Ceanairceach -- ‘Eldest’s rights’ are not a hard concept to understand. They refer to the unscrupulous nature of most oldest siblings when it comes to searching their younger siblings’ belongings, and give them an excuse to do it, and another excuse to show how many rights they have where their siblings have none.
So it was this in mind that Madison flipped through Hope’s diary at midnight after Hope had stayed up and refused to talk for three hours. Madison knew she wouldn’t be caught—you knew Hope was asleep when she started talking. She was un-wake-able while she rambled in her dreams.
“The bunny… promised me… candy… I want my candy… stupid wabbit…” Madison held back a snort and turned on her small flashlight when she reached what she thought was the last page.
I’ve been feeling all stiff lately, but it went away after PE when we did yoga, so I guess it was just a weird sleeping position or something. Mom was going through our birth certificates and stuff today. It was weird, but mine looked exactly like Maddy’s, but Todd’s looked different. The doctor’s signature was the exact same for me and Maddy, too. The same doctor delivered us? But Mom always likes to tell us how Maddy was delivered in New York when mom was on layaway, and I was delivered here, after she was in labor for twenty-three hours. Also, I went in Dad’s office to do my homework away from everybody’s noise and saw the papers Mom was working on sitting there. I was procrastinating and I looked through them. Maddy and Todd have all kinds of doctor’s stuff from their first year, I don’t have any before I was five months old, except my birth certificate. I’m confused, but I can’t figure out who to ask. Maddy is still taboo-ing the subject, and Mom was doing the same thing today. Todd wouldn’t know anything.
It went on from there about other things that Madison had known anyway. She closed the book and slid it back to its hiding place, before heading to her own bed. She didn’t get a lot of sleep, turning Hope’s well-thought-out pieces of evidence over in her mind.

Most people would be feeling something if they found themselves sitting next to the student body president, especially if they didn’t usually find themselves there. Jason was feeling SOMETHING alright, but it wasn’t the usual feeling.
Parker Eppard was a senior with the mental capacity and age of a five year old. He did a yearly ‘dance’ in the school talent show, to a very strange mix of songs (the previous year’s had included been a tribute to Britney Spears and Paris Hilton in dancing, to ‘RESPECT’ by Kelly Clarkson) that always ended in him ripping off a pair of the pants that snap at the sides so it’s physically possible to rip them off. The day after the election, people were still in shock. Everyone admitted to voting for him, but it had been as a joke.
Jason was his partner for a Spanish in-class activity, and he was trying, once again, to turn the conversation back to something remotely Spanish-related when the bell rang. Any anger or stress he was feeling vanished during PE, so by the time he got to lunch he was calm again.
There was a noticeably missing seat next to Madison, who was talking enough she might as well have been gone herself.
“Where’s Hope?”
Madison looked up from her food and seemed to come back to earth. “Fever. Came on this morning when she almost fainted. Mom’s home with her because when she was sturdy enough to talk she said she’d gotten ten hours of sleep and had no reason to fall over. They might go see the doctor later.” She went back to eating and Jason noticed Selena and Sara exchange a look. Hope had been gone before, why was this time making Madison act like a zombie?
The mood of the table shifted for the worse as Sara turned to Selena, “Umm, my mom asked me to ask you and your mom if you’d want to testify in her divorce court. She wants to get custody to keep me and Sasha away from Dad, but she also said we might end up living with you guys so it’d be easier if you testified, even though your mom has gone to court against Dad before. I didn’t really want to ask your mom before you knew… It’s going to be really weird.”
Selena blinked. “Sure, I guess. And I’ll help you ask. Mom’s been getting scarier with Dad in town for this whole deal.”
“Thanks.”

Selena had organized a Good Luck Party. She and her half-sister would be missing the next two or three school days to be in court, and Hope was missing the next day to go to the hospital for tests to find out what was wrong with her. Her weird symptoms hadn’t continued, but their mom was worried enough about the first ones that she was willing to seek help.
They were all sitting in the Catt’s basement, munching on chips and popcorn and the good luck cake someone had made (all they were told was that it wasn’t Sara or Selena, and thereby edible) while Madison and Sara faced off in DDR. It was just the eight of them, as Anna had a date with Andy. Jason had been surprised to find they were going out now, so he’d tacked Andy’s name onto the excuse when he told Selena where Anna was. He’d been more surprised by the defeated expression on Matt’s face when Selena told the rest of them.
Sam was lying on his back, occasionally joining in the conversation. His grandfather was coming into town in the near future (he had neglected to mention when), and his house was going to be even more tense than usual. Erin assumed that was why he was being even stranger than usual, and let it go.
The party/hang-out session was winding down when Erin’s cell phone started ringing. She hit Jason on the arm and ‘shh’ed everyone else before answering it.
“Hello?”
What’s up, Erin? Long time no see. My counselor gave me a present for my eighteenth birthday, since I don’t need Child-Serve’s services anymore, now that I’m a man. He gave me your number, isn’t it great? Now we can start talking again, and I can come visit you!”
Erin froze. She finally found something to say, and she shouted it. “YOU LEAVE ME ALONE, CAIN!” She closed her phone violently before turning to Selena. “I’ve got a family emergency that just came up, I’ve gotta go. Good luck with your dad, and good luck with the doctors, Hope. Bye, guys.” And she ran up the stairs and out of the house.

“Tell me.”
“I can’t.”
“Please, tell me.”
“I already told you, I can’t!”
“And why can’t you?” Jason was pleading with Erin now. Matt and Sam were watching, slightly confused, while Madison tried to ignore it and get her homework done before it was due first period. Unfortunately, the conversation was both loud enough and interesting enough that she was failing at ignoring it.
Erin paused, clearly debating the answer with herself. When she answered, it had an air of finality. “Because it won’t be a problem for much longer.” She stood up and headed for her locker as an excuse to leave them.
Jason looked at Sam as if for help, but Sam just shrugged. “Maybe it’s just that time of the month.”
Maddy sent him a disgusted glare. “She’s clearly got something going on that she doesn’t want to talk about. Jason asking about it just meant she had to think about it more, instead of being able to forget about it for a little while. Girl’s emotions are not entirely ruled by their periods, Samuel Whateveryourlastnameis!” She huffed and shoved her book in her bag before stalking off.
Sam shook his head and looked at Matt. “See? There goes another one. Right, Jason? Jason?”
Jason was staring at the ground, looking depressed and Sam shook his head again. “This place is no fun once Selena and Sara leave, is it?”
“I guess.” Matt just fiddled with his backpack’s strap. Everyone was moody, it was best to stay out of it.
You're welcome! One of my favorite parts. XD
