Carefully she watched him, processed everything he did and said. She was calculating her odds against him, how easy it would be to steer him wrong. She was certain he was smart, much smarter than she could have hoped and he was smooth with words. He always seemed polite, and she was sure he would seem that way no matter what he said. She knew she'd have to be careful with him. He could ask something that she might think wouldn't be relevant and then she would answer it and he would have her. He just seemed that clever.

She listened to his words. She caught the complement he gave on her name but didn't respond to it. As he pulled out the picture she took it gently to get a closer look. The twin girls in the photo were so innocent looking. She'd have given anything to have been able to look that way. Her childhood had been stolen from her by her drunken, abusive father. There was no way for her to get it back. And as foolish as it was she was almost jealous of the beautiful children. They knew what peace was, had probably never been seriously hit by their parents. "They are very adorable." She agreed with a little smile. Then she realized how rude she was being. She had company, the least she could do was get him something.

"Is there something I can get you to drink, Mr. Smith?" She waited for his response as she handed back the picture. She was avoiding his gaze, or attempting to. It was so strange how much she looked like him. Add two years and a kinder nature and he could be him. Lenna shook off the bad memory with a shudder, wrapping her arms around herself. She didn't want to think of that now, or ever again. It was bad enough it happened once, no need to relive it during the day. Especially when it seemed to find its way into her dreams every night. "Or anything to eat? I can't be sure what we have, but you're welcome to whatever."

K A T R I N AALTAIR
A young woman wandered through the woods, following a deer path that had been worn into the ground. Her shoes made no sound as they moved across the packed dirt. She had wandered the woods ever since she was little. It was her own little escape. She could have navigated the trail in her sleep. Her hands were buried deep in her pockets and her chin and mouth were tucked behind the scarf that wrapped around her neck, keeping out the chilly morning air. Her nose and cheeks were pink on her otherwise pale skin. She made her way along the path, her breathing sounding loud in the otherwise silent forest.

Katrina Altair, known as Kat to her sisters, had woken early that morning to silent screams. The nightmares. They still plagued her sleep, even after all the years that had passed. As she normally did after waking from one of her nightmares, she had dressed and slipped out of the house to wander the woods around their home. It was her place to think. She stopped when she reached the end of the trees. She took a deep breath and exhaled it in the form of a sigh, her warm breath creating a small white fog in the crisp air. She found an empty bench near the small pond and took a seat. With yet another sigh, she leaned back, stretching her legs out in front of her. Her green eyes stared out from the curtain of her brown bangs to focus on the eerily still surface of the pond.

Adele sat at the piano staring out the window. The room was completely dark except for the faint moonbeam illuminating the bench and keys. She shifted her eyes from the iridescent moon to its reflection on the still waters of the pond.

She had awoken suddenly from a nightmare and tiptoed downstairs to this room. This was the place she could think, whether she was playing music or not. She turned from the window and focused her attention on the keys. She placed her hands gently as if they were cradling a small child. Then she began to play. The music flowed through her body and exited through her hands. She didn’t have to memorize anything or even think. It was as if the music was a part of her.

What she was thinking about was the nightmare she had had. She always had the same one. He was there and she was in her room. She sat on her bed, hugging her teddy, tears streaming down her face. In the dream she couldn’t move or even scream. He would move closer and just when the unthinkable was about to happen…BAM! She would wake up.

She stopped thinking and realized she was singing along with her music. As the song came to an end she let her arms rest on the keys as she slouched forward and wept.

Joy made him squirm on the inside as she too admitted that his twin sisters were very adorable. Lyle smiled at her as he placed the picture back in his wallet and absorbed her question. The sensors on his tongue screamed for tea in unison with his stomach. It had been a while since he enjoyed a cup of his tongue's love. "If I may, a cup of tea, please and thank you." Then he placed himself carefully upon the couch. Silently the room fell into his memory. Lyle had always been good at remembering what things looked like. It was how he noticed what items were missing at a crime scene. The smallest disappearance could make the biggest of breakthroughs. Lenna's voice flowed through his head like a tape as he tried to recall all of what she had recently said. There was something he wanted to say, but couldn't remember it. "We told the police all we knew five years ago. There is nothing more here to find or for us to tell you. I wanted to warn you of that before you began your questioning. The only answers you'll get are the ones that have already been given because they are the only truth." The only truth? Lyle's brows furrowed in deep thought. Sometime didn't seem right. Under his breath, his lips feathered his thoughts. "There can really only be one truth. Why would she have to be so specific? Somehow I don't want to believe her, but what am I going to do about it? Shoot her? That's no way to treat a young woman, especially out of your own home."

