Honestly you can use the lancer anytime you want.
What are you going to do Shoot them with a shotgun
when there across the map.
It the main weapon for COG

Host pisses poeple off, and i do know people who only do well if they have host and lancer, so you are an exception but there are plenty who cannot do anything without host. BTW i just dont like the lancer because of the new chainsaw. Doesnt even need to rev to chainsaw someone, wtf?
