"I don't think that lava is the best place to test it out," Aniane insisted.
But then, what else were they going to do? Aniane sighed. "Are they still growing? They itch...." He spun in a circle trying to catch hold of one of his wings, then tripped and flapped to stay upright. He crossed his arms to keep his hands still. "I mean, they really itch, and where are we going to practice? I've never flown before." Although he'd come close to it just then, without realizing it.

"Aw, come on, it can't be that hard." Eti grinned. "Scared?" And before he could reply, she stretched out her wings as far as they could reach and began to flap. Warm air rushed away from her as her wings flapped faster and faster, and gradually Eti found her toes lifting off from the ground. She could feel the immense weight of her body tugging her back downwards, but she concentrated on moving her wings up and down, up and down, till she was at least three feet above the ground. Sweat rolled down from her forehead, and her face had turned rather red from exertion, but she continued flapping. Suddenly, a rush of warm air swooped under her wings, and she soared upwards, high above Aniane's head. Eti let out a scream, half from fear but half from excitement, as she flipped over in the air. She held out her wings in desperation, staring in fright at the bubbling lava beneath her. "Aaaaaaaaaahh!" she cried as the upcurrent disappeared and she began to nosedive. She rushed, faster and faster, towards the deadly lake of melted rock. Eti screwed up her eyes. Better not to see it happening. It would all be over soon. It was a miracle! She swooped upwards, nearly brushing the lava with her toes, and sailed up once more. With a relieved whoop, she tilted to one side and turned in a lazy circle, soaring back to Aniane. She flapped her wings to slow herself down, and let her toes come to rest once more on solid rock. "You see?" Eti panted, wiping her sweaty forehead with her sleeve. "Nothing to it!"

Aniane froze when she nose dived, and when she came back to him he nearly died of shame. He should have jumped off to save her, assuming that he could fly too. "Alright, alright," he agreed sheepishly. He stared at her whistfully, then began copying her.
The new muscles in his wings responded with some difficulty, but just like her, he got off the ground. "Great!" he exclaimed once he was flapping in place a few feet above the ground. "I'll race you to the other side!" It was exhilerating to fly and he wanted to get moving before they both tired out. By watching her he had learned where one current was, and tipped into it. Even though he was half expecting it, he yelped in surprise when the current lifted him another hundred feet and then let go, forcing him to flap desperately to stay up.
Then he had a better idea and held his wings out, gliding at a downward angle over the lava. There were a lot of currents over the lava, but they were sporadic, holding them up and dropping them the next instant.

((Have you ever played the video game Jak 3? It's got this funky glider thing you have to fly in certain places, and I'm getting all my flying tips from that.))
Eti's eyes narrowed as Aniane set off. "Oh, yeah?" she shouted after him, running to the end of the safe rock, flapping her wings and aiming at the upcurrent she had used before. She felt the whoosh under her wings as she soared upwards again, and she aimed towards the far shore. Why was Aniane darting all over the place, going up and down and side to side when he could be going straight just as easily? Suddenly, Eti remembered what had happened to her, and understood why. As the air began to fail under her wings, she desperately wheeled to one side. She could almost see the various upcurrents coming from the vents in the rock, as if they were bits of fog shooting upwards. She hit one straight on and zoomed up again. She began to copy Aniane, darting from upcurrent to upcurrent, though all the time she tried to cut corners. Several times, she was sure she wouldn't make it to the next upcurrent, but right as she finished thinking that, she would hit the blast of hot air and soar towards the next one.

(As dorky as it sounds, I used to read Animorphs xd But no, I've never played Jak-- just PilotWings)
Aniane yelped in excitement as he zoomed over her, ahead for a very brief moment before he had to tip one wing to turn and aim for a stong current. Dropping was incredibly scary, but if he was too high off the ground it would be more difficult to land safely. So, get singed or scraped?
Eti was ahead of him now. Aniane got distracted trying to watch her and fathom some of the risks that she was taking. Even just gliding, he could feel the strain on his unused muscles, so watching her flap so much to keep at a safe height made his brain hurt. He wondered briefly if her wings were actually bigger than his. Hmn, it looked like it.
"Ah!" he screamed as he tuned back into his own flight pattern. He was dropping fast. Hitting land would not be a problem, but hitting it softly would be impossible. He felt like God had thrown him at a rock on the ledge, the big one that he was going to hit if he didn't turn or flap enough. Aniane flapped, up at first and then back, trying to slow himself down. He hit the ground with an oomph and a tumble, instinctively curling his wings against his body to protect them.

((sorry for the absurdly short post))
"Yikes!" cried Eti, rushing over to him. She had landed a moment before he did. She pulled him into a sitting position and looked him over. "Guess you didn't break anything, but I'm no doctor, you know. Still..." She suddenly grinned. "I beat you."

He was dazed, but not too much to get to his feet. "Barely," he humphed, his pride a bit injured. "I'm fine. Let's just...not do that again. We want to go north, right? It's this way--" He pointed casually due north. He had always been good with directions and didn't look at the sun to get his barings. If you spun him in a circle he would still know which way he was facing. And that was before the dragon puffed magic at them.
"Where are you headed, any way? You came here for some one else, right?" he asked, remembering what he had heard.
(that's quite alright!)

