There are newer gods, gods of dreams and fear and madness, gods far stronger than you, intoned Fenrir.
The more Vlad thought about it, the more he remembered having thumbs, once upon a time. He looked down at his paws and thought very hard about how they ought to have been hands and that he ought to have been a human like the girl above him and that he had not always been a wolf.
The wolf began to change. Its snout shrank inward, its bones shifted, and its hair thinned. Ragged clothes appeared on its body, the remains of a jacket and shorts. In a matter of seconds, it was replaced by a rangy, feral young man.
Vlad looked at his hands again. Yes, these were familiar.
He looked at the fire escape.
And then he began to climb.

"EEP!" Kayla yelped as the wolf morphed into a scraggly man. The wild looking person then began to climb the fire escape, and Kayla really shrieked.
Calm down, and use your head, girl. Loki reprimanded her, momentarily distracted from his verbal sparring with Fenrir. You have powers, too, remember?
Kayla took a few deep breaths, realizing Loki was right, and willed herself invisible. She hoped it would still be effective on the wolf-man when he was a human. Would he be able to smell her now? She could fly away if he tried to attack... She wished she could fly away now, but Loki hadn't finished talking with his son, yet.
Watch your tongue, whelp. Loki sneered. You may have inherited your mother's unfortunate lack of wit, but I would think that even you would know when to avoid making enemies. Especially when it's me.

Oh, said Fenrir, accompanying it with a laugh that half sounded like a bark. I don't desire to be your enemy, father.
Vlad didn't know what the angry voice was talking about, he just kept climbing the fire escape. The girl had vanished, but he could still smell her. Yes, he could still smell her. His senses were only slightly less in this form.
He pulled himself up onto the roof and looked around. He couldn't localize the scent, but he knew she was here.
"Come and play, little red riding hood," he said, in a voice gone gravelly from disuse. His thoughts were more coherent now - the fur had been lifted.
No, father, said Fenrir. In time, you will join me.
Vlad thought he heard something. He lunged, clawed hands outstretched.

Kayla backed away from the wolf-man as he climbed onto the roof, eyes wide. The look in his eyes scared her. He knew she was here, but from the way his eyes searched the rooftop, he didn't know exactly where.
Then, he spoke, and Kayla decided she was much better off in the air. She jumped straight up, trying to get as high as possible. Good thing, too, for the wolf-man leaped at where she'd been standing a split-second later. Kayla yelped as she felt the wind of his passing, and flew higher. Now several yards above the rooftop, she stopped and looked down in fear, hands covering her mouth to prevent herself from making another sound.
Loki was silent. He was still close enough to communicate with Fenrir, but he said nothing. It was an almost melancholy silence.
We're leaving. He said to Kayla, after a moment. She was all too happy to obey, flying quickly up and away from the rooftop.

Vlad tumbled to the ground, somersaulted twice, and skidded to a halt. He had hit only air, no soft little girl! He growled and tried to smell for her, but the wind had picked up and he could no longer smell her. Growling, he got to his feet and limped towards the fire escape. He would have her - he would have her flesh and her bones and her blood.
He would have every inch of her. It was beyond doubt.
He returned to his wolfish form as he trotted out of the alley. It was only a matter of time.
We will take you down, Father, declared Fenrir. He did not know where Loki had gone to, but it was certain that the fight was on.
