Jeckal's two sense: In the crazy buffyverse world there are multiple dimensions. Maybe each is a different dimension. Like both are real but in thier own dimension. One is a 'What if" dimension. I don't know if y'all understand what I mean or not...

It's deffintly one of those episodes which will leave you pondering the idea forever.
I think it was a clever twist in the plot, because it had the potential to leave you thinking nothing was real. It was a good expereiment but would have been a terrible ending.
It would have left us all rather upset to know the characters we were so attached to were nothing more than imagination.

I read a really good ficlet on this episode. It was about what the explination of the Angelverse would be if Buffy really was a girl in an institution. The explination: Fred was also crazy in the same institution, and she and Buffy where around eachother alot. xd Can't remember the title, but I know it's on fanfiction.net.

"Yeah ok, this is reality, I accept that, if this was my fantasy I'd have made myself taller" * -snipet from Why do we write this? pt9 by Goolecap Hehe, but on the other end of the spectrum it stands to reason that the very last bit of the episode where we see catatonic Buffy and her mother crying is after she had been released from the illusion, so therefore is wasn't something Buffy was imagining. I think that bit was added just to keep you wondering.

My head hurt so much from that episode, well written but, i think the world she made up was the asylum.. cause she wanted to escape because of that demon, a world without spike,? that's truely hell....!! crying crying crying

i don't think it would be all in her head, all 6 years. because if it was of course she would have made up struggles and fights, but her parents were still divorced in her head, and that was somthing she really didnt' want when she was in the asylum. also why would she make up the whole story in her head and make a bunch of people die, and send angel away, and create parker, and just make everything so hard on herself, i mean if i had a world in my head i would at least makemyself happy.!

That episode got me thinking, strangely though i got a conclusion pretty quickly that it wasn't her imagination cuz how would Buffy, a young girl living in an asylum not being able to experience anything around her or building up her knowledge for years, be able to think up a whole universe that's exactly like the one we live in but with demons, magic, etc, where she's gone to university and pays taxes and does other things a person her age and personality at that age(when she entered the supposed asylum) would probably have no clue about. The only way she would be able to do that was if she was like 70 years old before entering the asylum and that when she really leaves the Buffyverse it's like 50 years past 2000.
I hope this makes sense and could be possible. I have a feeling the writers probably never thought about this.

i seriosuly didnt like that episode bcuz of the way buffy was acting but im jsut gonna keep it simple in my head:
it was an alternate reality for buffy but not the real one for pretty much the reason that all of it could not be made up and it was jsut to show people that hate vampires and demons and dont believe in them, that there is another world where they dont exist (in buffy's head).

personally, I think it was just the demon making her think she was crazy. but, I was a little curious after seeing it for the first time how they were going to do the next episode. I also thought it was funny that Dawn wasn't in the alternate reality. ha ha, I didn't like her

I have to admit, it left me with many questions.
I had this feeling after seeing that episode the they would eventually end the series with it all being in her head. It would have been a cool way to end it, but I don't think I would have been satisfied.

Squirrelfang It is possible that both universes are real!!! Afterall, there is the theory of infinite universes, which can be interpreted as meaning everything that possibly could happen does happen. That means that the entire Buffyverse could actually be real on a theoretical standpoint, which is a very nice idea. Perhaps, Buffy had been straddling two different dimensions, or was merely an observer in the second dimension (a kind of out of body type phenominon), or any one of other explanations I've left out. Anyway, this is all theoretical, but the fact that Anya created an entirely different dimension in which Buffy never came to Sunnydale lends credence to this possibility in terms of the Buffyverse... That's what I eventually concluded. That the Buffy that we know somehow stepped into the Buffy from another reality's shoes for a bit.. I really had to wonder, though.. they made that episode VERY well.. I just could not shake the feeling for the longest time that she was really in an insane asylum, and all that we saw was her delusions. As they stated in the episode, "Think about it. What seems more plausible, a world of demons and vampires, where you are the chosen one who has the power to save the world, or that you are actually in an asylum?" Granted that isn't an exact quote.. but that really got me thinking.. xd

slightly off topic but the 'possible' alternate reality with lots of shrimp you keep referring to is real. its mentioned in one of the season 5 angel episodes after illyria shows up she mentions a world with nothing but shrimp "i tired of that one quickly"

I loved this episode, a number of my friends hate it. It's probably my third favorite after Hush and Once More with Feeling.
I can see a couple of possibilities:
Buffy chose the delusion. She is in fact strapped to the bed, drooling on herself, because she chose the fantasy. Think about it. Her options were choose the "real" world, where she's a scared little girl in an insane asylum, with no friends, pumped full of meds and strapped to her bed at night. In the "fantasy" she's a hero, The Slayer, The Chosen One. Sure, it means that some whack stuff happens...correction, lots of whack stuff happens, she loses friends and loved ones, and life is really hard. But she can literally change the world. Her friends are loyal and powerful, and together they can stand toe-to-toe with gods (or a goddess, at least).
Now if you had to choose...the hospital gown and the pills or the leather jackets and the steaks, which would you choose?
Option two - Buffy has often longed to be a "normal" girl. She bucked the restrictions of the Watcher's Guild and tried to do regular high school things like have a boyfriend and go to the prom (granted, those never quite work out right, but she tries.) So this demon comes along and pokes her with this venom and suddenly she gets to find out what its like to be a normal girl. Except not quite.
Remember how somethings don;t quite works out right for Buffy? So she gets to see what it's like to be normal...but not a happy fantasy skipping hand in hand with her parents. No, Buffy gets to try being normal, by having her very not-normal self dropped into the mundane world. In in this world, teenage girls who think they are super heros get sent to hospitals and given medication. Normal people don't just shake off the hurt and walk out of the hospital.
Suddenly being normal doesn't seem like such a wonderful thing, and Buffy ends up with a new appreciation of who and what she is and what she can do.
I have other theories, but I talk too much.
