Omerzen had visited a few eggs now, and he made sure he gave each plenty of attention. He was sure that he would impress, but it couldn't hurt to be safe, and if touching eggs increased his chances, by Faranth, he would do it. He wasn't sure what he would impress - frankly, he was fine with anything, although the thought of the power and prestige that came along with impressing a higher rank was tantalizing. Still, he wouldn't mind a humble blue, or even a green. He glanced up to where Meek had perched and was now staring down at him, and he smiled. Yes, he was quite fond of greens.

He had just finished examining another egg and straightened up to move on when another candidate abruptly crashed into him. The Bitran stumbled and nearly fell to the ground, but managed to keep his balance. Still, the damage had been done. Once he regained his composure, he whirled around on the other, glaring. "Why don't you watch where you're going!" he snapped.

Just then there was a high pitched shriek and Meek swooped down from above and landed on Omerzen's shoulder. She crouched down as if she were about to pounce and flared her wings threateningly, hissing at the candidate.

Zafir's first instinct, upon meeting the ground very suddenly, was to begin apologizing profusely. Before he'd even stood again, however, he was being verbally accosted by whoever he'd just crashed into. For a brief second, there was a tremor of fear in his gullet. He had, without a doubt, chosen the largest of all the candidates to trip against. Still, he kept his features carefully schooled.

"I am sorry. It was, after all, my fault. But, I do think you could wait until I was at least standing again before shrieking like that." He had prepared to say, until a high pitched noise cut him off. There, giving the Bitran that much more of a frightening appearance, was a clearly enraged flitt.

Any other comebacks Zafir would have come up with were strangled out of him, as a pair of bronze tails wrapped around his throat, and the matching heads of Cor and Serrin craned out before him, eyes whirling red with anger. It took a moment for him to realize Kalt was not present in her usual perch atop his skull, instead swooping in tight circles around her green adversary. Finally, though the appearance of the fire lizards had only taken brief seconds, Zafir managed to find words.

"I will watch my step, when you learn to watch your tongue. What should've been an accident not worth fretting over has now upset my fair." Zafir had rarely needed to use his reprimanding-voice before. Usually, he reserved it for particularly ill behaved children wreaking havoc aboard a ship, rather than tying nets like they should have been. He suspected it would be rather less successful on the green lizard's partner, though.

Sevina turned to the sound of a loud voice. It was a pair of the male candidates. Rolling her eyes she walked near them. Sev'en hissing at the loud noises the other firelizards where making. "Hush little sister" Sevina whispered to the tiny gold.

"Testosterone is flying around here like kelp on the sea." Sevina said loud enough that it would carry to the other candidates, mainly the two who were having words at eachother. Her Blue -green eyes sparkled at the sight the pair made, with there angry flitters. "I would hope, unless you wish to have the whole fair of everyones lizards in a fit, and upset our faithful DragonQueen, we could call this matter an accident and leave it at that?" Sevina asked as she shooed her two wily brown's away from her garb.

She wasnt wearing quite enough leather to accommodate all three lizards. It was bad enough Sev'en was on bare skin.

==========================

Sev'en hissed at her browns again. Making sure they knew who they belonged to. She then hissed at the noise the other flitters where making. It was all very annoying and didnt anyone know she was hungery?

Two bodies floated through the cavern, listening closely to the instructor. Otherwise they bathed in each others company. It was uncertain why they were so keen on staying away from the other candidates. Jealousy? Hatred? No, though one was much more out going than the other the two were horribly shy. Neither one could look another candidate (or rider) in the eyes without feeling that somehow their character was being judged. At least with blood there was love.

Rylie was the first one out of the two to touch a dragon egg. He had been eyeing one all day, inching closer though they had first been warned against touching them. Then suddenly he was crouching painfully next to one before he pressed a tanned ear against it. His hazel eyes closed as a smile crept on his lips. Then he wrapped his arms around it, using it as a sort of chin rest. All the same, he held it gently in his arms. "I can't hear anything through the shell," he remarked. "But Rita! It's so warm!" He rocked awkwardly on his feet, trying to get the searing heat away from his poor feet. Even with shoes it was hard to bear.

