Make sure what you're posting makes sense! You should carefully re-read previous posts during and after coming up with your own reply. This helps keep you from accidentally confusing the facts and messing up the topic. It causes problems when all the opponents have been defeated but you post that you're still fighting because you misread.

Make sure you're properly using your spells by going back to the shops when posting to re-read the description of the spell.

One way to make your posts longer and better quality is to try and add more adjectives and adverbs to describe objects and actions. Adjectives are descriptive words for objects, like "blue," or "strong." Adverbs are descriptive words for actions, like "quickly" or "silently."

Try building a mood for your character by playing with words. There are some words though with the same meaning that pique the interest of others more. Sometimes making use of euphemisms, similes and personifications further highlight your character's projection towards the people around him and in the long run allow you to lengthen your posts. Feel free to abuse your thesaurus

before:
She wore a green outfit as she took a walk that night.
after:
Her emerald garb was toyed with by the wind's ferocious breath as she took a stroll that wintery evening.

Keep track of how many times you say your own name in a post. I've seen some posts where every paragraph and / or sentence starts with the characters name! This is very bad for readability, and the reason that pronouns like "he" and "she" were invented.

I use the purple thing in all of my essays. it makes it sound smarter and last longer. (mainly becuase my teachers aren't smart enough to realise that i'm just creating clutter)

Make sure that you actually know the meaning of the words you use. If you use a large word that sounds appropriate, but you can't think of how to explain what it means to someone else, just quickly look it up to be certain. You can use sites like Dictionary.com for checking.

Details are the stuff quality posts are made of, but there is such a thing as too much. Sometimes people can write a lot of detail about something, but those details don't add to the story or the enjoyment of reading. This is called purple prose, writings that are there seemingly just to add fluff. This can make your post cumbersome and dull to read. It is good to describe your surroundings, for example, but spending a paragraph talking about the way the gravel crunches under your shoes is overkill. Try to find a happy medium between good and excess. The first is a post with a detailed look at purple prose, what it is, and how to avoid it.

Don't quote entire paragraphs or even sentences from the post before yours. Reading a topic is like reading a chapter in a story story, and each post is a new page. You don't want to read each page twice. Instead, if there is something relevant from the previous post that you want to acknowledge in yours, paraphrase or rewrite it in a way that is uniquely yours and isn't repetitive.

Thesaurus Abuse
A large and varied vocabulary is great, but writing should not be a contest about displaying the biggest and fanciest words you know. Some tips to keep in mind when using advanced vocabulary:
1. Make sure you understand the words you are using. Visit Dictionary.com or Merriam-Webster.com and look up the definition of your word if you are anything less than absolutely certain you know its meaning. Sometimes the meaning of your impressive word of choice may be similar to what you intend to use it for, but the way you choose to use it is not proper - or worse, it gives your sentence an entirely different meaning than what you intended.
2. If you question the use of a big word, it's best to only use it if the bigger word communicates an idea better than a normal word. Sometimes smaller words can be the best, clearest way to get your point across.
3. Remember that people want to be able to understand what you're writing. It's hard to stay interested when you have to bust out a dictionary for every sentence.

Excessive Length
Length is generally a sign of a more developed post, but there are ways for it to be a bad thing too. Excessive length comes in a few different forms.
1. Quality Over Quantity-----
It is impressive to be able to churn out a 2,000 word post, but word count alone is not a good reason for making a long post. First and foremost, it is the quality of your writing that should be your priority. It is much preferred to read 300 quality words than 1,000 words that have been forced out just to make the post longer. To me, the most desirable average length of a post is between 400 and 500 words unless there is a lot of action that needs to be addressed.
2. Irrelevant Content ------
We encourage each writer to build background stories and have deep thoughts and motivations behind their actions, but your RP topics with others are not always the proper place to write out all of these thoughts. It is very difficult to read a long post where half of its entirety does not relate to the events taking place around the people with whom you are posting. When you post in a topic with other people, you should only include things relevant to the events at hand. Memories, flashbacks, and long narrations about internal thoughts will lose the attention of the people you're posting with. Before you write a long section, think to yourself "is this going to contribute to the topic I'm currently in?" And "how is this information important to other readers?" If something doesn't fit into your RP post, but you want to write it out and feel the information is important to your character development, consider writing it in the journal or history forums instead.
3. Knowing When Enough is Enough --------
When a post reaches 1,500 words, that should be a warning sign to hit the brakes and start reconsidering some of your content. Make sure you are following the two length guidelines above. 2,000 words is pushing the limit of a reasonable maximum if the other people in your topic are not matching your length. Remember that RPing is different from writing your own short story or book, you need to take other people into consideration when posting.

Alright everyone please feel free to add hints and tips for any Newbie that is coming in to RP with anyone. Or anything that could help people improve their skills

I want some advice. So far the people I've rped with haven't minded my style of magic, but I can see my style being a potential problem. When I cast spells, they automatically take effect. Unless a particular spell is a projectile spell or a spell that can be resisted by a strong will or something similar, I really don't see how else magic would work. I cast the spell, it takes effect, my opponent has to figure out a good response to deal with it. If there is another reasonable way to rp magic I would like to know for reference.
