Total? As many as the writer (creater of the story) wants.

Per person? As many as the person can handle, but it should be limited. I'd say to keep about 1-2 main character(s) so it's easy to keep up with (but it's only a sugestion). Also, on top of haveing main characters, it's fun to have a viority of minor characters to move things along or to fill spots in the story. wink
