I don't know too many fans of the True Blood books and show myself... My friend introduced the show to me during the first season, and I fell in love. I showed it to my boyfriend, and watching it became the highlight of our week. haha.
It wasn't until the second season of the show came out, that I noticed in the opening credits that it was based on "the Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris."
When I saw that I was really excited, so I immediately googled it. When I found out there were NINE books, I was ecstatic. I went out and bought them all the next day... except for the last one 'cause i feel ripped off when i buy books in hardcover, so i'm waiting...
anyways, I read them all in less than a week, cause I had a hard time putting them down. My boyfriend was exactly the same...
I agree that guys just don't read as much in general, and that is why there are less male fans of the series. Because my boyfriend is a typical action movie-loving/sports fan type of guy, and he's even more into the books than I was! He's always reading me funny quotes out of it as he comes across them.
While the True Blood books are definitely aimed at women, there is plenty in there for men to like as well. A lot of people just don't like reading in general.
