I personally believe this is nonsense. Throughout history there have been several times that human being thought the world would come to an end. The same belief of the end of times was circulating in the year 1000; I can't see the year 2012 being much different.

my understanding of it was that the mayans didnt even predict the world ending, but that the calendar just ends so... It means nothing and will have about as much impact on my life as y2k

Yes! This is one reason as to why Danish vikings were able to re-invade in 1004. The Saxons in England felt that the Vikings were God's punishment at the end of the thousand years that he gave them after Jesus' death, so only the more politically- and not-getting-hacked-limb-from-limb-minded Saxons tried to fight them. Hence why the Norse swept across England leaving only the kingdom of Wessex standing xp

So maybe 2012 is when the Chinese will sweep across North America?

Your reasoning makes little sense. First off, 1004 would not be a thousand years after Jesus' death. It's commonly accepted that the year 0 or 1 AD is his birth year, but it's definitely not his death year.

Also, how would a Mayan prediction mean the Chinese were attacking? If going with the pattern of your example, it would mean the Mayans are attacking.

Obviously it wasn't exactly a thousand years, or it would have been 1033. I mean a thousand years in a round-about way, but I should have specified this.

First off, the Mayans are DEAD. 0.4% of the MAyan population remains alive today, and that's a pretty liberal stat. Who the ******** said anything about MAyans attacking? The parallel there assumes that VIkings were Romans.

Xion- sexy Marine in your siggy <3

Hero&Xion- it's all nonsense, and if it served any purpose historically/now, I believe it to have been irrelevant and coincidental. I doubt the Chinese would be the ones to attack us. I'd have pegged North Korea above all else, which makes me wonder why we're pissing away resources in the middle east.

2012 is full of fail. Go find some other ancient civilization to steal their 'apocalyptic' thoughts and make everyone panic after 2012 occurs.

I've come to see that tying yourself emotionally to land makes sense, but not the ideals that happen to come with the arbitrary human government set up on that land.

Seems like a semantics game to me. *shrugs* Most patriots I know are misguided nationalists who love their country folk, home town, family, and friends, not some mythical creature that would dive on a grenade for a bourgeoisie. Here I use nationalist = likes the land they come to know as home/would like to know as home.

Patriotism, if not the same as nationalism, is like a mythical creature or a case of insanity. I have seen no one profess this quality, and I served in the Marines... talk about brainwashed "patriots". If in the sense patriotism can be mean to an organization rather than a country/nation as a whole, then patriotism WOULD apply to the military, somewhat, as the peer pressure we should all strive for... but most didn't... like 90% just maintained who they were but were not patriotic. I only think this one 1/2 ratard man in Motor T's pool who could lift up a 7ton's engine with just his hands and hurl it, I think HE may have been patriotic... but it was more like batshit insane, extremely violent to authority, and a big cuddly bear... no, wait... never mind. XD

haha. No, there is an important innate difference between patriotism and nationalism. Even if members of either can be... undesirable friends.

Patriotism is apolitical. It's a love of where you came from and what you live in, it is not a basis for yoru politics, patriots can love immigration and hate it, they can reject marxist dialectic and love it. A patriot merely holds attachment to their homeland. I personally think it's natural, though I do not believe everyone is a patriot, I do not think it is abnormal or culturally instilled at all, I think most people will innately prefer what they know to what they do not, thus; a patriot.

A nationalist is political. They love their land, yes, but they want to bring it to the forefront of politics. The nation deserves taxes, the nation deserves an army. Serve your nation, etc. It is, at its lightest, etremist patriotism and at its heaviest, fascism. I do not believe that all patriots are nationalists. Though... Nationalists would mostly be patriots.
