*chuckles as I steeple my fingertips just below my lip* With over a hundred authors, the numerous movies, television shows, comics, animated series, and even songs that are based on vampires, there's no shortage of perspective to choose from. Thus far, my favorite interpretation of vampires is encapsulated in the writings of Anne Rice. Her novels not only capture the traditional folklore surrounding the living undead, but also gives each vampire different abilities that others may not possess. She also allows for vampires to become more powerful and gain abilities over time. Suggesting that: with experience comes power. She also dispels a lot of the nonsensical myths, such as vampires being repelled by crucifixes.
What turned me on to vampires? I don't recall any specific event or exposure to popular media that acted as a catalyst for me. I think it came more with my research of the paranormal and finding parallels between myself physically and vampire of lore. Pale complexion, sensitivity to sunlight, my nocturnal nature, my ability to commune with animals, mild psychic abilities, strength, reflexes, stealth, heightened audio and visual senses, nocturnal vision, empathy, and I've been told that my movement and gestures are very graceful and vampiric.
I'm very much an old school Goth. I was Gothic before I even knew what Gothic was. I've always been very comfortable in black and I have an affinity for Victorian and Colonial style clothing. I love things that most consider to be dark and macabre. From my taste in art to the pet Black Widow spider I once cared for.
