You guys are all lucky. You all got one way or another to learn japanese. I'm stuck watching anime in japanese to learn and so far I only got 'stop it', 'hello','good-bye', thank you' and a few other simple ones down.

Right now my mom is teaching my sister and I the Japanese language. I know Hiragana, and some japanese words. : D Now we're working on Katakana. It gets harder and harder and I really want to be in a japanese class at my school too so I can get twice the education. But my school doesn't teach it. It has freaking sign language but not japanese, I mean WTF! Everyone at my school are anime nerds so the classes would be FULL! They'd be rich!
Tch, anyways, I know a way that can help you learn the japanese language without it being the subtitles of animes.
*Drum roll please*...
Japanese songs. : D Download your fav japanese songs onto your ipod or mp3 and get used to hearing the japanese language. It'd be a great practice with singing it and understanding what some of it means. If you like Girlfriend from Aviril Lavigne then there's a japanese version of that she sung, go listen to that. xD (I don't like that song but you might.)
I hope no one had already said this, I was too lazy to check. Bah, anyways, I download the full song versions of the opening and ending songs from anime. My fav are the ones from Naruto and stuff. It helped me a lot actually.
Here are some japanese words I learned that you would hear from anime:
Seasons.... Spring: Haru Winter: Fuyu Summer: Natsu Fall: Aki
Body parts... Eye: Me Ear: Mimi Nose: Hana Mouth: Kuchi Hair: Ke Head: Atama Face: Kao Eyebrow: Mayuge Eyelash: Matsuge Neck: Kubi
Animals... Dog: Inu Cat: Neko Snake: Hebi Hippo: Zo (No, wait, I think elephant is Zo....hmmmm, can anyone check? I'm too lazy) Bird: Tori Rabbit: Usagi Fox: Kitsune Human: Ningen Ninja!: Shinobi (Just had to add this)
Colors... Blue: Ao Red: Aka Yellow: Kiiro Green: Midori Purple: Murasaki Black: Kuro White: Shiro Brown: Chairo
Days of the week... Sunday: Nichi-youbi Monday: Getsu-youbi Tuesday: Ka-youbi Wednesday: Sui-youbi Thursday: Moku-youbi Friday: Kin-youbi Saturday: Do-youbi
I'm sure everyone knows Mother and father and older brother and stuff, right?
Family... Mother: Okaa-san Father: Otou-san Grandma: Obaa-san Grandfather: Ojii-san Old Brother: Onii-chan Old Sister: Onee-chan Little bro: Otouto Little sis: Imouto Aunt: Oba-san Uncle: Oji-san Cousin: Itoko
Warning: You may pronounce these words wrong! Like the japanese word for eye is not "me" as in "you and me" but like "meh". Like in EHHHHH!? Just add an 'm'. Hope you understand this.
I know more but I just can't remember what it was. Like I said, I hope no one already said this. Anyways, everyone knows greetings and stuff...what else. Watashi wa, boku wa....yeah you know....what else...hmmm....I KNOW
Insults: a*****e, idiot, stupid, dumbass: Aho Idiot: Baka Girly, pretty boy: Bishonen (I think)
That's all I know.... 3nodding I'm so glad everyone likes Japanese. ^^ If you move to Japan, see you there cause my dream home is there and I KNOW I'll be moving in. Yay homeland!

I will just repeat that word until I'm deported, lol. Do you happen to know japanese for 'why'? I'd REALLY appreciate annoying people with that. Hey, Ramen, can I ask the difference in pronunciation of 'onee-chan' and 'onii-chan'? I never quite understood it and always pronounce it the same in my head, lol.

Hey, Ramen, can I ask the difference in pronunciation of 'onee-chan' and 'onii-chan'? I never quite understood it and always pronounce it the same in my head, lol. I'm pretty sure the word for "Why?" is "Nande?" or "Doushite?" And for the pronounciations for Onee-chan and Onii-chan... Older brother/Onii-chan. It's like O-nee-chaun. Like how you say cheese. Ch eese. On ii. Older sister/Onee-chan. It's like O-neeh-chaun. Not 'e' as in, when you say cheese, but like ten. On ee. T en. Everyone says 'chan' like Jackie Chan's last name, Chan, but it's not. Its like Chaun. Cha-oo-n. It's really annoying. >W< I'm sorry if my explanations are difficult to understand, it's so hard explaining by typing it, ya know? It's easier to just say it to you. Wish I had a recorder.

Not only do I love the Japanese language, I love Japan itself! Its true I started liking that country after becoming a manga/anime fan sweatdrop
But I've started gaining more interest in their culture. If you guys got things to share, I'll be glad to listen - er, read lol.
I'm taking the Japanese language for my highschool language coarse. So far I've master Hiragana and Katakana, but I've barely brushed the surface of Kanji. It has so many letters o_o Speaking it is pretty easy too, but I have trouble with sentence structure and connectors. (ex: wa-subject marker)

Do you pronounce Chan as... Chen? Like, chant without the 't'? xD The 'ee' in onee-chan is more of a save or always sound, in my opinion. Like, hey without the y. The 'e' in ten is like the 'e' in error, and it's different from how you pronounce onee-chan. Confusing, huh? Namida means tears if I'm not mistaken, and mori is forest. mrgreen

Yes, you're right. The Japanese have one specific way of pronouncing each letter. It doesn't change - unlike the English language.
You pronounce "a" like "ahh", "i" like "e", "u" like "ew", "e" like "hey" without the H, and "o" like... well "oh" lol.

Woo-hoo, Japanese. I've been taking classes for it and am in the 201 level finally. Only two people are in this class; sadly, though. :/ Myself included. And it's strictly online, which sucks. I liked it MUCH better when it was in an actual classroom. I guess not enough people at my college reached this level and wanted to continue on, or something of the sort. The sad thing is, it's my first online class ever and I often times forget about the class altogether and end up missing some deadlines. ;w; I need to put Post-It notes all over my desk or something to get myself to remember. *Siiiiigh*

Personally, I'm taking my third semester of college Japanese. At first I was taking it solely because I wanted to be able to understand anime better and hopefully one day write manga over there. But by the time I took my second semester, I started considering majoring in it because I loved the language so much. My courses have been based around the "Japanese for Busy People" series. So far it's been pretty good. For the writing system we went from hiragana to katakana, and now we've begun kanji.
I've especially found the kanji interesting. Kanji have not only multiple meanings depending on the combination but also different pronunciations. I've been finding the idea behind them interesting as it provides a new aspect into their minds. For instance, if you write the kanji for sun and root in that order, you get the word "nippon" which is what they call their own country. Thus you can understand why it's called "The Land of the Rising Sun." Also volcano is the kanji for fire and mountain. I could go on forever but I'll stop before I bore everyone to death.
