They have been brainwashed that chemical medicines are better than natural plants... surprised
Not always a bad thing- brainwashing is, but sometimes chemical medicines -are- better. For instance, jimson weed (Datura) and belladonna, foxglove and a good number of other medicines, they are intolerable in any (real) amount in the body- but when isolated, there are chemicals within that have potential to save lives.

People just have an inherant belief these days of "show me and I'll believe it". Modern medicine works fast enough you can say "See? Yesterday, pain. Today, no pain."

There's a huge difference between the little sick and the big sick. Herbal remedies (and other alternatives) are great for little-sick or for support care, but sometimes there's just a big-sick that needs a chemical medicine. Those times, you use herbs and such to support the body while the chemicals fight the disease.

(IE Leukemia, most cancers, pneumonia in most cases, ect.)

True 3nodding Well, no big-sicks for me yet, so I stick with the plants. ^^ If I get ever sick again, that is =/

I have a "big-sick", so for me a chemical medicine is my only alternative. Of course, I fully support my body with proper nutrition for my condition (I refuse to call it a disease) and supportive herbs.

^^ that's a good thing. I recently learned in my herbal lessons, that propolis prevents the chemical medicines to destroy the immune system (because such medicines actually destroy virusses AND immune system).

*nods* Very good! Yes, propolis can help the body's immune system stabilize itself, but not all chemical medicines destroy the immune system. Antibiotics do, for certain- they're designed to kill off -all- bacteria, including the good sort. But metformin, for instance, has no effect on the immune system at all- merely on the glucose and insulin levels in the body.

yeah, my uncle told me that too yesterday. Peniceline wouldn't kill neither. Still so much to learn... ^___^

Sometimes I like to think of modern chemicals as a more refined form of older remedies. It's like medical scientists took the chemicals from natural and holistic health methods and gave them more "umph." There are some cases where the rrace ammounts that are found naturally will do the job, but sometimes it just doesn't work out that way. Sometimes more drastic doses and concentrations, even unnaturally occuring combinations between several herbal elements are necessary.
So, when a lesser medicine is required, by all means do it. It's probably far better for the body to have barely enough of something than way too much of it. But don't hesitate to use the processed and refined chemicals when it it required.
That's just my theory though.

That's sometimes the case. I've also heard though that sometimes we just can't isoalte what it is in an herb that makes it work; which means it might be multiple compounds working together to create the beneficial property.

Back to the main thread question, part of the stigma as well is due to scammers and hoaxers. Sometimes herbal medicine gets passed off as more than it is by a scammer or falsely presented as scientifically proven to be effective. That element of pseudoscience can explain some of the anxiety around herbal treatments. Much of that has dissapeared more recently though I'm not sure that's a good thing.

Oh, that would so be me. XD I mean, I'm not a druid, of course, but I would be the woman with the medicine chest on my horse, going around from town to town with my plants and remedies. ^_^

... come to think of it...

Maybe I will. ^_^ I can always go out of country for a bit, since I want to travel anyway. Or I can go on the road doing outreach work. It's one of the requirements in the apprenticeship program I will do- some sort of herbal outreach.

Good luck on that one, Kyoki. Make sure that you stay in touch if you go anywhere.