The sister looked quietly at her brother before she put her hands on the hardened shell of the dragon's egg. Her eyes burned to life, glittering happily. Her lips broke into a large smile and she made a quiet sound of pure joy. "You're right Rylie! It's not as unpleasant as this sand though. This is life. This is different." She slowly traced her finger along the shell, before she grinned broadly. "Let's go touch another!"

"How about you touch the queen's egg?" Rylie asked slyly. "Might as well?"

Rita quickly shook her head and crouched deeper into the sand. "I'm too terrified for that! I like these ones quite nicely. There's no reason I should go touching that one. She wouldn't like me much anyway." She sighed wearily. "You're certain to impress a really beautiful dragon. A brown at least I think. You're very strong Rylie."

"Not really!" the brother answered. Some other candidates were making a bit of noise, and he frowned. For the most part, he tried to ignore it. "I think that perhaps I should only take my changes with the flitters. I have mighty at least. I'm sure I could impress another little one."

As if on cue, the little green Mighty landed on his shoulder and made a happy little sound. Her little mind was full of images of the other flitters and her little eyes danced around. She was so interested in all the other flitters, and less interested in the hot sand and dragon eggs. Rylie laughed. "Although I don't know if I could handle too Mighties!"

Omerzen arched his eyebrows, mildly surprised that the candidate actually seemed to be intimidated by him. Yes, he was tall, but rather thin. Regardless, it was pleasing to know that he could have such an affect on people and he couldn't help but smirk lightly.

That is, until two angry firelizards - both bronze - latched onto the boy, regarding him with whirling red eyes, while his queen began circling Meek. The tiny green squeaked once in agitation at the gold, but lowered her head submissively, if not reluctantly. Omerzen frowned and raised a hand to stroke the green and hopefully calm her down.

"There wouldn't have been an accident if you had just exercised a little more caution," he retorted, green eyes cold. As one of the women interjected, the Bitran glanced casually at her sideways, as if she were nothing to be taken seriously. However, he did reply, "For Mirth's sake, I will leave it at that." He looked up at the golden dragon's sickly form, then back at the other lad, gaze unfriendly. Would he push the matter, Omerzen wondered.

Lunara stood silently at the back of the candidates, observing as the rules had been changed suddenly by the brisk greenrider. She chuckled some and sighed, looking over to the old Queen and her prized golden egg. She longed to go and caress it... well.. caressing any of these eggs would be a marvel. After living in the Harperhall for some years, she hadn't realized just how much she had missed being able to watch a Hatching. Now she was to be a part of it. It was amazing, to say the least.

After all her silence, her little blue Isith lay asleep around her neck, comfortable under her mass of brunette curls. He had become bored of the mindless chatter of the other firelizards, and since the females took no interest in him, he found it useless to try and keep flirting. Lunara's greenish-blue eyes looked down at her little flitter and chuckled before she walked closer to the eggs. Might as well let her hands graze the others before she made her way to the Queen's golden egg.

She touched a few, a blue speckled one, a small greyish green one, a soft, leathery brown one... there were several that were so beautiful, they nearly outshone the golden one. The curly headed young woman didn't pay much attention to the other candidates, just to the eggs. She touched each one she passed, feeling them, wondering if any of them would choose her to Impress. Even a green would be a sight to behold.... she barely even considered the beautiful Gold queen to come.

Afterall, what queen would choose a girl who left weyr life for 10 years to try and be a simple journeyman? It was almost shameful to think that she had come crawling back to her former lifestyle, abandoning her life for a second time over. At least that was how Lunara saw it. She was not one to take failures lightly.

At all.

The brunette finally reached the golden egg and stood silently with the other girls, waiting. She wanted to touch it, but was afraid. Would too many girls touching the golden beauty confuse it? She bit her lip and swallowed, nervous.

As though the approach of the weyrbrat turned harper somehow eased her aching soul, Mirth's head Lifted from the ground on which it had rested for days, her dull grey eyes took on the vaguest echoes of green, ghosting around the edges of the wide orbs.

It was time.

