"Certainly. We are always in need of new staff members, especially in the training department. The students could benefit from having a new face around." Gallaudet seemed pleased with his offer; the other teacher working in her department had been taken to the hospital in the city for a hereditary illness and probably would not return until the following year. Due to his absence, she had to assume all of his classes, along with her own.
As they passed into the teacher's lounge, Gallaudet noted that all of the teachers with morning classes were already there. With their day free due to the headmaster's announcement, they actually had time for breakfast. She smiled and waved back at those teachers who greeted her before advancing on the table of the current headmaster Elette. He looked up when she approached, and almost instantly got to his feet.
"Good morning Gallaudet." he said with a bright smile.
"Sleep well, sir?" Gallaudet replied with a smirk.
"For the most part. I was rather cold this morning just before sun up." Gallaudet shushed him before motioning towards Karu.
"Sir, I'd like to introduce you to...actually, I do not think I actually ever got your name." Gallaudet blushed; she had allowed a relative stranger into the Academy and basically given him a job without even getting his name.

Karu watched inquisitively as she made small talk with the other man. Perhaps the two were intimate. Such details mattered most when assessing a target. Karu snapped out from his train of thought, and quickly reached within the recesses of his mind for a codename. If he gave out his real name, his cover would be blown in no time. Always quirks when being the best at a job.
"My name is Silus Miyomoto, and I believe I am a new member to the staff here. My specialty being that of swords-play, and elite combat. I served under the Peristal army back in my day, and I believe I'll be a great addition to this academy."
Karu stood straight as he took in all that he could from the man standing before him. He found it funny how a simple note could send him on such a inquisitive adventure. A simple silly note written by a man now dead, or so he believed.
It was out of the ordinary really, but a pleasant change in how things were run. Usually a man or woman would approach him, and ask for a job to be done. No personal information was needed about the employer, or the target, and he sure as hell didn't care about the link between the two. He would asess the two on his own. He didn't even care to know the reason why...when it came to people, and their emotions, things would get complicated. So here he stood now, before two people, impersonating a teacher.

It had been some time since Jun's accident. His temporary coma was a result of the combination of a bad fall off of a horse and a training accident. It was a bad decision on his part not to go directly to the infirmary after the fall, and now he was paying for it.
However, until recently he had been able to comprehend what was going on around him. About a week ago, he became aware that someone was talking to him while he slept. At first, the voice was distorted and hard to understand. But after honing in on the sound he realized that it was his teacher Gallaudet that was speaking to him.
"...she's getting worried that you will never wake up, you know. It has been nearly a month and she has visited you every day. In all honesty this is partially my own fault; I shouldn't have dismissed my feeling that something was wrong." Jun didn't blame Gallaudet in the least, but appreciated her kindness.
Then, he first became aware of Ophelia's presence the day she brought the flowers. The crisp, fresh scent of lilies still lingered about the room as though they had just been cut from the ground. Now, as Ophelia sang to him softly, he finally felt on the edge of his conciousness. Slowly his eyelids opened; they felt very heavy as he was still groggy. The room was blurred at first, and just a little too bright. But as the room came into focus he could see Ophelia's familiar blue hair and a small smile graced his lips.

In such a calming atmosphere, Ophelia began to realize how exhausted she really was. It wasn't uncommon for her to exhert herself past the amount of energy she should have without much notice; the result was often a mood swing or a crash that could last for days. Her singing soon turned to humming as she hugged Jun a little tighter, taking his left hand.
Suddenly, she felt his hand tense and she looked up to see that his eyes were finally open. Her heart seemed to grow in her chest and she was temporarily speechless. When she finally could speak again, she did so softly, containing her excitement out of respect.
"Hey there sleepy head." Ophelia said, returning his smile. "I've missed you." She played with his hair again as a laugh suddenly escaped her. After all that time he had basically been away, all she could think to say to him was 'Hey there sleepy head...I've missed you...'. Suddenly, she sat up and leapt from the bed, grabbing the jacket she made for him before returning to his side. "I made this for you Jun. Stayed up all night finishing it. I hope you like it."

