I was talking about that movie from the 80's called: "The Abyss". Hasn't anyone seen it?
Anywho, I've always liked the version of the underworld you can see in shows/movies like "Hercules". You guys know the ones I mean, right? I mean the ones with "Kevin Sorbo". In them, the underworld seems like a place you can get into while still alive and even visit the souls of people who died. There are different parts of the underworld like, a nice place for good souls, a nasty place for bad souls and, well, you get the picture. I also remember the Disney version of Hercules but, the underworld seemed very different there. I mean, as I recall, it only had a sort of whirlpool with the souls of the dead heading down like a drain. If anyone alive sat foot there they lost their vitality until they died. I guess everyone has their view about this place, huh?

Yes! That's a great film. It portrays aliens that live at the bottom of the ocean though as far as I know. I've not seen it for quite a long time now though.
I know what you mean about it being a kind of portrayal of an/the underworld though.

I'm glad you know what I meant with my last post. BTW, I wonder if some people in Hollywood have made films where the underworld is a completely different place. Does anyone know? Cuz I haven't seen enough movies to tell...

I can't really seem to see the underworld as anything else but the next plane down from the nether, a plane that either connects to the Hells, or the Hells being below the underworld in terms of planes.
I see the netherworld as being the next plane down from the material, and the ethereal being the next one up.

Guess what I found! The following article on wikipedia seems like it's not exactly the same old same Netherworld I've seen before. Look: Wikipedia In Akkadian and Sumerian mythology, Irkalla (also Ir-Kalla, Irkalia) is the hell-like underworld from which there is no return. It is also called Arali, Kigal, Gizal, and the lower world. Irkalla is ruled by the death god Nergal and his consort Ereshkigal. Irkalla was originally another name for Ereshkigal, who ruled the underworld until overthrown by Nergal. Both the deity and the location were called Irkalla, much like how Hades in Greek mythology is both the name of the underworld and the god who ruled it. The Sumerian netherworld was a place for the bodies of the dead to exist after death. One passed through the seven gates on their journey through the portal to the netherworld leaving articles of clothing and adornment at each gate, not necessarily by choice as there was a guardian at each gate to extract a toll for one's passage and to keep one from going the wrong way. The living spirits of the dead are only spoken of in connection with this netherworld when someone has been placed here before they are dead or wrongly killed and can be saved. The bodies of the dead decompose in this afterlife, as they would in the world above. As the subterranean destination for all who die, Irkalla is similar to Sheol of the Hebrew Bible or Hades of classic Greek mythology. It is different from more hopeful visions of the afterlife that later appeared in Platonic philosophy, Judaism, and Christianity. What do you think? I have heard somewhere that some cultures bury their dead with coins in their eyes so they'll have enough to pay the ferry man and not get stuck in limbo or whatever. mrgreen

I have one more plane below Hell which is almost disconnected from the world itself. It's been called "the void" before, and once in the void there is literally no return. It is where the souls of the truly evil are sent if killed by one specific weapon imbued with judgment magic.

Yes I've heard of the concept of burying the dead with coins as to pay the gate keeper or gondola driver as it was in greek mythology. I beleive it was something like a large lake between two sections of hades that was uncrossable without the help of the gondola driver, and he required 3 gold coins or something like that to help souls cross.
Also if I recall correctly, cybrus(the 3 headed demon-dog) was the gate keeper once you reached the other side.
On a side note I remember a scene from an R.A Salvatore book where somone was crossing a lake in the underdark. This lake reminded me very much of the lake in hades because the only way accross without geting eaten by some manner of creature was to pay the gondola driver to take them.

It's a concept that comes from the time of the Ancient Greeks. Two coins planted on the closed eyelids of the dead so that when they got to the cross over point, which I suppose can be called "limbo", they had enough to pay the ferryman who would take them across the water there to the afterlife.

Hey Mel! I wasn't talking about you posting it somewhere. I was referring more to the possibility of seeing it published by an editing house. I don't know which was the one that had J.K. Rowling's work published but it got the job done, didn't it? I'm looking forward to seeing yer work published.