"Well, look who's got a good memory!" Eti joked before answering his question. "Me, I'm off to Durnstrad. You know, at the foot of the mountain. That's where I live. Good burg for a mercenary, you know! Tons of people pouring in, right close to the capitol so there's always a war going on someplace where somebody might wanna send you. I've been in about...oh...five wars, not counting a little skirmish off at Hasteful. That one sure wasn't fun. Bunch o' cowards. You been in any battles?" As she spoke, Eti led the way confidently through the passage she had entered in half an hour ago, only stopping her barrage of talk when the cool wind of the outdoors hit her unprotected face. For a moment, she felt as she would have if she had suddenly left a warm, toasty tavern to find herself standing before a wintry gale, but then she felt a prickling all over her skin and the ubrupt coolness of the summer mountain air felt comfortable. The sun was shining high in a clear, cloudless sky, and Eti could see for miles all around, to forests and valleys, lakes and the rest of the mountain range angling off to the right. A small smudge of smoke below them announced the town of Durnstrad. Eti took a deep, satisfied breath and pushed down the hood of her Firecloak, shaking out her wavy red hair that spilled down below her shoulders, completely unchecked and rather wild-looking. Her face was now totally revealed for the first time to Aniane; it was round except for a pointed chin, and her nose was rather skinny. Her eyebrows were dark red, almost brown, and seemed to angle downwards in a determined look, though the twinkle in her extremely dark green eyes betrayed a rather playful nature. The scarlet scales of her wings and tail, glittering in the noonday sun, fit her hair extremely well, and made a pretty contrast with the black of her borrowed Firecloak.

Aniane cleared his throat. "No...I, I haven't been in any wars. Not that I haven't seen my fair share of trouble," he assured her quietly, embarrased. "My people don't really... leave their dessert. I'm the first in one hundred generations."
Compared to her barrage of information, Aniane's short piece seemed compact and reluctant. But then, from his description, he was a loner. He was from an isolated place, probably far to the south, and he'd been loner enough to defy tradition to come out here alone. The desert he spoke of might even have been familar to her. The thing was, nobody went there. Not just because it was a desert, but because of the magical fire storms. Only fire elementals seemed to have any luck controling the storms, and then just enough not to get themselves burned. And what was the point? So they could walk across a desert, die of thirst? There were much more interesting things to take care of here at home. If any one knew about his little villiage, they had written them off long ago as dried up and blown away.
"I walked around Durnstrad on my way here. It looked nice."

"'It looked nice,'" Eti mimicked, stuffing her fist in her mouth in the attempt to stifle her giggles. "Nice is one thing it sure isn't," she finally gasped out when she regained her composure. "Well, according to normal standards, anyway. I like it, but then again I like a bunch of things not many people like too much. There's a ton of crime, so you've either gotta watch your purse or stow it somewhere they won't think to look." She winked slyly, and then her eyes widened slightly as she reassured him, "But don't worry; the murder rate's been going down every year. Pickpockets have sorta learned the patrols don't like kniving episodes very much. Still, keep your weapon handy and don't draw attention, and you'll do fine." She patted her sword hilt with a grin. "Well, shall we get started? We don't hafta fly, you know." She chuckled to herself.

Aniane stared at her. "Oh. Is that where we're going?" he realized. "Wait-- you've got to meet some one there, right? And tell him about the inscription? Me, I didn't find what I was looking for, so that means more looking. But there's no where to look, yet, so I guess a grimy city will do." He wasn't used to putting so many words together, but he gave it another try after clearing his throat. "I don't have any weapons."

"Pah, weapons," Eti scoffed. "You won't need 'em, so long as you stick with me. I know the ins and outs of Durnstrad like the back of my hand. Been there since I was a kid. But what are we standing here yabbering for? Come on, let's go!" Eti grabbed Aniane's arm and pulled him along as she started down the trail. "So, what did you say you did for a job again? And whatcha looking for, anyway?"

Aniane gave her an amused look when she yanked him along behind her. "Right now, I guess my job is what I'm looking for. I used to protect my people from magical storms. But the storms are getting worse, and if the next high mage is weaker than me... my village could be consumed in fire." He shrugged. "I mean, right now we're ok. There was even some one I could leave behind to protect them. But I really don't want to stick around the place, so it would be nice to bring them back something in exchange, so that they aren't always depending on some one like me to protect them. There was supposed to be an amulet in that statue, but that dragon thing chased us away."

Eti felt an inexplicable ire rise inside her. "Well, no wonder!" she exploded, brows harshly drawing together. "How would you feel if somebody came barging into your house, looking for your wedding ring or something like that? It's no wonder Amarynth did this to us." Eti thought for several moments before she breached an entirely different subject, her voice much quieter this time. "Not to pry or anything, but you got any family? Like a brother, or something? I...I don't." She hastily cleared her throat and forced herself to think about daisies. Nice daisies...sitting in a patch of them... Don't try to think about them, Eti told herself. Just forget them; they're gone. But Eti knew that she wouldn't cry. It was a comforting thought, and so instead she waited for Aniane's reply.

The boy looked at the ground when she exploded, feeling somewhat ashamed. Half of him remembered quite clearly believing that the dragon was dead, and treasure for the taking, but the other half...
"No, I don't. Never did." Aniane had a father that he'd grown up around, but he considered himself disowned. "But there were one or two people I'd wished I could take with me..." He shrugged. "But I couldn't."
He didn't want to ask her about her family because he'd just lied about his. Aniane cleared his throat. "You got any one waiting for you in the city, or are you a loner like me?" he asked with a smile.
