In the miniseries 10th Kingdom, there's a guy that's a "wolf" and he's sort of a werewolf. He's always sort of wolf-ish but he gets more so around the full moon. He never completely turns into a wolf, but he goes crazy and his teeth turn into fangs and his eyes turn yellow, that sort of thing. That's sort of the ideal werewolf in my mind.
As far as vampires go, I don't think they've become too sexy. Stephenie Meyer's vampires were too sexy. Buffy had plenty scary vampires and so did most of the other vampire movies that have been coming out. The creatures in I Am Legend were supposed to be vampires (a very different take, obviously) and they were horrifying.
My vote: Vampires win, hands down.
