And then it all fell apart.
He knew this was a bad idea! He knew he should have told Writ that the alleys were safer! Why didn't he listen to his gut? At some point during the chaos, Faylen slipped out of Writ's grasp and hit the tar. He pushed himself upright and took off full-tilt after the bigger godling. At least he had some powers, push come to shove. Faylen had nothing. Not even the name of his god. Just gender and some possible domains. He was helpless here.
But...Blacksuits wouldn't shoot them just for trying to fight their way through a blockade, right? They'd just taze them as best and haul them to jail, right? The sound of gunshot ringing out seemed to defy this thought. It was entirely likely they'd just shot a warning shot into the air to part the crowd but it made things no less frightening for the poor boy.
He'd never gotten this in trouble. Faylen was a good boy. He followed the rules at home and school. He kept his head down and was polite. He had never even gotten detention. Thus, getting in trouble with the law (or an extension of it, anyways) was a major shock for him. He didn't know how to handle it! He was flat-out terrified and he burst into tears as he stumbled along. "Vriiiit!" he bawled, trying to follow his figure through tear-blurred eyes.

"Sorry kid, today just ain't my-" Writ looked down to see his empty arms. A bullet zinged past his face. He stopped for a split second to stare at the blasted hole in the building next to him. His eyes went wide.
This really really wasn't his day.
He ran back to grab a traumatized Faylen. The Blacksuits got closer, they stopped shooting, but they were close and their guns were all pointed at the two of them.
"Those were warning shots." One of the suits called out, "Next time we won't miss."
Writ glared. He- They needed to get out of here. So much for being inconspicuous. The plan that he had in mind was pretty much tossed out of the window at this point. He pulled the kid into an alleyway and hoisted him up on the fire escape,
"Just get up on the roof and lay low for a while. Quinn's place should be around here, just crash at his place, alright? I'd come along, but someone's gotta give these guys a run!" Writ ran down the alleyway and out of sight.

He felt someone grab him and when he realized that someone wasn't wearing a black suit, he hung on for dear life, stumbling and tripping along in a desperate attempt to escape. He had a very strong grip for a little boy, it seemed. If he squeezed a bit harder, it may have been painful. Fay tried to rub his eyes so he could at least see where they were going but it seemed that everytime he cleared his vision, his eyes would tear up again, obscuring his vision.
Fay scrambled onto the fire escape without hesitation when he was helped, scrubbing at his tear-stained face once more, "Mr. Vrit..." he whimpered.
He watched the other man run off. He was almost going to plead with him not to go, not to leave him like this. He was scared, so, so, scared and he didn't want to be alone. But...but someone needed to get the Blacksuits to go away. Once they took chase, Fay clambered up the escape until he sat on the roof.
The boy laid there for some time, perfectly still and silent, hoping that no one came up...he'd have nowhere to run if they did and he wasn't brave enough to do building-jumping just yet. It was hot, laying exposed in the summer sun and it made the boy's stomach do flip-flops. Or maybe that was just the anxiety.
Finally, when he was sure things had settled down enough, he pushed himself upright and crawled the edge of the building. He peeked over cautiously. It would seem that the line had reformed and the Blacksuits (or a different pair; he wasn't sure) he appeared at the head to check people through. If he was careful, he could probably sneak back down without being noticed.
Carefully, the boy moved down the fire escapes, willing them not to creak too much. Only when he was back on solid ground did he heave a sigh of relief. He started back down the alleyways, hoping he didn't pop out near another Blockade.
He thought for a moment about wandering around until he found Mr. Quinn's house (it wasn't only Mr. Writ that had offered the place up- Quinn himself had told the boy to come to him if he ever needed it) but...no, he didn't want to be a bother. He still had to pay him back for dinner. Instead...he had other plans. He still had to find the library! He just hoped Mr. Writ would be okay. Even if this was technically all his fault...he was a nice man. He hoped he'd be okay.
He'd rather like to see the man again someday.
