Ho!!ow
An insubstantial, formless mass...

..ringed by a white glow of moon reflecting off of cigarette smoke...

.............pauses for a moment.

It's a good idea to keep an eye on Nate in this neighborhood. Otherwise, the boy might just score himself some trouble there's no getting out of.

Elenca emerged from the portal, clad in black leather and shaking the last droplets of the morning cleansing from her black hair. Her crimson eyes scanned the ally from the shadows, noting that her intended target was standing just a few yards away. Would he notice her?

Smiling wickedly she stands confidant and relaxed, waiting and observing these mundane events with a critical eye.

He doesn't know who it is...

But a watcher knows when it's being watched.

....experience tells him that the first one to talk is usually the last one to laugh....

He forms substantially, and holds out a cigarette to whoever owns the eyes on his back.

If you're going to stand there, you might as well talk.

Such a neutral statement. Maybe whoever it is will think he knows exactly who he's talking to.

Elenca is not fooled, she knows he is bluffing, but damn good at it. Again, people in this town seemed to have an instinctive talent for poker faces--Elenca chuckles softly, the sound both dainty and menacing to Hollow's ears.

Elenca refuses the cigarette politely as she steps forward and around Hollow, her walk unhurried or alarmed. She faces him and looks him over, finally able to take in the details of his appearance. She continues the conversation as neutral as he started it.

"Out for a stroll Mr. Hollow?" She glances around at the filthy surroundings with mild amusement. "A little dingy for my tastes, but anywhere dark will suit me." She says causally, her staff hanging loose and cold at her side. "Protecting that child yes? He does have knack for getting himself into trouble, doesn't he?"

You would think that being able to see the tormented spirits of the dead would have him trying to avoid becoming one of them.

He takes the cigarette between his scarred lips and lights it.

So are you here for a reason, or just randomly passing through?

His lip twitches just a litle around the cigarette filter.

She laughs merrily, her red eyes twinkling. "Yes, children can be tiresome, especially when given too much power, too quickly." She pauses, still smiling." Yes, I am here for a reason....you my friend."

Stirring slightly at what she thought was the low rustle of the wind passing through trees, the girl sat up and leaned her head on the edge of the dewy steel armrest of the bench. With her hair mussed by both wind and slumber, she opened her eyes and observed the two adults while blinking lazily. Though she stared on at them, neither noticed. The woman gave off an unpleasant feeling that made her squirm uncomfortably in her seat, while the man...he somewhat reminded her of her older brother. She had half a mind to follow him like a little duckling. Yet, she stayed where she was planted and picked at a coin that someone had rudely glued to the cobblestone path before her.

Nathanael paces a bit, still close to the little girl... whatever is to be done about this? There's no one he knows that can take such a feral girl, and yet he must not leave her alone.

He flips through options in his head while he flips through names in his cel-phone.

I was afraid of that.

He grins, stretching the scars around his lips.

I'm in a listening mood, if you came to talk.

I'm in a killing mood, if you came to kill.

She winks one red eye, keeping her demeanor pleasant and cordial. "I am always in the mood for both my friend, but this time I wish to "discuss" your situation here in Crosshaven. You are bound to this place yes? Care to tell me the sordid tale of how someone so powerful ended up chained to a pretty prince?"

She says this lightly, giving no indication of scorn or ill-manners, as if she is being very careful how she is wording her inquiries.

I got used, ******** over, shredded, left for dead, buried alive.

She notices at this point that some of the visible scars could have been from very deep strikes.

I had a grudge, you could say, against the whole city, every man woman and child. I acted on it.

He takes a long drag again, and slowly exhales, another grin forming.

Then old Nicholi's predacessor decided I was an unpredictable danger to society, and would be much more useful as his own private danger to society. Did a four-corners ritual, which bound me to stay inside the borders, and do whatever his corrupt a** commanded.

Nicholi came along, loosened the chains a little.
Managed to earn my respect.

...Nicholi....

Then died and left this pencil-d**k in charge.

He flicks the cigarette, it twists, turns, and sizzles out in a damp spot on the sidewalk. She knows he is being deliberately vague. He is not about to give her any information that can give her an inch of control over him--too many people have that already.

That's as much of it as everyone knows. No more. It is my experience that people don't ask personal questions like that unless they want one of two things, either to get on my good side, or to manipulate me themselves.

He grins again, like a predator.

So, which is it?

She smiles again, this time playfully. "Perhaps both again.." She laughs and gazes at him intently. "You were meant for more Hollow, it is a shame that you have been bound like this. Like a chained wolf...such a waste." She seems honestly remorseful, her smile fading as if it never were.

"Then again, have you ever sought to break the curse? Every spell has a counterspell; it should not be so difficult for one such as yourself to break these chains...or is there something your not telling me?"

She drifts closer, but keeping an arms length between them. She knows what he can do.

"It must be hard to confide in another with the shame you must feel-- I understand this. You have been humilated, scorned--why would you dare trust someone like me? However, the more information you share, the more likely I can help you with this....problem."

She give a half smile, full of challange and invitation.

"Your choice Hollow."

He doesn't like the name that stands out to him, but he knows he can trust him not to harm the girl--Ho!!ow is bound from hurting residents, and he will take her to a place where she can find shelter if so ordered. He calls Father Domenic and leaves a message for him to prepare to give shelter to the girl.

Then he text-messages Ho!!ow.... tells him the plan, orders him to comply.

My choice, eh? You know, I'm just a bit too old to bite that piece of bait, as juicy as it looks from here.

You shouldn't feign empathy, Elenca. It isn't a color you wear well.

His face turns suddenly cold and serious, almost psychopathic.

No one has sympathy for me.

No one wants to help me.

And as for a deal, there's no trust. You would find a way to ******** me.

He takes another drag, and chuckles. I am bound to protect them from you. All but one, and I won't cry if they find Dorien Cross's body behind a dumpster.

Walks in from around the corner and lays up against the wall, just listening, lites a cig and takes a long hard hit. Then breathes out a perfect circle. Then tightens his black hoodie and starts smoking again.

She picks herself up from a dirty place, and wonders what happened to her high. It's gone, like a bullet into a cloud of smoke, it just evaporated. Time now, for another fix, something else the body craves mindlessly.

She walks up to Umpy, following the cherry of his cigarrete as it swirls smoke in the air. She looks like a heroin addict-------and with good reason.

"Hey. You got another one of those, man?" She smiles a bit, shaking with the little twitches and gestures of early withdrawal.
