I usually keep mine at a comfortable position, but yea I was told you should be able to draw a line from hip to heel , though it can still be adjusted. I have a very bad knee though so if mine are to short it causes some pain and discomfort, so yea .. about where you feel comfortable is good.

In western, your legs are supposed to be slightly in front, and the stirrup length is correct in the picture. In western, your weight is in your butt. You don't support yourself like you would in English. And you kind of just sit there.
