Clayton's ears twitched gently as the leaves under his paws crunched noisily. It was Autumn and Jeremy had decided that they would set up territory in the Forest. It was a nice place really but might be difficult establishing themselves in it. Until things were better and more stable this place would do in the young Wolf's eyes. A rustle to the left caught his attention and Clay shifted to glance over at the black wolf that emerged.
Jeremy snorted to him and came up on the side a little, just slightly behind for protection. No matter what, any status has the Alpha in mind. It wasn't like Jeremy himself cared but Clay would have made a big fuss should he run off too far or anything. "The area is clear and any Wolf I can smell passed by long ago. Probably random Mutts looking for a meal." In a Pack the Loners were referred to as though they were something less, and if they caused problems would be dealt with.
"Well that is good." Clay drawled lazily, eyes still scanning the Forest tentatively. "We don't need problems, not right now."
Jeremy smiled a little and nodded, then spoke. "We need to find shelter and food. A hunt may be best, neither of us wants to be alone for the time being. I smelt a warren not too far off, lets eat first. It'll be better to not have blood calling out to everyone where our position is."
They ran towards the Warren and when they got close enough, slowed to a trot. Within a few feet it was time to hunt. Clay hunkered down and stayed low until Jeremy had checked out the situation. Ten of them, one with a bad leg. And a baby playing off to the side. Perfect targets and pretty lucky too. One of them could have gone without a meal today.
Jeremy turned and twitched his head to the left, that was where Clay would go. The baby was almost full grown and would satisfy him until later, besides he could hunt for more later. Right now this was the best, no one else was going to catch their food.
Pushing on to the left and keeping low, Clay tried not to make much sound at all, his paws only pushing on the pads and the claws kept up and away from earth and leaves. He listening to all the sounds coming over the wind, and did his best to stay downwind away from being smelt. Just when he was close enough, he could see the small Rabbit chew on grass, Clay waited for the signal. If he charged out on his own then all the Rabbits would run and Jeremy would lose his dinner.
A black nose pocked out from a bush, twitching to smell the air and meal that awaited. He was in position now. Pushing his head out further his gave the signal, and Clay tore from his post diving for the Rabbit. The baby bolted off to the right, eyes wide with fear. Stinking of it. Clayton gave chase, following behind and turning the best he could. Finally he caught up and sank his teeth in just before it flew into it's warren and safe place.
He felt the squealing animal twist sharply in his jaw, and clamped down harder. Turning he found Jeremy with one paw on his, eating. The Rabbit died quietly and Clay gently put it down, before tucking in. Once his belly was fully satisfied they both left to look for a nice place to spend the night.
It had been the first meal in two days, it wouldn't be long before his stomach started to complain once more but he was grateful for the temporary feeling and warmth it gave. It took them both an hour to find and settling into an abandoned alcove. It was pretty much just formed in rocks, nothing deep or anything but enough for now.
"How long do you think we'll stay here?" Clay growled, shifting closer to the entrance. Just in case.
Jeremy sighed and considered this. They had been thrown from the pre-existing Pack. He'd fought with his father who wanted to be the Alpha, and won. But the others refused, he would have been forced to become a Lone wolf if it weren't for Clayton, his adoptive Son. He believed Jeremy could make a great leader and so this is what brought them here. It shouldn't be that they had to move on every day, but such is the life.
"If we can find others to join us, we may be able to live here. If not, we'll move on again."
With nothing more to say, they both slept, Clay keeping one eye open. You never know what will happen next.