Jun chuckled, taking the jacket from Ophelia with both hands and holding it up so he could see. It was a short sleeved jacket that almost resembled a trench coat, and the way Ophelia had sewn the patches together made it look like the jacket was made from scales. The colors blended together quite masterfully, almost as though it had been made with one piece of fabric. "Thank you Ophelia. You did a great job. But you know you didn't have to make me anything; just being here with me is enough."
He set the jacket down and motioned for Ophelia to move closer. Jun wrapped his arm around her and laid his head against hers. They had been together for several years now and in his opinion their relationship had moved beyond 'sibling' a while ago, and there was something he was waiting to do until they graduated.
Gently he kissed Ophelia's forehead, taking in the scent of her abnormally blue hair. Suddenly, the door opened and the doctor entered along with the head nurse. "Mr. Webber, welcome back to the world."
"Thank you Dr. It's good to be back." Jun replied softly, his voice still not back to full strength.
"And I see that your friend is back. Good morning Ophelia." Ophelia nodded to the doctor. "I am afraid that I am going to have to ask you to leave my dear. We need to do some tests on Jun. Ophelia frowned, but resigned to getting up. Jun tightened his grip on her so that she wouldn't leave his side, looking at the Doctor.
"If you don't mind sir, I would like her to stay."
"But, Mr. Webber, I-"
"Are you going to deny your patient his first request since coming out of a comma?" Jun asked coyly. The Doctor sighed and nodded, though he insisted that Ophelia sit in the chair and not on his bed. Jun agreed, though he held onto Ophelia's hand the whole time.

Before Galladuet could say anything else, she was approached by another teacher who motioned for her to follow her into the hall. Gallaudet excused herself and followed out into the hall. "Yes Penelope, what can I do for you?"
"There is a man downstairs who asked for you personally. He's in a military uniform and-" Before the teacher could finish, Gallaudet had already turned and was heading for the entrance. The only time the military ever came knocking on their doorsteps was when they had bad news. Gallaudet made it to the entrance hall moments later and was greeted by the sight of a man she knew all too well. He was the current general of the Peristal Military, a tall and harsh man with dark, short trimmed hair and clean cut sideburns.
"General." Gallaudet called, walking over as he turned his atention to her. Suddenly she stood at attention; he eyed her for a moment before chuckling.
"My, my. This was not the welcome I had expected. At ease Gallaudet, you're not an active military personel. As of now, that is." He brushed passed her and headed for the meeteing room. Gallaudet rolled her eyes; they were hardly friends, and she had left on bad terms the last time they had worked together. That had been before her position at the Academy. She followed close behind until they reached the room. Elette was already waiting outside of the room, and nodded to the General as he opened the door and let him pass through.
"Watch him, I will go and get the other teachers." Gallaudet sighed as she entered the room, walking to the front and taking a seat.
"So what's the matter this time? Is the Emperor getting worked up over nothing again?"
"Do not speak about the Emperor that way Gallaudet. I will have no problem arresting you for treason." Gallaudet narrowed her eyes but did not reply. "Besides, I want everyone to be here before I debrief you. That way I wont have to tell the story twice." Not a moment later, Elette's voice suddenly came over the magical intercom again.
"All teachers to the meeting room ASAP. I repeat, all teachers to the meeting room."

