The washroom was empty. Drem cursed silently as he realized Balar's deception. That b*****d had left the tavern and deserted Eldrin! Drem made a silent vow that he would make Balar pay. But first, he had to find him.

Of course there were thoughts running through his head, trying to convince him that Balar may be a good man, that he may have a logical excuse for lying. But Drem ignored them, his bias got the best of him and he decided that Balar would be a poor suitor for his sister.

There was an open window, perfect for a quick escape. Balar must have left through that. Drem quickly slipped through the opening with his bow drawn, intent on finding the man.

It was over rather quickly. No sooner had Drem slipped out of the window was he attacked by an unknown assailant. Unknown in that Drem hadn't seen who it was, but he knew it had to have been Balor. He heard the scrape of metal across the ground, and had less than a couple seconds to draw his dagger and defend himself from the longsword that whipped past his head. He ducked down and charged, embedding the metal blade into the assailant's stomach. Quickly and without a pause, he withdrew it and stabbed again, this time striking the man's chest. Drem leapt back and watched as Balor's body hit the ground, his blood already seeping into the cracks of the ground.

"What have you done?!" Eldrin's screams pierced the air, making Drem wheel around, a terrified expression on his face.

"I-He attacked me! I defended myself!" He cried, his blood soaked daggers dropping to the ground. "I... I don't know what to say."

"Are you hurt?"

"What?" His sister's question shocked him. He expected her to scream at him, to tell him she hated him.

"Are you hurt, Drem? Please, answer my question," Eldrin pleaded, tears welling in her eyes.

"No, I am not. Eldrin, I'm sorry."

"Go," her voice was unnervingly calm.

"What? I-"

"Go!" She yelled, causing Drem to turn and flee into the night, scared out of his whits.

Arcane Student

"Again." The word held so much power, and to think it was the eighth time she heard it that day. The bolt of lightening crashed down, engulfing the wooden training dummy in a flash of light. "Again." Another crash of lightening, this one missed it by mere inches."Again."

She wore black leather pants and a tight black shirt, its sleeves pushed up. Her hands were bare, save for the black tattoo of a snake which, well, snaked its way from her forefinger to her elbow. Her black hair was tied back in a bun, save for the occasional strand of hair dropping into her face. Her strangely purple eyes showed her determination.

"Again." Her hands crackled with electricity. She stepped forward, flinging up her right hand. Lightening burst upward, then crashed down on the dummy. She smirked contently as it burst into flames.

Ziathan opened her mouth to say complain, but Christopher, her elderly teacher, cut her off. "Now, do it again, Ziathan. This time, with fire."

Ziathan sighed heavily as she called upon her magic. The fire ripped down her arms, and burst forth when she held them out in front of her. The jet of flame hit the dummy, acrid black smoke billowed in the air. "Oh now you've made me do it. They'll surely know of my display now, Old Man."

"Focus!" Christopher hissed, but it was too late. Ziathan's fire had bloomed into an inferno. The teenage mage gritted her teeth as she withdrew the fire, spinning it into an orb which floated above her palm.

"Sorry," she apologized, dispersing the fire into the air.

"Do not apologize, Ziathan. Do not do it again."

Christopher rubbed his wrinkled face. "Ziathan, you have done good today," he said. "Save for the inferno, and the demolished dummy."

"I'd just like to point out that you told me to do it," Ziathan rolled her eyes as she left the clearing. "I'm hitting the pub. You want to come?"

"No, child, I do not. Alcohol disagrees with me. Enjoy your drinking, lass." He leaned on this long cane as he watched her leave with his dull blue eyes. The years hadn't been kind to the old sage. His friends have long passed away, his magic had faded. Only his wisdom remained.

Ziathan entered the town, her dark red cloak flapping in the subtle breeze. Everyone here was wary of magic, with good reason. About fifteen years ago, there was a colossal discharge of magic that obliterated the buildings and killed several villagers. It was a miracle that so many survived.

The pub was one of the larger ones this close to the coastline. It was made of old timber, its color long faded by the mist that rolled off of the ocean. The doors squealed when she pushed them open, but the inhabitants payed no attention. They were drinking the usual brew, the amber liquid bubbled wildly. Ziathan sat a the bar and ordered a pint.

The ale tasted of horseradish mixed with cheddar cheese. Ziathan promptly spat it back into the glass and made a disgusted face. "Uh, terrible," she complained, passing the glass back to the bartender. Behind her, the door opened and in came two men. More sheep for the shepherd, it seems.