Seconds felt like hours of thought and nothing came after the equals sign, no conclusions were made with the evidence he was recently given. Lyle refrained from questioning her about the specifics of her speech. The last thing he needed was a defensive person. Nothing ever seemed to go right when victims were defensive around the detectives. So, to combat her concern for being questioned, he chose to take a more neutral approach. "By the sound of it, you seem tired of being questioned. If its alright with you, I'd rather get to know you better. I feel strange when I question people I don't know. I just feel like I have no business asking." A small, awkward smile formed on his lips as he looked over in her direction. Half of him wanted to interrogate her until she spilled and the other half wanted to take things slow. His mother's voice crept into his head. "Haste makes waste, my love. Never rush a person. Share a few things about yourself first." For two seconds, the detective felt mental. Lyle shook his head a little and chuckled. "I'm sorry for appearing at your door randomly. I should have at least called first."

"Calling first would have been polite, but it isn't as if most of us have things to do during the weekend. There's no school, not much work to be done..." She shrugged lightly. "I'll go ahead and start the tea." She disappeared into the kitchen scolding herself for beginning to ramble. She didn't have to tell him that last part, why did she? After starting the tea Lenna went back into the living room, sitting down next to him. The bad memory resurface when she looked at him. A dark room, a shadowy figure, her screaming in pain and fear, the feeling of hopelessness.... No! She shuddered away from those thoughts, closing her eyes against them. The memories of her father were bad enough she didn't need these too. "So you want to get to know me better?" She asked slowly. "What would you like to know?"

There wasn't much she would be willing to tell him, but perhaps he might stumble upon a question she wouldn't be afraid of answering. As long as it was far away from her father, mother, past relationships, and her sisters she would answer it. That limited his choice in question but she didn't care. It was a take it or leave it kind of thing. It was the only way she would answer his questions.

Sunlight pierced through the darkness of Noah's apartment through partially-opened blinds, casting a slight spotlight on the man lying on the poorly-made bed. His eyes shot open immediately, yet he made no effort whatsoever to rise.

"You know," Noah heard in the corner of his mind, "Staying in bed all day long can lead to bedsores."

"And you know," Noah whispered, knowing full well by now that nobody ever heard him unless he took over, "That I don't want to hear anything you have to say."

Despite this dismissal of his other half, Noah rose out of his bed and reached for the blinds, fully raising them and flooding the apartment in bright light, causing him to look away and eliciting a muffled groan from him. As his eyes adjusted to the light, he couldn't help but let out a small sigh at the sight of his disheveled abode. He made his way into a small bathroom, and opened a mirrored shelf door to reveal multiple bottles identical in both size, type and color. Taking one bottle and popping off the white top, he tapped the tip to cause two red-and-black capsules to fall into the palm of his hand. Raising his hand to his mouth, he put the pills in his mouth and swallowed them almost immediately, then capped the bottle and placed it back in the cabinet. Closing the shelf door, he saw not his reflection in the mirror, but one like his: almost identical in every feature, except without spectacles, vibrant red eyes instead of Noah's pale green, and a sinister-looking smirk contrasting his small, world-weary frown.

"Oh, don't talk like that!" the other Noah said, seeming to restrain some kind of sick laughter. "Is that really any way to talk to your brother?"

"You're not Eden," Noah said, voice not raised, but fists clenched so tightly that his knuckles were completely white. "Eden was violent, but he never would have done what you did. You destroyed my entire world."

"Don't be such a drama queen." his 'Eden' said, letting out a childish giggle, "There are plenty of people who have had worse lives than you. Also..." Eden paused, his smirk growing into a large, feral-looking grin. "You're the one that pulled the trigger."

