Arrival

Five minutes until arrival, five minutes...

Anjali looked up and yawned a bit, stretching out her legs in front of her as far as they could go - which wasn't much, but enough to get some of the cramps out. She'd been on a plane for most of the past two days, and now this... and she was MORE than ready to get back on good solid ground. And to her new home.

She folded the magazine she'd been looking at and put it in her bag, realizing that she didn't remember the contents one bit. It had been more like idly turning the pages because they were there rather than actually absorbing any of the information. Anjali leaned against the window and tried to see out... and there it was, the water changing color as the depth decreased, subtly. The shadows of reefs and forest-sized seaweed clumps loomed, and then -

The Island.

Anjali let out a sigh as she saw it. A dramatic approach, but it was obvious that the human intrusion was recent and sudden. All prefab, no doubt... though she couldn't quite tell from the air, she was willing to bet on it. Clearcut, too, she was sure.

Well. That was why they'd hired her here, right? To take charge and do what only an expert groundskeeper could do. Soon she'd have those institutional complexes all but melting into the landscape.

Quite a challenge to look forward to. She grinned and settled back in her seat as the helicopter began its descent.

Meanwhile, Sabin had been waiting on the tarmac for the supposed new arrival. James was running a bit late with this one, and he couldn't afford to be late to meet and greet the subjects anymore. Not with the number of current subjects already on the Island who might get it into their heads to scare the newcomers.

He had been sitting on the front hood of the everpresent jeep, his legs crossed in front of him, and flipping through one of his books from his personal collection that he had had shipped. This one, a rather thick volume on European myths and monsters.

As the helicopter's thumping noise reached his ears, he looked up, sliding the sunglasses farther up his rather long nose and smiled, curious to see what this Anj... Anjali - that was it - looked like.

As the helicopter touched down onto the steaming tarmac, the trees' branches tossed and blown back under the force of the spinning rotors, he stayed where he was, smiling an ambiguous smile and wearing clashing red bermuda shorts with a lime green shirt that had little orange sailboats on it.

He set down the book onto the hood and hopped off the hood, stepping forward to meet her.

"Welcome!" He grinned. "You must be Anjali!"

Anjali shouldered her messenger bag and hopped onto the tarmac, wincing as the long inactivity sent pins and needles shooting up one leg. But she recovered well, and walked mostly steadily towards Sabin, one hand held out.

Gods above, what an outfit. But, well. She hadn't been hired for fashion advice.

"Yes, I am Anjali Frangipani, and you are?" she asked, her voice smooth with a slight British accent, and the delicate lilt that marked her as being from India.

"Ah, where are my manners" He apologized, removing the glasses and hooking them in his shirt pocket as he extended his other hand. "My name is Sabin Duvert" he explained - his own voice hinting at a mostly diluted French accent.

"I''m one of Doctor Moreau''s associates, and was requested to meet you here, show you around, and make sure that all the paperwork and such is in order." He gesticulated as he glanced to the helicopter. "And of course" he said with a dashing smile "Help you with your baggage. I see you came equipped!"

"Well, I am setting up residence here... perhaps permanently, judging by the look of things." Anjali frowned at the roofs she could see over the jungle. "But I shall have to wait and see." She bowed slightly to Sabin. "I appreciate your greeting and your help. Thank you. There are three large suitcases and a smaller duffel in the plane, and two plant boxes. Please be careful with those... they are fragile. I assume your - our - employers already have sufficient equipment here? I did not bring any of my own. I hardly relished explaining to the American government why I wished to bring sharp gardening tools onto their airplanes."

Sabin nodded. "Of course. While baggage handling isn't normalllly in my job description, I've been making an exception here for the Doctor. We're admittedly a bit understaffed at the moment - but that's one reason that you're here now. We wanted a landscaper to be able to adjust the Island to the way it needed to be before we get into full operation" he explained as he went after the largest of the bags with barely a grunt.

In a testament to his genuinity, he was indeed careful as he settled the bag deftly into the backseat and made sure it was snug before going for the second.

"And we have tried to procure the basic supplies - I'll show you where you can find those. And if you discover yourself lacking anything that you need, you have but to ask and we will be sure to order the requisite supplies" he explained, continuing to load the jeep. "It is a pity about the amount of hassle associated with airtravel now a days" He sympathized.

Finally, he loaded the plant boxes carefully, packing around them with some of the other baggage.

"I'm going to drive you to the laboratories first. There's been a small outbreak of Dengue fever around these Islands, and while it probably wouldn't kill you, I'm certain that you would rather be spared its unpleasantries."

"Thank you very much," Anjali said appreciatively, waiting awkwardly while Sabin moved the large bags. Really, she was much more tired than she appeared, and the first blinks of jet lag were beginning to hit her, but she had to remain professional.

She could fall over once she got to the safety of her new residence.

"Ah, a tropical fever? I may already be inoculated against such things. They're not uncommon in India," she said, climbing into the front seat of the jeep despite her legs protesting being bent up to sit down again. "I brought my medical records, so I am sure your resident physician can ascertain that." She patted her messenger bag.