Karu's very mind peaked with interest, as the brow of his face peaked with curiosity of what Gallaudet was pulled away for. Somehow he figured it couldn't have been good news being that her very posture seemed to change at the words of the young woman whom he assumed by her stature, as one of the school teachers. He turned his attention back in time to watch the man he was introduced to walk away with the look of distaste. He didn't blame him being that he had immediately turned his attention away from the man, and blatantly took a higher interest in what he assumed was his woman.
"Not even a day goes by, and we already may have a potential enemy. Hmph...I never had an aptitude for being social, perhaps I should work on it."
With that said Karu shrugged off his thoughts, and realized he had been left alone amidst the great halls of the academy. He was far more lost that the likes of a man within a labyrinth. He tried to recollect himself to at least find the courtyard, but even that was impossible to find. A breath of relief finally washed over him as he found a door with his quote, unquote name and title etched upon it. It read: 'Silus Miyomoto, swords-play, and battle tactics instructor.' To think that he had only arrived here, but a few minutes ago, and his name had already been etched within the door. He had figured the old man picked up a few tricks on his travels throughout the world, but to think the school still had some of his old magic dabbled amongst its walls sent his mind into amazement.
"Never a dull moment aye old man?"
Not even having barely broke the plane into his new quarters, the intercom blared loudly with what seemed to be a woman's voice, ordering all personnel to a meeting in the conference room. This bid bad news to Karu, and he quickly sighed as he lifted his hood above his head, and placed down his traveling pack within his quarters.
"Nurta I' fea," he spoke softly as his face shrouded within the shadows.
Twas a simple elven spell that he had picked up in his travels that shielded his appearance from those he wished not to reveal himself to. To those he trusted, he appear as he always did, but to those he did not trust, he would be given a different plain looking face, one to which it would not draw attention to. He believed in the human tongue it was called Incognito. He smiled lightly as he closed the door behind him, seeking his way to this meeting room. When he arrived already most of the staff had already show up, and he quickly took his place amongst them in the back of the mass of personnel. He was curious to find out what all the commotion was all about, and thats when he saw him. A face that brought the very heavens themselves to turmoil...General Ticus. Karu's hand quickly began to reach for his blade, revenge would become his this very day, but he quickly quenched the fire that raged on within him. Now was not the place nor time to enact his revenge. He would just sit, and wait for now.

Gallaudet's patience was wearing thin, watching as Ticus stood before them without making any motion as though to begin talking. An awkward silence was falling over the faculty, broken once or twice by a cough or someone repositioning themself in their seat. Elette had taken a seat next to her, and she could see out of the corner of her eye that he was watching her carefully. And a good thing too, because it was only a moment later that she snapped.
"By the heavens Ticus! Would you hurry up and tell us why you have darkened our halls with your presence?"
"Well, Gallaudet, I see that you still haven't taken care of that patience problem you have." Gallaudet drew her hand back as though to strike him, but Elette grabbed her wrist and forced her back into her seat. Ticus smirked. "Ah, I see that someone has the ability to tame the beast."
"Ticus, kindly tells us what it is that you have traveled so far to say." Elette said with a smile that hid his true discontent for the General; he was skilled in masking the truth. Ticus scoffed, but turned to face the entire room.
"By now, you have all heard that our relationships with the surrounding nations have fallen on hard times. The Emperor is concerned that there will be an attack on the city in the near future. It is because of this that I am here today. As this is the Military Academy, and your students have, as I have been told, have the best tuition here-"
"You are going to use these children to fight your battles?" Gallaudet suddenly exclaimed, getting to her feet again.
"Of course. Unless, you forget Gallaudet that the entire purpose of this school was to prepare children for a life on the battlefield. You all may have had some slack over the last few decades, since there hasn't been a need for active...participation. Regardless, this is an order, not a request." He stepped forward until he was face to face with Gallaudet, so that he could speak to her privately. "Do not forget that I am your superior officer." Ticus said with a smirk.
Gallaudet exhaled harshly, narrowing her eyes but keeping a civil tongue. After a moment, he nodded and looked past her at the rest of the teachers. "You have one month to select your 500 best candidates. On the first, you shall bring them to the Headquarters so that they can be assimilated into the military. Those student who you do not select will remain here, with those of you who I do not deem fit for battle, and will continue to train, so that by next year at the latest, they can join their fellow classmates. That is all for now; you are all dismissed, however, Elette, I would like to have a word with you in your office."
Elette got to his feet and motioned for Ticus to lead the way, and they left the meeting room. Teachers slowly began filing out, talking in low voices between themselves until only a few were left, including Gallaudet, who seemed rooted to the spot. She was clenching and unclenching her fists, breathing deeply as she muttered incomprehensibly, trying to calm herself down.

