I think even "responsible" breeding should be stopped. It only encourages the practice, and even most of the so called "responsible" breeders often cull (a nicer word for murder) undesirable animals.
If you're the type of person who just HAS to have that cutesy wootsy widdle puppy wuppy, then at least go through a breed rescue.
Personally, I think it's incredibly selfish to deny offering a home to any one of millions homeless needy animals based entirely on appearance. I mean, what if people did that to children? "yeah, I wanna help these pretty kids over here, look how adorable they are!! we'll let someone else deal with the ugly ones."

This sort of issue also shows up in the egg and dairy industries. Egg layers are bred to produce eggs for profit, regardless of the harm it does to the hens. Hens bred for laying eggs at a higher rate usually have very brittle bones because of all the calcium they put into producing eggs. And dairy cows are bred for extra large udders, which can drag on the ground and increase the odds for the cow to have an infection....

I believe that no animal in captivity should be bred, full stop. People should only adopt animals in need of homes, and within 10-20 years or so, there would be very few left. In my opinion, humans should not keep animals at all.
