Figgsie Thats the funniest question i've ever heard! Jane Austen was an author I'd be shocked if someone chose movies..they are good, but the books...nothing compares! I just saw your siggy. Are you a Lolita? or just wear Lolita occasionaly? I want a Lolita dress so much

A book can give so much more detail. In a movie it's a 5 second glance. In a book it can be 3 paragraphs about the thoughts running through their heads, the memories that come crashing back and the fears that the other person knows everything going on in their head. You just can't give all of that in a movie!

I prefer the books. With the movies, I think it's difficult to understand everything that is going on unless you've read the book because they leave out, or add, so much. I do love the movies though. I think PBS's adaptations are very good.

I prefer the books because they have every detail. The movies have to cut out parts due to timing. The movies are good for visualizations, especially for those who have not been to England and therefore don't know what the scenery looks like. But the books are the best by far. 3nodding

Reading the books makes me sooo curious as to what England is really like. If I could take a trip anywhere in the world, it'd be to England. *sigh*

Well being English, born and bred I have to say that unfortunately we're rapidly following in America's footsteps (e.g. large metropolitan cities) but down south there are still some amazing places that have attempted to preserve the Regency era style buildings/sleeping vilage. Like Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Staffordshire, etc. You can even visit Will Shakespeare and Jane's houses.
Personally I think the films are a great way to introduce folk to the world of Austen.

I've only seen the newest version of Pride and Prejudice, and while I think it was well done, I do not think they did the best that they could. Mary was depicted as the emo sister, who did nothing but play the piano; in the novel however, she is an intellectual, who spends her time studying.
Despite that, I must say that I prefer books to movies, because when reading, I form a picture of what is happening in my head; I see the characters, and the places that they go, and when I see the movie, many times, it is nothing like what I pictured. Though they are sometimes fun to watch, I have to say that I stand by the books.

The books are of course much better than the movies^^
And I think you enjoy the films more if you have read the books before...

Well, reading the books lets you fill in the blanks in the movie. However, knowing what's missing can sometimes lessen enjoyment of the movie.
