Harry Potter won't make it, it doesn't have the staying power. The reason it's still doing well at the moment because the films are still going on...

The reason I disagree is that this was written as 'children's literature,' but I am 27 years old, and I think that the majority of serious Harry Potter fans are my age or even older. I was an English major in college, and Harry was huge there. Fussy old professors would go off enthusiastically about how they stole the Harry Potter books from their grandkids to read. The series is 12 years old, and is not fading. The movies do generate interest in the books, but I think there is a huge divide, and that the movies will die while the books live on with their loyal readers. Besides that, people my age (teens when the first book arrived on the scene) will soon be passing it along to their kids, which I think will create a continuing boom.

I could see the Dark Tower series being considered a classic, but I still think that it will always be overshadowed by King's work as a whole. Some of his books are already pretty much considered classics.

Any *decent* childrens' literature will also be enjoyed be adults - but there's still a huge divide between decent literature and the stuff that lasts as classics. Some of my lecturers enthuse of Harry Potter too - one of my English/Classics lecturers recently wrote an article on it. I still don't think it's good enough to stand the test of time. As I said, the fat that it's not fading yet is not impressive, since they're still releasing material that keeps the franchise alive. Twelve years after the last film has been released, if it's still as strong then, THEN I'll start to reconsider whether it can last or not.

but then, I suppose do you consider the works of Enid Blyton classics?I can see Harry Potter achieving that sort of status of at least a while, but I doubt the next generation will enthuse over it as much as this generation did - they'll have new best sellers to enthuse over, and the generation after that will enthuse even less, I suspect.