The humming began with the queen, a low, dull and steady sound. It took only a minute, maybe less, for the note to be matched by the dragons closest by, and within another handful of moments, the edges of the cliffs nearest the eggs were suddenly filled with the multicolored bodies of Dovan's handful of dragons.

The note was still low, and there would be time yet for the candidates to return to their own personal rooms and caverns, to fetch their robes and shed their sandals before standing with the eggs.

Not enough time to waste, though, for already the keening hum of the dragons had begun lifting in pitch, rising slowly, steadily towards the whistling, piecing noise that would accompany the first crack of the earliest shell.

Sevina rolled her eyes at the two young men. "Boys." She murmured as she walked away. By her observations she was at least four turns older than anyone in the hatching grounds, sighing Sevina watched as the other girls made there way to the golden egg. She had already touched the warm shell, and patted the dying queens arm. Sevina's heart was heavy. Who will teach the new queen rider the ways? Sure with old Ramoth Lessa's bronze mate taught her the ropes. But who would now?

Sevina watched other candidates and then looked back at the old queen. Then with another glance at the gold egg Sevina pulled Sev'en into her arms. Holding the tiny gold to her chest she walked back to the first egg she touched. It was the silver and black veined egg. Its shell was so white that it seemed to glow in the light. Patting the egg one last time she walked twards the old queen. Slowly lowering to the stone near the queens arm.

Holding Sev'en she begain a soft and simple toon. It was the firelizard song.

The Fire Lizard Song
The little queen all golden
Flew hissing at the sea
Against each wave
Her clutch to save
She ventured bravely.

As she attacked the sea in rage
A holderman came nigh
Along the sand
Fishnet in hand
And saw the queen midsky.

He stared at her in wonder
For often he'd been told
That such as she
Could never be
Who hovered there, bright gold

He saw her plight and quickly
He looked up the cliff he faced
And saw a cave
Above the wave
In which her eggs he placed.

The little queen all golden
Upon his shoulder stood
Her eyes all blue
Glowed of her true
Undying gratitude.

=================================
Sev'en, Buck, and Harper landed in the soft sand near the old Queen and Sevina. Harper soon began to hum along. Buck, having no interest in singing turned his eyes to watch the green's and gold firelizards. Sev'en hummed a few notes, simply adding her sweet trill in sertain parts to make Harpers deeper hum a bit nicer.

===============================

Sevina didnt know if the old queen could even hear anylonger, but it felt good to sing to her. As an old master Sevina knew most all the sonnates and twitters. Being the now retired Benden Weyr's harper, she missed singing and playing instruments for the wyer.

((edit for the post I didnt see ^^^))

As soon as Sevina's song ended, she heard the hum. Suddenly her heart slammed, "Its time." She whispered. "Its time..." She suddenly murmered quite loud. Sevina then turned and hit the sands at a run. She needed to go change into her whites! And quick. Running down the stone steps to the main halls. It took her a near fifteen minutes to get to her rooms. Stripping as soon as the door was open she dropped her leather corsette and soft weyrhide undergarments she ran to the bowl of clean water.

Slowly spunging her body she washed the grit and dirt off her body. Then quickly braided her long red hair into a half knot. It was braided untill her neck where it was left to fall freely down her back. By this time Sev'en and the browns had reached her.

Sev'en was humming in a sweet happy note.

It wasnt long before Sevina was dressed in the white candidate gown, with the thin rope around her waist. "No shoes sister. I hope the sands dont get too hot today, and the whole of the hatcing doesnt last too long."

((Camping is intense. biggrin And welcome back!))

Hedria hadn't known eggs could vary so much in appearance and it delighted the young woman to go around and examine them. Every one seemed to be different. With each egg she approached she tried to guess what color would emerge from it on hatching day. Other questions were buzzing in her head as well. Did egg markings have to do anything with dragon color? When would the hatching be? How long would the hatching last?

Would she impress?

That was the one that always lingered somewhere in the back of her mind. That was the most important question, and it was the only one that Hedria could never find an answer to until the hatching was upon her. It was agonizing, almost; Hedria hated being uncertain about anything. With a wistful sigh, Hedria gazed at the egg her hand was currently resting upon, and once again that same burning question arose, along with feelings of doubt - feelings that she quickly pushed back, knowing that they would do nothing to help her. Stay confident she reminded herself sharply and stepped away from the egg.