In almost an instant, Noah's fist flew at the Eden in the mirror, causing 'him' to take on a look of shock as the mirror shattered under Noah's hand. Noah kept his stoic expression, and kept his hand there for what seemed like an eternity. He finally withdrew his hand from the shattered glass, looking at his shredded, bleeding knuckles with a look of disinterest. Looking back at the mirror, even through the spiders-web of cracks on its surface, he could make out his own reflection in the mirror.
Breathing in slow, shallow puffs of air, he could hear Eden giving a low whistle in the depths of his mind.

"Somebody needs to work on their anger issues. But that's not going to work, Noah." Eden then began to slowly chuckle, which quickly began to rise into a high laughter. "Irene and the girls were just the beginning. We're going to do a lot together, my dear brother. I'm going to make you paint this whole damn city red!

As Eden shrieked with depraved laughter within his head, Noah's hands shook with combined sorrow and rage. Backing up against the bathroom wall, he slid down and sat down with his face cupped in his blood-spattered hands. And as Eden continued to laugh and laugh, Noah raised his head with dual streams of tears cascadind down his cheeks, and with nothing else to possibly to to drown out the laughter, he raised his face the ceiling and screamed. Not knowing if anybody could hear him and honestly not caring, Noah screamed, a sound thick with fury, hopelessness, and unrelenting grief.

Adele sat up finally, wiping her eyes and sniffing. She tried to pull herself together before she left, in case anyone saw her. She walked to the door of the room and quietly opened it peeking out and noticing her sister first. She walked over to her as she came out of the kitchen and cocked her head to the side. Why had she made tea for two? She turned and noticed him blushing deeply and looking down. She hadn't meant top interuppt.

Lyle's insides tensed up as he replayed her words within him. "There's no school, not much work to be done..." No school? That made him dizzy. No work? Puzzled skipped into his mind. How could any of them afford to not go to school? Education in this age was far to important to pass up. Lyle watched as she walked off towards the kitchen, waiting until she was out of sight to fix his unruly glasses. It was as if he were trying to pretend that the frames were never out of place. When she returned, he greeted her with a smile and turned a little more towards her. "I would like to know many things. Lenna, if I may, I just met you a few minutes ago at the door. I'd like to know many things about you. You seem like a very interesting woman. Its just that asking you questions about yourself would make it seem like I'm one of those detectives who is trying to get on your insides just to leave you when the case is solved. I'm no information fiend. Here, I'll show you." Lyle pulled out his phone and opened up his cellular address book, offering her to take a look. It was 50% of the proof he had to show her at this point. "There are probably around sixty numbers in there. I make it a goal to call at least five of the ones I don't see everyday each day. Sometimes I even visit their homes. Come to think of it, I'm suppose to help Mrs. Jamison bake brownies for a bake sale two days from now. Most of these people are my former "victims", for a lack of a better word, that have become my friends. Then there's the precinct and my family. My point is that I don't just disappear on people I help, unlike the others who only want to become someone famous. Fame is having a widespread reputation whether it be of a good nature or a bad one. I am famous to the people I love and care for. That's all that really matters to me." Lyle ran his fingers through his hair, remembering that he forgot to comb it this morning. It was also something he did when he went from completely open to shy in a matter of seconds. Lyle was a weird detective. "Sorry. I have this tendency to comb my hair with my fingers when I go from social to shy. I don't know why it happens. I'm just weird. Umm...tries to make conversation." Tries to make conversation? It was as if he were speaking an action and forgetting to add the asterisks. "You're 19?"

Lenna was amazed at how many numbers were in his phone. It was all the proof she needed to know what he spoke was truth. He wasn't just there to solve the case, he was also wanting to get to know her. Not smart, Lenna. She cautioned herself. Just because he pretends to be nice and kind doesn't necessarily mean he is. Remember Jacob? The name came to her mind unbidden and she sighed without realizing. How she wished she didn't remember. She knew better than to let her guard down, had learned to keep her walls around her, since they were the only thing that stopped her from falling apart. but she couldn't help but like Lyle. He just seemed so sincere. So he's a good liar. Again her mind couldn't let it rest. It was as if she couldn't trust anyone. Her own thoughts wouldn't let her. "Yeah." She responded slowly to his question. It doesn't necessarily mean he's lying. She thought, forcing herself to give him a chance. But she knew she would have to be careful. "I'm nineteen. And you're twenty-one. Pretty young for a detective. The ones who worked on our case before were at least in their late thirties."

