I usually say engine but yeah they are the same words for the same thing.

Electric cars are starting to look pretty favorable, the problem has always been the battery cost and life and not the engines.

Check out the Tesla Motors Roadster and the Lightening GT for some awsome electric cars (though they are still in the test phases unfortunately and in the 'yea you wish' pricerange)

Electric motors are always at best torque no matter the power band and that is the real appeal to them, especially for someone like me who is more interested in fast accel than a high top speed. Hybrids and alt fuel, alt engines are cool for small commuter cars and all well and good for being efficient but there are some pretty awsome things people have been working on for performance too that isn't just suck as much petrol and air in as possible.

Actually, it might be possible to address engine efficiency and scale down internal combustion motors even further if enough R&D dollars could be found; the valvetrain itself is incredibly parasitic, not to mention the energy losses through the rods and into the cylinder walls. This is why the rotary is so efficient; so few moving parts.

Yeah, the rotary is also so small and light too, but can they fix the torque deficit? I loved how the RX-8 felt around a cone track when I covered a Mazda event, but when I tested one and got on the freeway.... Also, I don't know why, but I would expect a bit better fuel economy from a 1.3L engine than what the RX-8 gets. sad

I think they can. There's one aspect of the reciprocating engine that the rotary doesn't have: an incredibly long overlap between power strokes that covers as much of the 360deg crankshaft rotation as possible. When they strapped another rotor to the Cosmo 3-rotor engine they ended up with nearly 800hp normally aspirated and some pretty impressive torque figures. Generally a 2-rotor is used, so maybe it is possible(don't quote me but; I'm very very far from knowing much about rotaries. The closest I've gotten to one is delivering end plates to the machinist) rofl

But you must remember that a 1.3L rotary will produce a hell of a lot more power than a 1.3L inline 4...in a car.
A tuned Hayabusa engine in a mini might get you slightly better economy and insane performance, but still.

But they'll still have that nasty farty sound. The only thing I hate more than the sound of an RX-7's exhaust is the disgusting sound of those obnoxiously loud Harley Davidsons that old dirty stinky men ride around in.

You'd hate me then, lol.
I love air cooled motorbike engines.
I quite like the sound of a rotary. whee

I think I'm too old for my previous post to have had any significance to anyone here.

There's a saying I heard a while ago, and no offence meant to anyone(this one came from a m8 of mine who's still in the trade) "a rotor sound the best just before it blows up." Don't believe it?

Listen to the engine just before it boes pop and lifts the bonnet

For just that split second, it sounds like a Ferrari motor on song...

I was one of those kids that couldn't afford a nintendo. Or any console for that matter. xp

My word that Rx7 does sound good. Sounds like a high reving motorcycle just before it dies.

I like the sound of rotaries too, my brother's Rx8 sounds wonderful. The low torque issue would seem that getting to higher speeds would be more exciting rather than getting there too quick. But it makes up for it around 8k to 9k rpm.

Farts will never sound as nice as purrs.