She had made her way almost around the clutch now, and was near the queen egg. There was just that one to see, and then a handful after that. Eyeing the golden orb, and then warily at Mirth, the young woman approached with care. As sick as the old queen was, it would be unwise and terribly disrespectful to agitate her somehow.

For a moment, she stopped at stared at the large egg. Except for a pretty red-headed girl with three firelizards, no one had moved forward to touch it yet, though, there were certainly others obviously considering it. Hedria peered at the woman next to her with the blue lizard curled around her neck. She looked nervous. Hedria figured she was probably feeling just as jittery as she was, with good reason.

"I think we can go ahead and touch it," she said, sending a small smile to the other woman. "Well, as long as Mirth approves," she added hastily and glanced up at the brooding queen. For a fleeting moment Hedria wondered if it was foolish to encourage the other candidate, being competition and all, but she brushed the thought away as quickly as it had come. When it all came down to it, she was sure the queen would chose who was the most capable of leading, regardless of who had touched her egg.

"You go ahead," she murmured, partially out of courtesy, partially because she wasn't quite ready to approach it herself.

((Oooh, hatching started - just while I was about halfway through my post, haha. Anyways, this post is still set at the touching.
EDIT: Aw, crimeny, I missed Mini's post. Erm - i'll edit a bit.
EDIT (again): Oh, my bad. The touching is the same time as the hatching. Mkay. No longer confused. >_<))
PostPosted: Sat Jun 27, 2009 8:18 pm

((lol, thats ok, I had to edit a bit too... Im just going ahead and getting her dressed and back to the hatching grounds, that way I can wait for other posts and be able to respond and what naught))

Sevina turned and looked at her friends. "I will never leave you three. You mean more than anything to me. Please remember that. And please, stay out of the way." She told the FireLizards. Mainly looking at Buck. Harper was too lazy to be a problem, and Sev'en was a well trained little girl. Buck was the flighty one. He chirped and ducked his tiny brown head. Making Sevina chuckle and scoop him up into a hug.

Placing a kiss on the small head she set him on her bed. Then in a fit of nervousness she shivered. "Oh little sister. I cant beleave this is happing... Our old home almost seems a lifetime ago..." She whispered.

Sevina then took a deep breath and walked back twards the hatching grounds. On the way she slipped into the wild and savagely crazy kitchen and grabbed a large handfull of meat scraps. Running to an old hall she set the lizards on a table with seperate piles of meat. "Come to the hatching grounds when you are done." She whispered, pushing a picture of the grounds to the lizards.

A mouthy chirp from Sev'en satisfied Sevina. She left them to there meal. and walked more sedately back to the hatching grounds.

As it was, neither girl ever really got the chance to approach the coveted queen egg. A bolder candidate moved first and began crooning a well known song to the egg and her failing guardian, Mirth. As she finished, the old gold hummed a low note and held it. Something about it stirred Hedria inside, and as more of the dragons voices joined in, the ever growing song evoked strong feelings of excitement and elation. Hedria didn't pause to ponder over the phenomenon.

Grinning fatuously, she looked over to the woman she had just spoken to. "Jays, it's starting!" she said, wide-eyed. For one nerve wracking moment Hedria's mind went blank and she stumbled over what to do next. Then all her teaching came rushing back to her and before she knew it she was sprinting out of the Hatching Grounds and to the barracks.

She had never been a quick runner - only a quick thinker - yet she made it to her room in seemingly no time at all. Regardless, Hedria knew there was no time to waste and immediately stripped out of her clothes. Tossing them haphazardly into a corner, she snatched the white candidate robe of its hook and slid into it. The moment it had settled over her shoulders she was hurrying out the door.

The weyrbowl was bursting with activity by the time she exited the barracks. Dragons laden with well dressed passengers were landing near the entrance, and once their burdens had been lifted they flew inside and up to their lofty roosts. People were streaming out of the kitchens and lower caverns. As spacious as the bowl was, it was crowded, yet people were quick to notice her white robes and get out of her way. Ignoring a painful stitch that was starting to grow in her side, Hedria kept her pace at a steady jog until she reached the enormous cavern.

