It's just a simple words acceptable for the most of the people to start conversations... god, it's same to say hello? yeah? hi? wazuuup?! Bueno? on Bonjour? It's the same! you can say these of more words to answer the phone!
Just the "hello?" is the most common, and everyone say it at the phone.

Because it's polite and well that's the first thing that you usually say. It comes naturally you don't really think about it. smile
