Spoot-maker Gwion Vaughn The republican VP pick is even more WTF than the democratic choice of Biden. Sure Sarah Palin is female and therefore a blatant play for the rabid Hillary vote, but she's anti-choice and from Alaska, which, while huge is the 47th least populous state. She also lied about her involvement in the "bridge to nowhere" in her acceptance speech. Charming. He might as well have gone ahead and just picked Anne Coulter. The outright attempt to lure Hillary voters this way seems really condescending to me. Do they honestly think just having two x chromosomes makes up for the ultra right wing political views? Do they honestly think democratic women are this stupid? She's worse than that. She's anti-choice even in cases of rape/incest/endangerment of the mother, believes creationism should be taught in all schools, believes in abstinence only sex education despite having a pregnant teen daughter who is out of wedlock, believes in drilling for oil in Alaska, believes there is no such thing as mankind caused global warming, is staunchly pro-gun, opposes same sex marriage to the extent of wanting to modify the constitution to ban state health benefits for same sex couples and banning gay marriage, supports Bush's idea on the war on terrorism and Iraq, thinks polar bears have decreased in population because of conservation and wants them removed from the endangered species list, supports aerial wolf hunting and finally supports a completely free market ******** me rigid if you can find a more stupid person to vote for. If you think shes nuts, you should seriously check out Leslie Unruh. She is the most batshit insane lifer I have ever met, and believes that condoms and birth control are murder. Here is her arguing about a BC pill that came out that makes it so women can stop having periods if they so choose: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOVhyXHmuS4

Teens are naturally curious, and since sex is so taboo, they burn with curiosity over why the hell it's so bad. They will try it out either way, so abstinence only education is bad for the health of teens and the future generations that had to grow up with a teenage mom. I kinda went through the same thing. When I was a wee babe, my mother couldn't even afford a crib for me, and I slept in a drawer. She had me when she wasn't financially prepared. I wouldn't wish poverty on anyone.

Seriously, if you missed tonight's Daily Show, catch a rerun or go check out Comedy Central's site. It was one of the most biting things I've seen on TV, possibly ever. Their convention coverage focused on the Larry Craig Men's room in the Minneapolis-St. Paul's Men's room. Yes, that men's room. In the airport in the city the convention is in. *Facepalm* It also features John Stewart asking really tough questions about Palin including stuff about her stance og forcing women who were raped to carry to term. His far right guest kept trying to soft pedal, and Stewart kept nailing him to the wall. It was beautiful. They also had a collection of right wing pundits doing about faces on various issues. If you only ever watch one of their shows, watch this one. Colbert was pretty good, but completely upstaged by Stewart.
BTW, I agree with [info]karjack that attacking Bristol Palin is beyond not cool. Choice means choice and on top of that, I was against jerks attacking teenaged Chelsea Clinton's looks back in the day; I'm against making Bristol the whipping girl for both sides. She's 17 and she didn't choose to go into politics, so lay off folks. Attacking her Mom for being against sex ed in schools during the rising teen pregnancy epidemic? Fair game as long as we don't make it personal. Point out that the lowest numbers for teen pregnancy in my lifetime were under the Clintons and have been rising steadily under abstinence only? Go to town. Highlight Sarah Palin's belief that there is no reason ever to have an abortion even if someone is raped or the victim of incest? Completely fair game. Poking fun of her seventeen year old daughter, or as I've heard a couple of times, her child with down syndrome? Way the ******** out of line. Let's take the high road folks and leave the creepy stuff to folks on the Religious Right.

Why is it that its completely acceptable for Republicans like Gingrich and John Mccain to cheat on desperately ill wives? There is no outcry or outrage from the people in their party who go around trying to punish gay folk while shrieking "family values." I've wondered this for years. It's political death for a Democrat, a member of the party of sex, drugs, and rock and roll to cheat, but the party of fundamentalists is fine with any cruelty to one's spouse as long as it's a heterosexual being so disgraced. Whence this double standard? I despise Edwards for things like snapping a misogynist comment during the campaign and for backstabbing his wife and generally betraying his party by running knowing that his skeleton was waiting to jump out of the closet, but he didn't leave his wife while she was in the hospital with cancer (Gingrich) or leave his first wife for being disabled after cheating on her for months. I'm not getting why the response is always so much harsher for Democrats. Shouldn't it be equal or worse for Republicans given all their talk of "traditional Christian values?"
Again, I'm not even vaguely condoning Edwards, just boggling at the lack of parity.

Back when Washington let independents vote in the republican primaries, I voted for McCain in a primary against W. I still think he couldn't have done worse for the last eight years, but I have gradually lost faith that he'd have done better. I used to respect him and now he fills me with horror as he nakedly grabs for power, exposing a depth of hypocrisy that horrifies me. For example, how dare a man who isn't sure how many houses he own attack a working class couple who earned everything they have for being out of touch with ordinary Americans while claiming the recession and mortgage crisis are all in our heads. It's like he's trying to compete with W in the "Lack of self awareness" Olympics.
Also, apparently Sarah Palin's involvement in the Alaska separatist Party and her creepy antisemitism just hit the national news.

I don't see what is so bad about wanting to secede from the union. Its not connected by any border as far as I know.
It falls under the right to self determination, not anti-Americanism.

I used to respect this friend. Eeeeew! I know it's the tip of the iceberg. How sad is it that while watching Guiliani's speech I started laughing like a loon when he started whining about how people aren't talking enough about 9/11? It's like he's become some sort of 9/11 parrot. His campaign has so trivialized the event that I get no emotional response to him repeating it besides amusement about his predictability and his use of it in inappropriate places to curtail debate. it's become a comedy refrain instead of a solemn event. I realize that this in itself is a tragedy. Both Bush and Guiliani tend to start chanting 9-11 when anyone asks a tough question that they don't want to answer and have been doing it so long it's lost all meaning. If I don't laugh I'd cry, really. I've noticed McCain and his supporters have started doing this with P.O.W.. Mccain's personal history of captivity and torture held so much more power when it was understated. now that they drag it out in response to criticism and to cut off all debate, it looks like a crutch. It trivializes what must have been a horrific experience by turning it into a way to weasel out of adult conversations about policy.

Westmoreland calls the Obama's "uppity." none of this mamby pamby code word stuff for him: http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/westmoreland-calls-obama-uppity-2008-09-04.html
Yes, it's despicable, but at least he's got the courage to be open in his racism, which is more than most of the Republicans can seem to manage. It is so much easier to fight it when it's open.
Seriously, this guy is rolling back Georgia's PR to the 1960's.