As she slowed to a brisk walk and passed inside, she was met once again with a wall of heat. But now her feet were unprotected from the blistering stands. Although it was not enough to be damaging, it did burn terribly and Hedria found herself hop-skipping to where the other girls were gathering around the queen egg. She stopped at the side of the red-headed harper and bent over to catch her breath. Grey eyes glinting, she peered up at the woman.

"Good... luck..." she said, breathing between each word. Inhaling deeply, she straightened up and regarded the queen egg. Strong emotions roiled around inside her. Thrill, delight... dread. As excited as she was and despite all the teaching she had diligently listened to, she felt awfully unprepared.

((Omerzen shall be added later. ^_^ Gotta go for now. Be back sooon.))
PostPosted: Sat Jun 27, 2009 8:46 pm

Sevina looked at the woman who spoke to her. Blinking in surprise she smiled as she shifted from foot to foot. "Good luck to you as well." She said holding out her hand. "I am Sevina. Harper Master of Benden." She said then paled. "Well... Used to be Benden's.. It is gone now, but you know that." She said over the talk of the holders and masters filing into the hatching grounds.

Her eyes drifted to the majestically dressed holder people. Harpers, fishers, miners, and more. Her eyes searched for the deep blue of the Masterharper, but with so many people here she couldnt see. Suddenly dragons begin to land on the rim of the cavern. Golds, browns, blues and greens, so far above them, but shimmering and creening with new joy.

Sevina watched as whole flights of Fire Lizards soured in or pirched on there humans. She suddenly spotted Sev'en in the crowd. The little golds twisted white scar on her belly made her stand out.

The brunette looked to her side as another girl walked beside her and spoke. She smiled slightly in response and then looked back at the egg. She certainly didn't want to touch it... not now, when it was so close to being time. She swallowed, then bit her lip. Oh... if people were going to harass her into just touching it...

She walked forward and was about to stroke the soft shell when the old queen began to hum. She looked up at the great, old creature and her eyes widened. Oh dear! Her grey-green eyes returned to the other girl, then grinned as she ran with the others to the barracks. The ceremonial robes! They couldn't forget them!! Poor Isith awoke in a fright at her sprinting and went between for a split second before returning in the curly-headed woman's face, chirrupping angrily.

"Stop worrying! It's hatching time!" Lunara said as she ran into her room. Quickly shedding her tunic and skirt, she dressed in her white robes and slipped on the sandals that went with it. Oh she had to hurry! Her already curly hair was frizzing and curling even more with her worry. What to do??

She ran back to the Hatching Grounds as quickly as she could, Isith trailing behind her. Looking back, she stopped.

"No, Issy. Stay here. It wouldn't be good for you to be there." Issy chirrupped in protest, but nodded his little blue head and flew back to her room.

Sighing again, Lunara sprinted the rest of the way back, her hair in every which direction. Trying to smooth the curls as best she could, she walked inside. The humming was nearly deafening now! She gritted her teeth and returned to the golden egg. She swallowed again. Her stomach was tieing itself in knots.

...Who would Impress?

...Who would she Impress?
PostPosted: Sat Jun 27, 2009 10:50 pm

Esyn started to turn and noticed her follower. Was she Rising, were other males going to chase? Confused, she chirped at Buck but continued to glide around in lazy circles until the humming started. Suddenly, she blinked between and ran off.

A loud shout came from Jeb as he raced out of the cavern. He did it earlier than he had intended and it echoed more than he was expecting. Well, that would just be something else for the Candidate Master to punish him for after the Hatching. That is, if he didn't Impress first. Laughing, he came to a stop in front of his door, shoes lost along the way and his shirt and belt already off. The pants fell quickly and the jumbled mess of the robe sort of made it over his head. In the Hold, Jeb would have never even thought of running around with no clothing. Here, the young man had settled in enough that he didn't mind the fact that the robe didn't cover everything as he started the trip back. Fumbling as he went, the stubborn garment finally became untangled and fit as it was meant to.
