((Is this supposed to be a test or what? It looks to me like the former at the moment.))
1) How many mythologies did the Romans actually take names or deities from?
NB - As far as I was aware, Eros was far older than Aphrodite, being one of the offspring of Ouranus and Gaia (love is a very old force) and therefore on a par with Chronos, Rhea, Nyx, Erebus, etc. Are my search skills letting me down?
NB2 - On the list of the gods, should Freya's daughters Hnoss (jewel) and Gersemi (treasure) stand among them? I know that Hnoss was goddess of infatuation and sensuality, though I don't think that Gersemi had anything in particular to her name.
In fact, upon going trawling through the various stuff I have on my computer, the list of norse gods that I have runs to the following: Aegir, Andhrimnir, Astrild, Audumbla, Baldr, Bragi, Byggvir, Dafn, Dis, Eir, Elli, Eostre, Forseti, Frey, Freya, Frigg, Gefion, Gerd, Gersemi, Heimdall, Hel, Hermod, Hertha, Hlin, Hnoss, Hod, Holda, Holle, Holler, Honir, Hydlemoer, Idun, Jord, Kvasir, Laga, Lofn, Loki, Magni, Mani, Mimir, Modi, Nehalennia, Nicor, Njord, Nott, Od, Odin, Ostara, Saga, Sif, Sjofn, Skirnir, Snotra, Sol, Syn, Thor, Tyr, Ull, Ve, Vidar, Vili and Woden. Seeing as you have eight more, I think that the total is 70?

Heh, sorry. I suppose that was rather a long post. But yes, the question was: how many mythologies did the Romans steal from?

Gothic_Romantic Viscount Gothic_Romantic Viscount How many actual Gods(not gender specific) have stood among the Aesir? ninja I can see this as more of me trying to stump you. Hrm...nice question. On my behalf, I'd like to say 57. And if you'd like my evidence, here are the gods of which I know in alphebetical order. ^_^ Aegir, Balder, Bor, Bragi, Buri, Eir, Eostre, Forseti, Frey, Freya, Frigg, Frow, Fulla (Volla), Gefjon, Gna, Heimdall, Hel, Heonir, Hermod, Hlin, Hod, Hoenir, Huldra, Idun, Jord, Kvasir, Lodur, Lofn, Loki, Magni, Mani, Mimir, Modi, Nanna, Nerthus, Njord, Odin, Ostra, Ran, Saga, Sif, Sjofn (Vjofn), Skadi, Snotra, Sunna, Syn, Thor, Thrud, Tyr, Ull, Vali, Var, Ve, Vidar, Vili, Vor and Weiland. This list doesn't include other names of which they are known as. So if, according to you, there are more, double check the names. Also, misspellings sometime lead to a duplicate of another gods name, so if there are, in fact, fewer, blame the firggin' editors. XD You included the Vanir. xp Impressive list, though. That's everyone on the Norse Pantheon. And thank you fo the compliment. ^_^ *hint*hint* on expanding the list.... The Valkyrie are concidered Asa. And the Nornir are as well. (Though one Nornir is also a Valkyrie...) Hmmm... Maybe I should put together a list of ALL Northern deities, Vanir and Aesir and all their kennings (aliases).... Think anyone would like that in the group? Though the list would get rather expansive... Odhinn alone has about 50 kennings, and about seven spelling/pronunciation variations on his name based on region...

Maliyuki That would be an amazing list and one I'd probably have to save. xp Well then, I'll get to work on it. I should have it up by next Wendnesday. (would be sooner, but I'm in the middle of job hunting and looking for a place to rent and furthering other processes needed to complete a move *sigh* the annoyances of real life.)

Should Eros had been the son of Gaia and Uranus, would he not have therefore been a Titan and most likely kicked to s**t when Zeus took over? Considering I've never heard of Eros mentioned in any "early ages" story concerning the Olympians, I've always felt that the rumor of his being Aphrodite's uncle to be simply a romantic's taint. "Love was created when the first pairing happened and has been existant throughout time! scream " or some retarded s**t like that. The thing that amuses me greatly about Eros/Cupid is the romantic fascination with a God whose dominion over love had absolutely nothing to do with anything romantic. Exactly where do they think the word "erotic" came from?

Exactly where do they think the word "erotic" came from? Similar to how most mistakenly associate Aphrodite with love. Love and fidelity were the farthest things from this Goddesses interests. Just as Erotic is named for Eros, Aphrodisiac is named for Aphrodite. They were better associated with lust, sexual abandon, passion and a healthy libido and the satisfaction there of... Than anything remotely "romantic". It always humors me when you read the new age tripe about saving a relationship or making him more romantically attentive by invoking Aphrodite. More likely to turn your man into a raging, hormonal, unfaithful horn dog than to make him fall in love with you... Should the tripe even be taken remotely seriously.

Anteros would be a far better god to invoke - he was the god of requited love, when Eros tended to cause unrequited love instead. I've found his name, but cannot find his parentage sweatdrop . Damn my search skills!
EDIT: Okay, now I've found that he was created as a brother for Eros, who was pining and lonely(presumably ,this is pre-Psyche). Still can't find out who, though.

Gothic_Romantic Okay, I get it. Norse mythology isn't really my cup of tea. You don't need to rub it in. ;-; Actually you did a really good job... Most cant name more than five... And the "most" I'm refering to are mainly individuals that claim to worship them stare So yeah, very impressive work.

Don't worry, we all have our strong and weak points. Personally I know about some deities than others, from varying pantheons. Most of by knowledge is on a random group that includes Artemis, Hermes, Adonis, Freya, Tyr (less there, I must admit, as he is harder to find) and some on Rhiannon. Overall, my Celtic and Egyptian is pretty weak whilst my Greek and Norse are stronger.

I personally like the European and American myths as well as contemporary stuff, but my cousin is deeply into Asain and Pacific Island mythologies. So I get a few tid bits from him now and then, especially from Rapa Nui and Thailand. For his senior year, he's gonna be a foreign exchange student in Thailand ^.^
