Actually, I think William S. Baring-Gould decided Holmes' full name was William Sherlock Scott Holmes. How he came up with that I can't remember--been a long time since I read The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes--that's NOT the Billy Wilder movie or it's novelization, it's W.S. Baring-Gould's biography of Holmes.
That's nothing, anyway. Getting a spit-wash at age 42, in a parking lot in front of a busy restaurant...THAT'S irritating. gonk

Okay... when my mum's driving, and she has to step on the brake, she is in the awful habit of whacking me across the bosom with her free hand. I assume the original intention was to keep me from flying through the windscreen, but the seatbelt sort of does that job... And I think she permanently stunted my mammary development through years of boob-smacking...

You make it sound like that commercial for the "Taboo" show on National Geographic Channel. I think it would've actually hurt you if she was hitting you hard enough to do that. smile
You should do it back at her sometime when you're driving and she's the passenger--see how she likes it! Turnabout is fair play.

I was in an antiques store and found a copy of the Later Adventures c. 1940 for five dollars. It made me squee, which got weird looks from the other customers.

Oh, yeah--that's always fun. biggrin
Back in Indiana 20 years or so ago I found what I think was a first edition of the Illustrious Clients Casebook in a cool old used bookstore near Ball State campus. I kept a poker face, bought it, & then scampered out in glee. xd At the same store I also found the soundtrack record LP of the musical "Baker Street". There must have been one or two old Holmesians around the area.

I managed to find a copy of The Origional Illustrated Sherlock Holmes for two bucks. It wasn't even used (pity, used ones have more character to them). I think it may be the same book as your find, Mary Russel.
I don't get around to used book stores that often. Not as much time as I used to have. I'd probably go into debt, too.

Eirwyn I think Walter Paget himself did a few Holmes illustrations, didn't he? Not as good as those of his brother, though. I thought that it was their first intention to hire Walter as the illustrator, but they ended up accidently getting Sidney.
