To better answer your question, some believe in such things through faith, need, imagination and the like and some know because they have seen, touched, smelled, tasted, heard or otherwise experienced events that lead them to lesser known truths. More often than not it is impossible to tell them apart unless you have found the same truths.

The above statement confuses me. I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to say here.

While I may not be able to fully answer what Zac means by that, I can at least try to re-word it, as I believe I know what he means. Zac, if I'm wrong about any of this, please correct me.

Basically, most people choose to believe in the metaphysical (see the list for a list of good examples) because they feel the need to believe in something. Christians believe in God because they are told that if they "have faith" and "follow in Christ's footsteps," they will go to heaven regardless of what they've done in life. Others believe in it because their imagination is so wild, so vivid and so extreme that it makes it difficult for them not to believe in something of the sort. However, people like myself, Zac, and so many others that I've seen and met, refuse to believe in something just out of "faith" or the "need to believe." In fact, we don't believe in something. We follow our paths because, as Zac as already put it, we know it to be true through our own experience.

I'm not, however, going to say that it is easy picking out the metaphysical from what we know as physical. Knowing what I know now, it's not too difficult, but there is much that occurs at an unconscious level- and even at a conscious level- that isn't exactly "in the norm" even though they could easily be passed off as such. For instance, smelling something that isn't there; most people would attribute this to something that they're craving, but have you ever smelled death before like that? I have on several occasions within the last year, and it's not pretty. Have you ever "read someone's mind" or had someone else read yours? That falls under the metaphysical as well, and I've done both. I've also made people feel things that aren't there, like a slight, insubstantial breeze.

Every one of those things can very easily be passed off as something else: Smelling death can be passed off as a dead animal being nearby very quickly and easily, and it makes for a perfect rationalization for something as unexplained as smelling rotting flesh inside your house; telepathy can easily be dismissed as nothing more than "thinking what I'm thinking" or "mere coincidence"; and most people would just figure that something like those breezes are a "nice change of weather." It's too easy to do, and I still have much to learn along these topics.

I do plan on sticking around for this topic, though, as I'd like to use it as a source of knowledge for my own studies. Zac, again, if you feel I missed part of what you meant- or the whole thing, for that matter- or that I inadequately explained something, please correct me. I would hate to be filling in false information.

You have put it very well Eliae Darr, I don't believe there is anything to add really.

Now, so far one person has made a suggestion for the first topic to be covered, does anyone else have a suggestion on which one they would like to discuss first? I would like to pick topics as democratically as possible.

I vote: World Mythologies, Philosophies and Religions. I think this is the option that I know the least about.

I think I'll go ahead and cast my vote as well.

I think that World Mythologies, Philosophies and Religions would be a great starting point, followed by either Psychic Abilities or Planes of Existence. All of the topics that you've listed sound incredibly interesting, and some of them I even know a little bit about. The only other one that I can think of that would be a good follow up to Mythologies would be Spiritual Exploration and Enlightenment, but I would personally rather see one of the other two.

Alright that's 3 votes for World Mythologies, Philosophies and Religions. I'll wait one more day for anyone else who wants to weigh in on this and then we'll begin the discussion.

That would be three votes for #9, Zac.

As for what you meant, I think I understand now. You're saying that most people believe in such things because they would feel as though they were lacking some part of their lives, or because they cannot perceive their lives without it, am I correct?

And if I understood Darr correctly, that, if you know how to determine things in a quick and rational matter, you are able to determine what to believe is or isn't real?

... Now that I've said it, I feel silly for not getting it in the first place.

But, I think that World Mythologies, Philosophies and Religions has won out. Do you think it would be too difficult to simply start there?

Very well, let's begin with #9, World Mythologies, Philosophies and Religions.
Now to narrow it down even further lets look at the subtopics:

1. Celtic
2. Norse
3. Greek/Roman
4. Native American
5. Middle Eastern (Persian, Sumerian, Islam, Judaism)
6. Eastern (India, China, Mongolia, Japan)
7. Italian
8. Russian
9. African
10. Egyptian
11. Modern (Modern Primitive, New Age, Neo-Pagan, Wicca, Re-constructionist)

I promise after this selection the discussion will begin.

I would have voted for psychic phenomenon. I've always found the testimonies of a skeptic to hold the most value and I've much to share...Maybe next time.
How about we discuss Norse, mythology, if you can rope Matt into posting.

I think Norse is a good idea. It's always been something I've wanted to look into but never got the chance.

Wow, has it really been this long since I looked here? Jeez...

Anyways, to (hopefully) get this thread on the move just a little bit quicker- and because it's part of what I'm currently studying- I'm casting my vote for Norse mythology as well. I'd also like to take a look at Celtic and Eastern at some point as well, but I'm going to stand my ground for Norse as the lead-off.

That would be three for Norse mythology.

Seeing as you probably have the most knowledge about it, why don't you start, Darr?

Not to take control of the thread or anything, but Daemon hasn't been here since Wednesday last week...

While I may be more knowledgeable than some on the topic, I am most certainly lacking in many of the finer points of the mythos, as I only have a general idea of it. Matt and Zack would probably be better bets on a reliable source than I at this point.

Sorry about not posting for a while, I've been busy with finals and most of my free time has been taken by Matasoga's new RP. I am working on a post of a general overview of Norse mythology now, it may take me a little while longer but I promise it will be up soon. From there I am hoping that Matt will put in the finer details and then we'll open the floor to everyone for more information and questions.