Bile...he could remember tasting bile in the back of his throat as Ticus spoke his malicious plans. Such a time to become a teacher he thought as he sat there staring at the man whom caused so much strife in his life, but still he found it lucky to have such an opportunity to be closer to his revenge than ever before. Just then he decided that whomever he was to kill was no longer important to him. All that mattered now was fulfilling the death of his long hated enemy...Ticus.
As Ticus, and Elette exited the room, Karu and a few were left there in disbelief. There he saw Gallaudet filled with anger like a kettle about to steam. In a passing movement, he paused momentarily, and spoke to the highly disturbed woman.
"Use it...all that anger, and pent up frustration should not go unfocused. I have dealt with Ticus many times before, and for you to let yourself become so riled up in front of him gives him that much of a little more on you. He knows how to push your buttons. So just save up your aggression, and distaste, and use it at a time best suited."
Karu stopped as he looked to Gallaudet now giving his full attention. She was still beautiful even though she was fuming with anger. It reminded him of the saying... 'Even a rose has it's thorns.' He smiled a bit at the thought to better cushion the moment. Another man's woman...hmph...it never occurred to him that he had already become infatuated with the woman. Perhaps it was because she was like no other mark he had ever looked to hunt down...or maybe it was because she was unlike any other woman he had ever met. Either way, she amazed him, and sent his mind into a stifling blank when they spoke. Such a woman was dangerous, and tended to keep him on his toes. "Besides...frowning doesn't suit you...perhaps a drink will better cool your temper. Mind joining me?"

After a long intake of breath, Gallaudet's entire body seemed to relax, as she turned to Karu. Returning his smile, she chuckled and rolled her eyes. "I was off my guard today. What a fool I am. It's been a while since I've seen him, and I forgot how perfectly charming he is."
"As for frowning, don't worry I don't make a habit of it. Regardless, a drink sounds like an excellent idea, Silus. Why don't we head up to my office."
Turning on her heels she headed out the door, slowly though so that she could keep in pace with Karu. For it being such an eventful day already, Gallaudet hadn't minded Karu's appearance. Maybe it was because of his connection to her great-grandfather but she felt an odd calmness at present. It was a different change of pace that she welcomed greatly.
Leading Karu up a flight of stairs and down a hallway Gallaudet opened the door to her office, ushering him inside before herself. It was a decently sized room with a desk at the far end with two seats in front of it, crimson velvet curtains, and two hanging chandeliers sitting at either end of the room. The wall closest to the door had built in book shelves and a small section in the middle which housed bottles and drinking glasses.
"Please, have a seat." she offered, motioning towards on of the chairs by the desk. Gallaudet took a bottle off the shelf and uncorked it, pouring a generous amount into two glasses. Walking over and handing one to Karu, she leaned up against her desk and took a long sip before speaking. "Starting tomorrow we'll have to go over the student lists and pick out candidates. I'm concerned about telling them right away, though it would be wrong to keep them in the dark about it don't you think?"

