Ai gently crossed the street section of town, her eyes watching the shadows, "why are you all so persistent?" Her eyes gazing around the deserted streets, "go away, I don't want to be bothered now," the shadows streak downward and disappear into the crevices in the cement.

Ai traces her hand over the ledge of a small window. Glancing softly into her reflection, she feels a sudden pang in her palm, "Oh, I forgot I to treat this," she mutters as her palm slighlty steames.

Ai quickens her pace to a light jog as she travels down an alley-way that ends at her house...

The sun rises and sets over him a few times, and he stores up enough energy to take full stock of his situation.

From the attack, he is mostly recovered. His blood is moving well again, and he has enough strength to come down from the protective place. He stands at the top of the hill for a while, taking in the town from this overlooked point of view. He can see, from this place, where all the roads originate, travel, and terminate.

He chooses one, from way up here, where he has perspective, and starts down the hill.

He wants to find the stranger that helped him. Their interlude was brief, her help only passive, and she made no overtones of wanting to know him---but he owed her a favor, and he wanted that debt cancelled out as soon as possible.

Ai stirs slowly from her bed, tossing the ragged sheets aside. She glances towards her door, tugging softly at her messy hair. "What is fate up to?" she murrmurs as shadows flee down and under the door. She pauses and then exits her house.

The streets are already swarming with people, yet she still manages to wander about the streets. The sun rests high above her, casting thousands of confused shadows about her...

There is a rhythm to the sound of his feet hiting the pavement as he walks, and the things going on around him seem to sing the backbeat.

He believes that there is order, in this place, to even the most chaotic of circumstances. He sees himself as a melody maker, following the notes across the page to their eventual crescendo.

By what's left in his pocket, he comes by a loaf of fresh-baked bread, and eats it quietly, the heat of it warming him.

Ai stares passionately at the sight in front of her, an old man kicking at some random mutt, just a puppy. Throwing down her fist in a vehement motion, the old man topples as the mutt ran to safety. She watches with flaring eyes, disdainful at the sight of his actions, continuing with her walking, 'the old man deserved what he got' she muttered to herself. She once again zones out of her existance, seemingly nonchalant about anything.

But inside, she feels anger boiling, the all-to-familiar sensations coming back with resurfacing memories. Glancing out of the corner of her eye, she spots the mutt, limping and ragged, its gentle amber eyes pleading for affection, in a nearby ally.

Approaching the animal, Ai holds out a hand, "come here, it's all right," she comforts it, gently pushing the mutt forward with her shadows. She is able to bring the mutt up and holds it close to her chest, still muttering soft words to it...

He climbs up and sits in a second-story windowsil, and finishes his bread. He watches the streets below from this perch, trying to make out the subtleties of conversations and expressions, even the ones at a distance. He likes seeing and not being seen. He has found that in the modern hustle-bustle, people almost never look up. He watches a drug deal go down, not ten feet below him, with detatched scrutiny.

So many things changing hands, even under the watchful eyes of the local police. People trading bad for worse, good intentions for directions down the road to hell.

He is in the shadow of the window, and could only be seen by the mist escaping his mouth when he breathes, and only by the most attentive of people--those who look where others do not.

Ai wanders, seemingly lost, with the puppy in her arms. Staring softly, she whispers to it, "don't let the shadows overcome you." her body rests against the bank of the small stream that passes through the park, thinking of the people. She lowers her eyes, waiting for something, fate, to once again pull the strings, to make her its puppet, to take control of everything. "Each time we fight, never giving in, yet we always end in failure."

The rustling of the puppy stirs her, reminding her she needed to head home, to return to the stem of the flow.

He runs his fingers through the strands of his hair, separating them in the absense of a comb or brush. After a long period of watching, he decides to descend.

He climbs down, and looks across the street. He thinks, for a minute, that he recognizes the girl with the puppy, and that she might be the one he's looking for. He can barely tell, she's dressed differently, and he wasn't exactly thinking clearly the other night. He is a distant shadow, trying to get a good look at the girl's face when she turns. He watches for an unconscious and identifyable gesture.

He is about 70% sure... but not enough to approach her. He's not about to get pepper-sprayed.

Ai gently clutches the squirming puppy, trying to cross the street safely. Placing the puppy against her shoulder, she begins to head down, avoiding peoples stares. Sighing in annoyance, she lets the puppy down, her eyes focusing on its movements..."Ugghhh, can't you tell your in peoples way?" she groans as she tries to get the to behave. Rubbing its side, she scoots to the side of a building, waiting for the thing to calm down, she mutters quietly, "What's got you so excited?"

She ignore sthe people around her, letting them step over her, gently laughing at their inconvieniance...

He knows its only a matter of time before the mutt starts barking at him, and besides, he's sure enough that it's her. He approaches queitly. "Excuse me, Miss..." He worries that she might not recognize him, especially in the dark, and looking much healthier, and with part of his face covered with a scarf.

He pulls the scarf down a bit. "My name's Jourdaine. You remember me?" He looks down at the puppy, and smiles a little. He's got a special place in his heart for anything that's looked down on for not being pure bred.

Ai looks up, her eyes intrigued. "You're the man from last night!" she replies, pushing herself up off her bottom. "I was going to check up on you once I got my little friend here home..." she smiles, resting on her knees on the ground while rubbing the puppy's back.

"Since you told me your name, I'm Ai," she states, surprised at how he seems to have recovered. "So, are you going to tell me anything about last night or is it our little secret," she laughs, in a better mood than she has been in for a while.

He smiles, glad to see her jovial. "Oh, you were going to look in on me? I appreciate that, and would have never expected it.

It was just street violence, Miss Ai. Just desperate people." He doesn't tell her the full story just yet, and not because he doesn't trust her. More because it's only the second conversation they've ever had, and he doesn't feel comfortable launching into a diatribe about his condition and his market value. "I'm not in a gang, or anything, if that's what it looked like."

He looks down at his feet for a moment, and then to her puppy.
"What's his name?"

Ai nods her head to his reply to her question before scolding him, "One, the puppy is a GIRL," acting like she took direct offense, "and her name is...Kyrn...yep, that's going to be her name," she states after thinking for a couple of moments.

She considers before asking him, "is there anything in particular you'd like to do? Eat, chat, or inform me on how to take care of a puppy...it's the first one I've ever owned."

"I don't have any ideas.. I could give you a few pointers, I suppose. I raised a litter of abandoned pit bulls last year. Luckily they were pure bred, and I didn't have a problem finding homes for them." People seem to want the pure bloods, look on them with compassion. But the mutts always get kicked to the side if they fall in front of the wrong pair of shoes. "So how old do you suppose she is?"

he doesn't look cold, even though he isn't wearing much to protect him from the air. There is a toughness to him that was likely refined over years of living on the wrong side of the tracks.

"Couple years, maybe three, I'm not sure, but she seems young," Ai states, studying the puppy. "I've never really been into pure breeds, they're too conformed, I guess," she ponders, gently rubbing the puppy's ear. "I need to get her some supplies, where is that stupid supermarket again?"

But once more, the nagging feeling bothers her, she redirects her gaze towards a shadowed allyway, "maybe we should head on, if you don't mind."
