When I cosplay, I want to be...
Recognizable! I want people to know who I am!
Unique! I want to be the first of my kind!

The only thing that thought when I cosplay is "I LIKE THE CHARACTER"
So I choose its unique since most of my fave character is not famous
Too bad many people dont realized who i am. but what can I do? I'm using veil and cant use wigs. So when people said "Oh.. you become BLA BLA" thats the most precious time for me

Purushi
So here's the question:

When you cosplay, do you go for characters that people will recognize?
Or do you prefer going for a unique cosplay that only few will appreciate, but you enjoy nonetheless?

most of the charas that I've cosplayed so far aren't really popular, so I guess they can fall under the 'unique' category.

I'd usually choose characters that aren't cosplayed much (or not yet cosplayed at all), although it would also depend on my mood (for example, if I like the character, or I really like or want his/her outfit). rofl

Hmmm... hard to say. I put unique because I love asking people who they are and watching them get excited as they talk about this show I've never heard of. It's just a really cool reminder that there's a whole genre out there that I still haven't seen yet.

Personally, I don't think about that much... I'm one of the ones that says 'I love this character's role and want to be that person for a short period of time!' And that's it. But I honestly don't like having my picture taken, so that plays no role in it. *shrugs*

The only character I've decided is too unique is Naruto. The last con I attended was spent wading through an orange mass. ^.^;

I think it would be fun to have the best of both worlds... do a cosplay people will recognize, but don't see done very often.

In the grand scheme of things, though, I don't much care as long as I like who I'm cosplaying enough to dedicate the time, money and effort... but I still can't deny it feels good to be recognized, especially if you weren't expecting to be.

I say either way it's fun! If you want to be noticed as a popular charrie, go for the recognizable but if you want to be unique, go ahead and make your own. Either way, it still is unique since you hand made it. I'm pretty sure alot of you guys would't spend your blood, sweat, tears, and sleepless days on a costume that wasn't worth it! =3 I like both~<3

at the moment I prefer Charakters that are more...unique but I still hope that enough people will recognize it...better for my ego XD

but sometimes I just like to make charakters where I can have fun...

pictures important yes but only when I but sooo much work in it and the anime/manga is known....

I tend to pick characters that I don't think get enough cosplay love...or just love in general. It doesn't really matter if I get recognized, but that makes it more fun.

I picked Yukina because I love the character and only found maybe 10 other cosplayers of her on Cosplay.com and cosplaylab. I got an amazing reception, and that makes me even more proud of the first costume I did completely by myself. (without my mom's help)

The Ouran girl's uniform sprouted from my love of Ouran - I really didn't care if I was the only one or not, but I turned up to be one of two the first year, and at KumoriCon 07 I was the only yellow-clad one at the tea party. I was always put in the middle of the pictures...and one Tamaki kept invading my personal space. xD Very in character.

and for this year, I picked Mana (YuGiOh) and Misa Amane (Death Note) - Mana because she's an important side character in the final arc of the series and I want to push my limits in sewing, and Misa because I don't think she's loved for who she is as a person. In fact, most people I've met hate her, and I want to show that I love her, and nothing anyone says can change it.

...Haha, wall of text. Sorry about that. ^^

I choose costumes that appeal to me, regardless to their recognizable status.

For example, one costume I'm making is Ari from Okage. He's from a rather obscure game, but his outfit's so fun I can't resist making it. On the other hand, one of my dream costumes is Naruto. I find his orange outfit to be the cutest thing ever, and wearing such a fluffy blond wig is equally cute.

In short, I wear what's fun to me. If it's rare, great! If it's as common as air, it's equally great! Recognition's fun, of course, but I like to please me first.

Actually, the character's design has more of a part than anything. If it's not very cute or eyecatching, I probably don't want to cosplay the outfit~

Naturally when I pick a cosplay I do so out of love for the character. Although this question leaves me a little on the fence. I've been both very recognizable characters, Such as Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist and Trowa Barton from Gundam Wing. However, I have also been absolutely unrecognizable characters such as Kuronue from Yu Yu Hakusho: Poltergiest Report, he's Kurama's former partner and maybe in that movie for a total of 10 minutes collectively. I do like being recognized and asked to be stopped for photos, but it can get a little tiring, especially if you're on your way to a pannel at a con and in a hurry. Unrecognizable characters are nice that way, unless someone REALLY likes the look of the costume or they're curious about who you are, you hardly get stopped. So I mean, each has it's up and it's down, and I find I just can't pick one option... It would all depend on my mood, am I in a social, attention hog mood, or am I in a leave me alone mood?

I don't really mind one way or the other, as long as I'm in something that is outrageous. XD

I totally agree! lol

I generally prefer to cosplay things that I like, either for the costume or the character. Although at times it is nice to be recognized by more than 1-2 people at a convention.

The most obscure things I've done are Karla from Record of Lodoss Wars in 2004? and Natsumi from GetBackers Episode 37 where she was wearing a cross between Ban and Ginji's outfits (2007).

Probably the most well known cosplays I've done were Aeris (2001) and Sailor Mars (2002).

I like cosplaying characters that are not done very often, but are still recognizable. Needless to say, most of the costumes I really want to do are very difficult and no one wants to attempt them. But in the past I have settled for more popular, easier things, since I am still working on my sewing skills.

I mostly go for what I like, and what not many other people have done.
For example; I KNEW there were gonna be insane amounts of Naruto, Bleach, Death Note, and Haruhi cosplayers at my last convetion, so I went with something I knew no one would do: Vocal from Violinist of Hamelin. biggrin (I was suprised and satisfied when 2 people recognized me)
This summer, I plan on going as chaos from Xenosaga, slightly better known, but still not done quite as much.