Karu took a long drawn out breath before taking a large gulp of the seemingly smooth, what he assumed to be bourbon, and smirked. Familiar tastes, and smells always brought him back to when he was a young man. Then he had only been a small nuisance to Ticus' men, but now...well thats another story. He dazed off as a memory seemed to recreate itself, as if slowly re-etching itself into his mind. He hadn't noticed that he had been staring off into the bottom of the glass for some time now.
"Angie, Gutz, Satske, Panta, Judge...Heshiro," he whispered to himself.
The very names seemed to warm his heart, and send a glimmer into his eye. He quickly snapped from his asphyxiation and returned his attention to Gallaudet. Something about her reminded him of them. A shiver went down his spine as he drowned out the thoughts with another gulp nearly finishing it off. He was foolish to compare her to them...after all...they were dead. Feeling a bit more safe within the office, he slid off his hood revealing his long silver hair. He was glad that the personnel of the academy didn't get out much. Most could recognize him by first glance, after all, he face was posted on many wanted posters about the town.
"Since I am new, perhaps you could push for a time expansion before I choose which students I select. I have, but started today, and I wouldn't want to send a young boy to his death, and I'm pretty sure Ticus wouldn't want some fool blundering up his elite death squad."
That said he finished off his drink feeling it burn all the way down. It wasn't some horrid burn you would piece to a fiery discomfort, but a warm soothing feeling that made the very tips of your ears grow warm, along with the pit of your stomach. He placed the cup on the desk, and smiled after looking up at her once more with his golden curious orbs.
"Good year...may I have another?" he asked somewhat sheepishly not wanting to sound like a lush.
In all actualities he was a lush. Life seemed to leave him no thrill as it had in the olden days, and now all he could do to drown out the dull pain of nothing was to drink. Now he wasn't one to just drink uncontrollably. When I say drunk, I meant exactly that, but he handled himself as he would when he was sober. He carried himself unusually well when drunk, give or take a few formalities, and a loosened tongue.
"Forgive me, but Ticus, and I haven't exactly seen eye to eye. You could even say he..." he quickly hushed himself.
"I've already said too much about myself...tell me more about yourself other than your the great granddaughter of my old friend," he said quickly catching himself, and slyly changing the conversation. This would be harder than he thought.

Gallaudet poured more into his glass before continuing. "Certainly. Although it should be rather easy to spot those students who have true potential. I only know five myself who I would dare throw out onto a battlefield, and for that matter one of them is in the hospital at the moment. I will try and convince him, but I believe he has already made up his mind."
She swirled the contents of her glass around and around, not particularly interested in drinking. Lately, her secret stash hadn't been satisfying, though Gallaudet suspected it was due to recent events around the Academy.
"So you want to hear about me, eh?" she said, finally taking another sip. "Well, when I was younger my life was rather boring, or at least from my prospective. The elders of my town would inspect each babe once it was born, and if they had any magical abilities, they were branded much like myself."
Gallaudet pulled down her collar and showed Karu the mark on the back of her neck. "They tried to teach me as much as they could, but it was hardly helpful. Anyway, after twelve years of that lifestyle, I headed out and found a teacher worthy of learning from. Along my travels, I did gain a great teacher, and met Elette, before he was headmaster."
Getting to her feet, Gallaudet set her glass down and headed towards the window. "I have some...colorful stories of my few years before the Academy, most involving Ticus and the Peristal Military, but I think I will save them for another day." she said turning back to him with a smile.
Sometimes she couldn't stop talking, though as she hardly knew Karu she realized that giving him too much information on herself was not wise at the moment. Turning to look out at the courtyard below, she watched a few children having a snowball fight. Then, on accident, she muttered, "I had a child once..."

Karu's brow arched as he took a rather large gulp of the rather smooth bourbon. He last words seemed to catch in his mind, and it seemed to him that this was his insight into the mystery known as Gallaudet. He stood up, and decided to play it calm, to somewhat play about the edges of the conversation. If he showed interest to hastily...he would never get to know all he desired. First he would give her an inch into his past, and let her curiousity peak to a point where she could no longer bare it, and then he would dabble into her past with sly small questions.
"I believe I traveled through a few villages that somewhat dabbled in the traditions of the ancient ones. It was just starting up when I came through then. Its been a very long time since I've heard about those times, and to think that some villages still practice the art...remarkable."
This he let intentionally seep out. She would be breaming with questions if she did her math right. The ancient traditions were of his time, and humans started dabbling within it after the elven treaty. That would nearly make him 120 years old now. Strong elven magics kept Karu and Ticus from aging, the type of magic imbued by the gods in the form of a blade. Some would think of such as a gift, but oh how he longed for death. Revenge was all that kept him alive. Ticus, and the emperor would pay dearly, but Ticus would pay most with his life, and the sweet sounds of torment that would bellow from his mouth as he slowly tortured him. A slight grin showed as he thought of the delight he would take, and then he asked her.
"Was the child from the headmaster?" he asked softly letting the silence sink in after the question, but not once breaking his gaze from the silhouette of he new found curiosity.
She intrigued him. A spark long thought to have disappeared with the heroes of the past seemed to light up within her eyes. She was different from most, and perhaps she would change things in such a corrupt place.

