well, i started my magic carreer with a preconstructed Dimir deck. i built off of it and it turned out to be a pretty kick a** deck i keep it around for old times sake or when i feel like getting a blast from the past. but i don't really play it anymore. my smasher and control decks are too much fun.

I usually at least buy two of the one I want, and smash then together. Usually can get 3-4 ofs, and they usually end up being pretty good for casual play. The tweaking comes afterward. Most of my decks were made this way if their theme or function had a precon-intro-theme deck to begin with.
The duel-decks are the best I've seen for precons. I love those things.
I wonder if they will ever go to two or more colors for duel decks.

I started my official career of Magic with the blue/black Bait & Blugeon deck from Mirrordin. It was pretty good but I later learned that blue/black takes a bit too long for my liking so I took it apart and kept some of the better cards and remodified it and it works better. But I usually buy 1 from a set that I like and sometimes 2 but no more than that. I bought the red/black deck from Mirrordina nd didn't like it 'cause I don't like a whole deck made up of sacrificial stuff. I bought the red/black deck from Shadowmoor and it runs too slow 'cause most of the cards are a bit high mana cost for me. I didn't buy any of the conflux but I bought the blue/white deck from Alara Reborn and by itself it worked pretty good but i added a few more cards and it works well and then i bought hte red/black deck from Reborn and I haven't played it yet to see if it works or not.

I do the same thing i started with Charge of the Boros and bought like 2 of them to get skyknights, lightning helix and whatever else they had that was good. I had to wait for GameStop to drop the price to 4 bucks a piece before i could buy them in bulk but I bought 4 of those and and two of each of the other Ravnica theme decks. It was worht getting the Helix and the other expensive uncommons.

I actually found (through hard-won experience) that I work better w/ an existing framework than from-scratch ideas, typically. So the precons and duel decks are amazing for me to work with. I even go so far as to try and collect all the ones from a set, that way I get a good hard look at the mechanics, how they should work, and then I can sit down w/ the cards laid out in front of me and tinker. A lot. For a long time. ^_^ Currently I'm trying to mesh Jace and Chandra together, so as to pull out Guildpact's Cerebral Vortex; Jace gives my opponent cards, and Chandra makes him/her pay for the pleasure. twisted

I dont like it, myself. I'll take ideas that I can see from pre-constructed decks, but to use one in full, even after modding it to my specs makes me feel cheap. Like I cant win with my own cards/talents/skills/whatever.
As odd as it seems, I'd rather lose with my own deck than win with someone else's.
