Blood Berry's ears shot straight up. "You really mean it? I can stay with you?" he asked, bouncing to his feet. "Yipee!"

He started making happy little chirping sounds and turning excited circles around Mei yu. He was actually wanted by someone. He wouldn't be alone in the ugly tree anymore. He wouldn't have to watch what's going on in the world from a distance anymore. In his merriment, however, he got a little too close to the river's edge, slipped on the soft mud and tumbling over face first into the water.

While visiting the migrating salmon, Blood Berry managed to catch once of the smaller ones in his jaws before Mie-Yu pulled him out. Dropping the fish on the ground, he shook himself and then grinned proudly at the older Sitara.

"I meant to do that," he said wiggle his nose at Mie-Yu, putting a paw on the flipping fish. "When there's a will there's a way. Now we have lunch!"

"Whoa!" Blood Berry exclaimed, clinging to Mei-Yu as she darted around the trees. "Where are we going, Mei-Yu?"

Blood Berry slid off Mei-yu's back. He looked over the ledge at the landscape below. Heights didn't bother him. After all, he had spent half his life up in the limbs of that very tall and ugly dead tree. The breeze was light and the sun peeking though the clouds left funny patterns on rocky hillside. He could see just about everything from up here. From the blue-green water of the ocean, to the glistening beaches and even the forest were most of the other Sitara lived. It was a good place. A safe place. Nodding, he turned and padded to where Mie-yu stood by the entrance of her lair.

"I like this place," he stated to the older Sitara, smiling. "Let's see the rest of it."

Blood Berry curiously entered the cave that was Mei-yu's den. Yes, he liked this place. It would be warm in the winter and cool in the summer. It was up high, so that they could see trouble way before it reached them. And Mei-yu have made it inhabitable. Hay bedding, torches for light, places to collect and store food and water. He sniffed the air. Water, damp earth, leaves, hay, berries and Mei-yu scents swirled in his nose. Yes, this was a very good shelter. Only one thing missing. His Ruby eyes full of merriment and mischief, Blood Berry padded further into the den and leaped onto the sleeping pad, in which he preceded to roll all over. Now the place would smell like him and Mie-yu.

Blood Berry playfully nipped at Mei-yu before settling down and curling up next to her. He looked out the cavern opening at the fading light of evening as it cast soft shadows over the island. The sky was darkening, and a red glow crested the horizon, like the dying embers of an eternal fire. Its light silhouetted the trees and water in the distance, and lite the clouds in brilliant luminescence.

The stars were almost visible, and and light breeze drifted in, causing the torch to flicker and Blood Berry's fur to stir. From this vantage point the young kit watched the sunset with a great awe. He did not understand it, nor ever did it cross his mind; what he did know was that it was beautiful.

"You're lucky to have found this place, Mei-yu," He murmured quietly. "How did you find it?"

Blood Berry saw the fleeting sadness in her eyes as she spoke. He wondered what had happened that was so bad that she deliberately isolated herself from civilization for so long. She was so very kind and generous and had a heart as big as the world. It was hard to believe that anyone wouldn't love her the moment they met her. Laying his head against her shoulder, he made a silent vow that he would always try to make her happy her and to never make her regret taking him in.

"I like you, Mei-yu," he murmured sleepily. "I'm glad you found me."

Something that Blood Berry had learned early on was that he was that he was a night owl. He had never slept completely through the night, preferring to nap during the day in between his treks for his necessities and such. So it was still quite dark when he awoke, somewhat disoriented by his surroundings at first. Though it was very nice to finally have a den and a companion it was going to take a bit getting used to.

He quietly got up so that he didn't disturb Mie-yu and had a satisfying stretch, flexing his sleep stiff muscles. He drank a little water and padded over to the caves opening. Sitting down he looked out into the darkness. There was a crescent moon suspended in the midnight blue sky and starlight danced on the ocean off in the distance. Turning his head his gaze fell to the forest and the huge tree that lay at it's heart. He had always been curious as to what exactly its significance was. He knew it was important to the other Sitara, but why? To him it just a very big tree, much like the dead one he had lived in, only much nicer to look at because it was alive. It was now edged in a glow, each leaf seeming to glitter in the slight breeze.

Cocking his head curiously, he went on with his silent musings as he surveyed the night landscape. He would have many questions for Mei-yu when she woke up.