It wasn't until noon that Noah had recovered from his episode, and he had long since bandaged his foolishly self-inflicted hand injury. From his seat at the foot of his bed, he looked into the bathroom at his cracked mirror, and even through the lattice work of cracks, he could tell it was his own face he saw. Rising from the bed, he once more proceeded into the bathroom, stepping gingerly around the few shards of glass that managed to chip off of the mirror and hit the floor. Slipping his glasses off, he placed them near the sink faucet while reaching for a small case on the edge of the sink. Opening the case, he took out a set of contact lenses and delicately slipped them onto both eyes. Looking in a largely-intact section of the mirror, he looked to see that the lenses had made his normally light-green eyes a dark shade of blue. After blinking once or twice to make sure they wouldn't slip, Noah reached for an aerosol can left within the bowl of the sink and began spraying his hair. The spray stained his hair a light shade of yellow, and he continued with the spray until every hair on his head was pale blond in color. Reaching his hands up to his head, he began smoothing his hair back by hand, none of the dye smearing as he worked his hair back against his head. Returning his gaze to the mirror piece, he gave a slight sigh as he saw his reflection: his green eyes and messy black hair were replaced by a foreign appearence of blue eyes and slicked blond hair. Exiting the bathroom, he crossed the apartment to a small dresser, reached in and grabbed a fresh shirt, and slipped it on without bothering to close the dresser cabinet. Sitting back down on the edge of his bed, Noah began to put on a pair of shoes as Eden's voice whispeded in his mental ear.

"For a man consumed with guilt over the atrocities 'he' committed against his family," the near-silent voice said in a mocking tone, "You sure do take extensive measures to make sure the police don't recognize you."

"I want to die alone." Noah whispered, energy almost spent from his previous fit of grief. "If I go to jail, you'll just end up killing the other convicts. Even criminals don't deserve what you do."

Waiting silently for Eden to retort, five minutes passed before Noah realized he must have gone 'back to sleep'. Letting out a long, slow sigh, he got to his feet and opened the door of his apartment to leave. Shielding his eyes from the sun briefly, he shut the door behind him and proceeded to exit the apartment complex and follow the sidewalk toward the suburbs of the city, doing his best to ensure he did nothing to attract attention to himself.

A shaft of bright light filtered through the blinds in her room. Groaning she shifted beneath the white sheets of her bed, twisting her body so she could see the clock. Noon! The eldest Altair sister jumped up, her black hair flying about as the sudden movement rippled into the stale air. Grimacing, she mumbled incoherently as she grabbed the bed post to help her up. Charlotte had found with her many years of being with Sickle Cell was that getting out of bed in the morning was the worst time. As circulation increased, so did the deep ripping sensations. Time for medicine. As always, she trudged into her small separate bathroom. She stood awkwardly in front of the mirror, her white night gown mishap Ned, clung to her body in odd directions. With out a care to the delicate fabric, she popped a few pills in her mouth and swallowed them dry. No need to waste time filling up a glass of water.

Her daily routine was finally finished as she shimmied into a white wife beater and distressed pair of dark blue jeans. Today she would be helping the freshmen students with abstract painting. Not a good day to wear good clothes. Lots of throwing permanent paint. Placing a quiet smile on her face for the benefit of her sisters, also to distract from how oddly late she had awoken, Charlotte fluidly took the steps in stride.

But before the usual, dilapidated 'good morning' could leave her faded lips, she spotted a guy at their kitchen table. Turning to Lena she shot her a look of interest, a brow raising. "Morning." Her blue eyes jumped between the two before going and grabbing a cup of tea herself. Since her usual seat was taken, Lottie choose to just lurk against the counter. "Who's your friend Lena?" She smiled towards the man, making sure not to seem surprised. After all Lena rarely ever brought friends over, then again, none of them did.