As soon as he finished, Sabin opened the passenger side of the jeep. "Your chariot awaits, Ma'am" He smiled, his accent thickening for a moment.

After she had seated herself he climbed into the driver's side and put the jeep into gear. "I'll have a look over them when we get there and we'll be able to discern if you've gotten this one or not. There's been a particularly nasty strain that's been centralized in the Caribbean that has been rather resiliant towards some of the generalized vaccinations."

He took the jeep towards the dirt road that was leading up to the main facilities. He took it slow, aware of the fragile packages in the backseat, but even going about 20 on a dirt road can seem fast as every dip and pothole in the road jarrs your spine, and the vegetation was hardly out of arm's reach if she were to decide to stretch her hands out of the open-sided jeep.

It was obvious, as they traveled, that her initial assumptions about the clear-cutting was correct. However the job was apparently haphazard, only a scraping of the surface that hardly touched the root structure of the trees beneath the road - which only added to the bumps in the dirt road.

Now that they were actually beginning to penetrate the forest, Anjali took a deep breath. She frowned at the faint tinge of the jeep's exhaust, but that was quickly whisked away by the breeze that was heavy with the smell of growing vegetation and the sea.

Resisting the urge to fall asleep despite the jeep's motion being more jarring than rocking, she leaned quickly over - not enough to fall out, but enough to grab - and snatched a few leaves off of a roadside bush and examined them. Fraying a bit on the edges from being by the road, but healing... and the roots here would be worn to nothing if the traffic kept up. But that was unavoidable.

Concentrating on business, and on the landscape, kept her awake. But she was growing a bit excited as well. Although the work was daunting it would also be an interesting challenge, provided the bureaucracy here decided to help her and not hinder her planning and requests with red tape. And the forest would be wonderful to explore and collect and study... she hoped that, other than what had been destroyed for human habitation, it would be mostly untouched.

"Feral Labs," she read as they moved towards the buildings. "Ah, laboratories... what is it that you study here, again? I spent some time in the botanical sciences before deciding that I wanted to spend my time outdoors, not in a lab."

Sabin glanced over to her as she analyzed some of the vegetation that stretched out over the road, keeping quiet and leaving her to her thoughts until she spoke up.

He nodded. "Yes - we're at one of the primary development facilities for a medical company states-side. This is also the current residence of the owner of the company. He came into the company rather recently you see" he chatted. "And decided that if he was going to head a company like that, that he might as well make the best of his fortune, and set up this facility in a... ah... place where he could also spend time outdoors and not feel quite so lab-bound. Although once you're inside I'm sure you'll find that the facility here is absolutely state of the art."

He drove up to the gate, which swung open at their approach without having to decelerate the vehicle. "They do medical research... and have been working on genotyping nonhuman animals.... some plants as well, I believe. They hope to bring genetic knowledge of animals to the forefront, independantly match the level of work done on the human genome project."

"Interesting." She swallowed a yawn and rather hoped they would be there soon - movement would help snap her out of the stupor that seemed quite determined to catch hold of her. "Ah.... and plants? Good, than I hope my efforts as groundskeeper will not be without support, if they haven an appreciation for flora as well as fauna." Anjali smiled at Sabin as the gate opened.

Sabin nodded, smiling as he pulled into a space in the near-empty parking lot.

"I'm sure that some of your work could go hand in hand with their research. To be honest, I don't think they could name half of the native flora here on the Island, and it's quite possible that there are even several undiscovered ones here yet. This Island was virtually untouched until Moreau's ... great grandfather I believe, arrived here. And it was hardly developed at all until it came into his hands."

He walked around and opened her door for her. "Go ahead and leave your things in the jeep. I'll take you to the "village" as we call it and show you your duplex."

"Ah, excellent." Anjali rubbed her hands together, then stepped out of the jeep carefully. Fortunately, this time her legs didn't fail her, and she walked over to join Sabin, holding onto the strap of her messenger bag with one hand. "So what happens now, Doctor...?"
PostPosted: Tue Sep 06, 2005 10:38 pm

Sabin smiled, as they walked into the sliding glass doors and into the lobby area. So far, Anjali had yet to see another living soul.

The lobby of the facilities was much like any doctor's office, but one that was showing off, with plush furniture, wooden furniture, and magazines strewn about on small coffee tables.

Sabin didn't pause as he walked past it and to a door in the back, holding it open for her.

"Now, I'll take you up to the exam room and I'll take a look at your vaccination records" He smiled pleasantly, as if discussing whether or not she took sugar with her tea.

"Very well, anything to move things along," Anjali admitted. "I am sorry, but I've been in transit for the past day or so, and we all know it's impossible to sleep in economy class on a trans-Atlantic flight... so I fear if you aren't quick, the jet lag may claim me whether I want it to or not." She gave him a wry smile. "And ah, my records..." She opened her bag and handed him a carefully marked file.
