"Emalia, regarde." Mme. Creme held a letter out in front of the girl's nose. "C'est vrai?"

Emalia took the piece of parchment and scanned over it. School of...what? Certainly they must have been joking. "A prank, maman." She said simply, and left it on the kitchen table.

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry
Headmaster: Albus Dumbledoor

Dear Miss E. E. Creme,

We await your owl. Term begins...

In the sitting room, Emalia found another letter of the same look. Parchment, purple ink, but this one was attatched to the leg of a bird! An owl. Her father held the tiny black owl in his hands, and he seemed to be chuckling. "Emalia, cherie, are you a witch?"

Emalia had to grin. "Non, papa, but I can do a bit of magic on you!" She cried, wiggling her fingers and making zapping sounds.

Henri croaked. "Petite cherie, je suis une grenouille!" he said with mock surprise.

"If you are in fact a frog," Emalia said solemnly, "then ribbet."

The man did so with an utterly straight face. After a moment of silence, both broke down into peals of laughter. "Papa, wouldn't it be grand if I was magic?" the little girl said at last, after both calmed down a bit.

"Oh, it would." Mathilde said, appearing in the doorway, leaning against the doorframe. "But that's a faraway dream, isn't it? Just some silly joke a child played on us."

Emalia nodded and beckoned for her mother to come take a seat next to her. "Maman, it does seem like quite a lot of work though. Far too much for a prank, non?"

"Petite fleur, forget it. It's nothing." The woman smiled at her daughter and leaned back on the plush couch. "Don't you think we should let the little thing go?" She asked after watching the tiny black owl dart around the ceiling. "Someone must be missing an owl this mignonne."

"I'll get the window." Emalia chirped, but as she stood with the intent of opening the window, the latch popped off, flying across the room and into her father's lap.

The window did, in fact, open, but the tiny black owl did not leave. Instead, it merely sat in the sunshine, preening its ruffled feathers.

"Mon Dieu." Mathilde said simply.

"Comme par enchantement!" Henri exclaimed, his eyes wide with amazement.

"La magie..." Emalia murmured. Magic. That was magic...

"Well," her mother recovered from the shock first. "I suppose this school is real, non? And you will be going." She cracked a small smile. "Of course, it is rather far away. London? We will need a guardian for you, of course." Mathilde was acting as if this was very much the norm.

"I suppose..." Emalia said softly. "I suppose we should send a letter back with our acceptance?"

Yesterday another owl came, and with it, another letter. This time the acceptance was from Beauxbatons, another magic school, but this one was in France. Having lived here my proud eleven years, how could I not have noticed a school of magic? Why haven't I heard about it in the papers, or gotten some sort of pamphlet?

I wonder if I'll have to stop using ballpoint pens. Both letters were written in ink, but I have a feeling it's not the ink I"m accustomed to. Oh, how my penmanship will suffer. And what about my excellent marks? Will they drop as well? I've no experience in magic, of course. And I doubt knowing the countries of Africa will help much either. Goodness, but this is inconvenient.

I lie. Of course I'm ecstatic to be going to a school of magic. Who hasn't dreamed of such a chance?

I don't think I'm going to go to Beauxbatons. Yes, it's closer, but Hogwarts did ask me first. That makes sense, right? They must obviously want me to come more than the other school does. It's only logical to pick the one that wants me the most. I will need to find a guardian in London, but I'm sure that can all be arranged. Maman has friends all over Europe.

Maman has found me a guardian! Her name is Sukiwen. A truely unusual name, but she lives in London, and that is enough for me! Apparently, she already has two other girls living with her. One's about my age, and the other is just a baby. They are supposed to be a bit odd, though, but Maman has left the imagining up to me. I do hope they are kind.

Today we are to go shopping for clothing! I already have a sizable wardrobe, but this is an occasion! Of course we have to go shopping. I'm going to see if we can take the train to Paris. Imagine that, coming into some English magic school dressed in nothing but the most fashionable, up to date items straight from the Fashion Capital of the world. Well, my world.

The insane supplies listed in the letter have to come from a "Diagon Alley", supposedly located in London. The letter talks about some silly directions involving a pub and some bricks! Maybe Sukiwen will understand.

Wait, will I be able to take Chouette? He must come with me to school, I couldn't bear to leave him!

xEmalia

Thank goodness, Chouette comes too! The letter says I may bring a toad, owl, or cat. What would anyone want with a toad or an owl? Seriously.

The train leaves for London in 30 minutes. J'ai tres nerveux! Maman et Papa aren't coming with me to London, but they're here now. They've given me lots of pictures of home and I know how to change money and such, but I'm still so nervous. Perhaps I'll spot this Hogwarts on the way there! Oh, that would be fun. I wonder what it looks like. I pray it's something magical-looking, but how would they make it look magical without attracting the attention of non-magics? I wonder if Beauxbatons is prettier than Hogwarts. The name sounds much nicer to me, but I'm probably biased.

Oh, Chouette is whining again. Je vais ecriver dans le train!