Due to her medication, Lottie never really had an appetite, and she was glad her sisters didn't have much of one either. That way, it didn't look suspicious. She had taken extra measures to hide her illness, like giving the doctor a special number to call and to always use a call blocker. Also, her medication was hidden and the bottles were disguised as something else. Lottie just hoped to god her sisters didn't decide to go rummaging one day and see them as vitamins. If they were to get cut their blood would not clot! Heaven forbid for something to happen to them. Charlotte would die from shame and guilt. And when the pain would start up, she had to leave the room to finish some of her art or go get some more groceries. Charlotte did not want them to worry, nor to get angry with her. Plus it would bring up more questions about the past.

Sipping innocently at her drink she returned to reality, feeling the medicine swirl in her stomach. Almost an out of body experience. But her attention was more on the man across from her. He looked fairly young, possibly her age seeing as he seemed to have that look of an older sibling. She could always tell that about someone. Yet, he was also nervous. About what? Were the three girls that intimidating? Placing another polite smile on her lips she turned back to Lena.

Lyle blushed and looked down, rustling the hair on his head with his hand. The last thing he ever felt was "young". Still, it wasn't strange to hear from her. "Heh, they never fail to notice." The sentence echoed in his mind, making him fail to respond for quite some time. He was a statue for a whole twenty seconds before reality thwacked him in the frontal lobe and woke him up. Lifting his head up, Lyle looked to her with a smile. "Yeah. Not many young people make it as a detective. They usually are much older and have children and a wife. I'm just a singular twenty two year old, the most unlikely of candidates to be detective without fame. Does my age bother you?" The question made his eyes grow slightly more wide than normal and that's when he realized his glasses had slid all the way down to the tip of his nose. If he wasn't wearing such modern clothes he could have easily resembled a librarian. Lyle pushed his glasses up his nose with an index finger and then combed his hair back into place. The one good think about short hair was that your fingers were enough to manage it. Of course, he always combed his hair in the morning with a real comb.

"No," she replied slowly. It was true, it didn't bother her. It actually made her feel more comfortable. Sure, he was three years older than her, but it really was better than the men who were ten or so years older. She hated them around. Not only because they asked too many questions, but also because she saw the ways she watched her and her sisters. She didn't like it at all.

Lenna noticed the way he mentioned he was single. Why would he tel her that? Maybe it wouldn't hurt to ask about it. She was allowed to question the detective, right? "So you're not in a relationship?" She made the question out innocently. When she heard the kettle go off, she grabbed the tea and poured it into two cups, bringing one to him when she was done. Another stab of pain and faint nostalgia hit her when she brushed his fingers accidentally when she handed him the glass. "Sorry." She apologized immediately, almost as if it was an impulse, and it was. She had had to learn to apologize fast or she would have been in serious trouble. It was no longer that place or time, but she couldn't break the habit.

