Cart nodded absently. {I do sort of miss Khala and Old Silverback. And Jabari, and the others we left behind...I guess we'll see 'em again someday, though.} Under his light veil of melancholy throbbed an excited pulse of joy like a bright star and a rebirth of his old curiosity and sense of adventure...the world beckoned to him, wanted to make him its own. He still wanted to see everything: every tree, every mountaintop, every lake and stream. But it was different now...now he wanted to see it with Freckles. {Freckles...there's a whole world out there...I've always wanted to see it. With you.}

Freckles sighed happily. "Then we shall see it together," she said, "all of it there is to see. And then, when we're old and tired, we can go back to see Old Silverback and Khala and the rest, and we'll tell them about our travels, and all of the young ones will leave the cave, eager to experience even half of the marvels we saw." Her eyes glittered merrily as she looked off to the sea, picturing her and Cart standing triumphant, together. Together, together. Oh, how she liked the sound of that!

Cart nodded. "I can hardly wait, Freckles!" he murmured, gazing off westward as she did. "We'll see the sunset on the great waves of the far-off sea and see the sun rise on the glaciers in hidden mountain valleys to the east. No dragon in all the history of dragons will ever have seen as much as we have seen together, Freckles--because no dragons' eyes have ever been as open as ours to the beauty and wonder of the world." He felt her warmth against his side even in the cool evening breeze as he wrapped his tail tighter around her in this perfect, clear night, the stars watching their love from the endless vault of the heavens.

Her man! He was really going to do it, he was going to see it all. And when he spoke, and she looked into his eyes, she could see everything he did. Then and there, she vowed that come what may, she would make sure he saw it, every last bit. He would be the greatest explorer that ever lived, and she only felt privileged to be there by his side. She nibbled on his ear delicately, shivering with delight to feel his tail around her. "We'll see it all!" she breathed. "All there it is to see, and it shall be ours, ours to take and carry with us, our memories and thoughts and dreams. We'll see more than any other dragon, see things no other dragon has ever seen!" She grinned impishly, even though she knew he couldn't see. "We'll even see where the sky meets the earth, and we'll sit there the way we're sitting now, and catch the stars on our tongues." She giggled at the thought, and went back to nibbling on his ear.

Cart jumped a little as Freckles nibbled his ear. It made him feel ticklish for some reason. He smiled and gazed into Freckles's deep, brown eyes. "Yes, and if it gets cold, we'll catch shooting stars together to keep us warm, and the ice on the comets will melt on our tongues at the end of the sky and the earth." Tonight, anything seemed possible--he could almost hear the roar of the sea and feel the cool touch of snow on eastern peaks. They would see everything, even places that no one thought existed. And the best part was that no one would see it but them. The whole world could be their special place, every mountain, every beach, sand dune, and forest. Theirs for eternity.

"Tonight, though," Freckles said slowly, "all we have is each other." She looked at him, nervous and anxious, but couldn't really hold back. She leaned in against him, nearly knocking him over. Hers, all hers, she thought to herself as she breathed in his scent. And he smelled wonderful. "Each other and the sky," she murmured happily.
It would be a long night.
