother them?

When there was a knock at the door he was expecting just that, it was why he fetched his broom to approach the door cautiously. He peeked out and... saw a smiling face instead of someone starring at him in that usual manner that they would, "Umm... Hello?" He said, opening the door a bit more and set the broom aside for the moment when it would appear that he wasn't going to need to use it against what looked a bit like a delivery man, "Did my father order something from you?" It would be the first that Bai Mei had heard of it but that meant nothing since his father didn't always tell him everything.

The man shook his head, "No. I am looking for someone named Bai Mei." He said, "I was told this was where he lived."

Bai Mei blinked, looking more then a little uncertain before saying, "I... I am Bai Mei." He said, waiting to see what happened but instead of something bad the man held out a cloth wrapped item to him, "Huh?"

"I would suggest being very careful with this, take good care of it, and one day it may hatch into the pet of your dreams!" The man said, gave a bow, and then headed on his way.

Bai Mei was confused as he looked down at the bundled, shrugged, and headed inside closing and locking the door after himself. He took a few steps forward before he settled down on the ground, placing the bundle in his lap and carefully unwrapped it. There was a note enclosed that spoke of the Dragon Boat Festival that he'd gone to, that he was the one had been able to balance the most eggs during the many games that he'd played, and that this egg was his prize.

Needless to say the yellow eyed boy was in complete and total shock as he looked over what had to be the most beautiful egg that he'd ever seen. It was so pretty and warm to the touch, and he couldn't help but to gently snuggle it to his chest, listening to it as though seeking out any sounds within. He'd been told that when an egg was close to hatching you could hear the little animal inside moving around... but as this one was silent he figured it must be a ways off from hatching.

"Don't worry little egg, I will take good care of you." He said, eyes sinking closed as he hugged the item in a careful and affection manner. He wasn't sure why but he was certain this was the first time he'd ever had something like this to take care of, ever. As such he wanted nothing more then to do very well by the pretty egg.