Suddenly, the detective felt a different pair of eyes crawl upon the room. It was one of those things that detectives learned to have after being shot at a couple times on crime scenes. This guy found it to be second nature. Responding to the new presence, Lyle's eyes darted over to Charlotte after hearing Lenna's question at the same time his fingers glided quickly to the gun at his side. That was when he realized that the person he felt wasn't some criminal trying to kill him. This instance was proof that Lyle was still shaken up by the fact that he was forced to take their case. Stress bundled up around his lungs as he tried to hold in his distress. It felt so odd to be asked about his personal life at the same time one of the other sisters popped in to say the strange "good morning" of the afternoon. Like rouge on an stage performer, a blush clotted his pores as he quickly stood up and reluctantly met her eyes with his. Despite the oddness of the situation, Lenna's sister still deserved a reciprocated,"Good morning to you also", of the afternoon. "Apologies. My name is Lyle Smith. I'm a twenty two year old...male who is old brother to twin sisters, Domenica and Lillium." The trailing laughter was the result of the awkwardness that penetrated his mind. Lyle knew that telling her of his occupation would make the situation turn sour. No one liked it when they woke up to a detective in their home, especially that one woman who ran him out the front door with a rifle. There was still that one question he had to answer for Lenna. Lyle nodded his head at her politely and then returned to his spot on the couch. That's when he felt the soft touch of her skin against his fingers that was followed with an apology. The detective smiled. "No need to be sorry. Its fine. Thank you for the tea." Filing away thoughts, his mind held on to the instance and stored it in his important memories bin. Lyle looked to Charlotte after taking a sip of his tea. Then his vision traveled back to Lenna with a sense of urgency. "Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't answer your question. Yes, I am not in a relationship. Apparently, girls aren't interested in a caring and devoted male. They'd rather hop in the cars of jerks who'll get what they want, for lack of a better euphemism, and then leave the next morning. That instance is the sole reason why I try to stay away from rape cases. Some of these girls really bring it on to themselves. Others...the others consist of genuine women who fall in the paws of clever actors. They only play the part of loving boyfriend until they're refused. I'm sorry if this topic disturbs you or delivers negative feelings to you. I mean no harm here. Its just that I figured I'd tell you before you start asking me questions." Soon after speaking, Lyle realized that he had almost completely given away his occupation. It was time to do damage control. Quickly, thoughts boiled in his head and a few seconds later he was skipping onto a more positive aspect of the topic at hand. "Oh, and girl's don't like my dog. They think he's ugly and disgusting. Poor Ollie. All he does to communicate is chatter his teeth, shiver, and skitter quickly around. I'll admit, he can be frightening at night, but you get used to it after a while. Most of the girls I run into don't understand that. Maybe I just have bad luck with females. What about you two? Are either of you in a relationship? Apologies if my question is out of line."

Tension. Slid. A ruffle of fabric.

Charlotte went rigid for a moment, as she adjusted to the new comer. The way he introduced himself was odd and abrupt. Though she had be right about the older sibling thing.

Smiling forcefully, Charlotte downed her tea within a matter of moments. Her pulse throbbed dully in her veins and she had to keep from cringing.

Ten more minutes. The phrase was chanted over and over and over again in her mind. It was the moment in which the sweet pace of release of release would numb the radiating pain and silence her thudding heart. For at least another six hours. Gnawing at her lower lip, the eldest set her cup silently into the sink. How odd this new stranger was. First he talks about rape cases and then his decrepit dog. Shaking her head slightly, she had half the sense to tell her sister Lenna to leave the room.

Taking a seat at the table with little less of a care to how awkwardly close everyone was, she leaned back comfortably. Her finger just couldn't touch the right word. Reporter...No. Cop....No.

At one fit the description that raked through her exhausted mind. 12:24 pm. Three minutes until she had to leave. Well, she had her work cut out for her. Or she could call in sick. Her employer would understand of course. After a recent, terrible episode, she had to explain her condition. Charlotte had hated the initial few days after their conversation. Opening doors for her, taking some of her classes, picking up books etc. Groaning inwardly, maybe she didn't want to call in sick after all, her boss might take it as something serious.

There was to much to consider and to little of time. She would stick to the same idea she had when she had awoken. Even though dressing for the occasion of the class, she wasn't prepared to seem happy and up beat.

"Lenna." She glanced towards her younger sister. "I think I'm going to call in sick today." She furrowed her brow, completely ignoring the new presence for the time being. 12:28pm. She was already light, technically that is.

"Don't worry, I just need a mental health day." Smiling weakly she turned her crystal, un biased gaze to Lyle. "Its a pleasure to meet you Mr. Smith. I'm sure you love your sisters dearly as I do mine." She crossed her legs. Instantly, Charlotte felt the pieces fall together. No one took her as an idiot.

He introduced himself as if he would a case. He spoke of past experiences of relationships that ended sour and needed interference of the law. Plus, he was fidgeting to no end.

"So, tell me about your line of work. Detective." She smiled sweetly, her gaze the same. Charlotte heard everyone out and rarely sent them packing unless they intruded into personal realms uncomfortable to her and or the other girls of the house hold. But in the beginning she was hardly as forgiving, she hated them. For reminding them over and over about something that was now in the past. If they really wanted to make progress, then they should just go find her father. He had all the answers. And it would put peace of mind into their household. Dusting herself out of her own mind, she quickly answered his question. "And no. I am not in a relationship."

12:32pm. To late to even try and go to work. The lunch rush had just started. Charlotte hated traffic.