Gallaudet looked over her shoulder at him, narrowing her eyes slightly. This was the second time he had alluded that he was older than he looked, the first of course mentioning her great-grandfather as an "old friend". Perhaps it was because she didn't want her brain to be confused by her eyes, or vice-versa, but she had been trying to ignore the fact that there was much more to Karu than she had originally assumed. It allowed her to have a better relationship with people.
Suddenly she smiled, shaking her head. "Well, well Silus, it seems I have underestimated you. It seems that my great-grandfather certainly had an interesting friend, to say the least. Your appearance plays quite a trick on the eyes, and you definately have sparked my interest. How old are you really, if of course you don't mind my asking?"
Then, she realized that she shouldn't be so forward or eager to learn more about this perfect stranger. Gallaudet did not want to scare him away, if indeed she could. In a time where it was hard to trust anyone, she found that she was searching more and more for people to keep close that she could believe in; secretly she hoped that Karu might be one of those people.
After a moment of staring at Karu's face, she turned her gaze back to the window. "And no, Elette is not the father. It happened before I met Elette. However, I do not know much about the child. That's a horrible thing for a mother to say..." she muttered with a nervous chuckle. "I was very sick after I had the baby, and while I was unable to do anything my child was stolen from me. By the time I got better I didn't know what had happened or where he had been taken..."

Karu's lips curled. Something about this woman awakened a long forgotten part of him, he had thought was dead, something primal, something risky. He sighed as his eyes narrowed slightly, but that smile remained plastered on his face. He didn't want to hide whom he was to this woman anymore, but telling her would mean certain complications. Soon his smile faded, and his look became stern as he peered at her back, knowing she could feel the certain chill that it brought about.
"Do you know exactly who I am Gallaudet, because I know who you are...no...wait...the question should really be phrased like, can I trust you, and can you handle knowing who, and what I really am?"
He quickly gulped down the three quarters of bourbon he had left, and placed it upon her desk before standing up, and turning towards the door. She was bound to find out anyway. It was only a matter of time. It was hard to disappear from the world when you were responsible for a sword style, that was said to be trained in almost half this continent. Not to mention it was mighty hard to be forgotten for being the most wanted man on Ticus' list. He chuckled, and slightly turned his head towards her.
"You know...no matter what you do with me after I tell you who I am...I admire you. Your child would be proud had he known more of his mother...My name is known throughout these lands, but is rarely spoken. I have slaughtered 100 men in one night...more amazingly I survived. I am the brother of a Omen, and a fallen hero, the friend of many outcast, and the sworn enemy of the emperor...more so Ticus..."
He paused pondering if he should reveal his name, and turned his head forward. A small smile etched upon his lips as his hair dangled in front of his eyes.
"And I am the man whom was sent here to kill you..." he said softly as he turned towards her to catch her expression.
"Do not be worried though...your life is in no danger of being taken by myself...I've taken interest in you Gallaudet, and you've awoken something I thought was long dead within me. You asked me how old I was...well...I am as old as the man you work for now...I am well over 100 years of age. If you cannot figure out who I am now...well I think you know who I am. I'll be in my quarters awaiting your judgement...weather I am to call you enemy...or friend."
